Nordlys | 35 comments I am still quite new here at goodreads, but already I am highly impressed by the number of books people here have time to read in (for me) short periods of time, and it made me curious of people's reading habits.

I myself am a very slow reader, always have been. So for me it can take weeks or months to get through a book that other people only spend days on, even though I read everyday. I read whenever I have a moment, and I always carry a book with me. I'll read before I go to bed, while waiting for a bus/train, while sitting on the train or bus (although I often regret it after as I tend to get a bit sick), sometimes while I am walking (and I haven't tripped over anything or walked into a wall yet!) and sometimes I will sneak away from happenings and "just read a little bit". And I often read while I eat (if I am eating alone). But I tend to not read too much when I am at home, because then I usually have too many other things to do (either "necessary things" or fun things such as other hobbies).

So yes, what are your reading habits, and on average how fast can you get through a book? Of course this differs from book to book, but are you fast, or slow like me?

message 2: by Kate (new)

Kate (kaitlins16) Lately, I've been really slow moving through my books. School has made me real busy since spring break, and I've only finished a few books since then.

When I'm not busy, though, I go through books pretty quickly. If a book sucks me in to the point where I just don't want to put it down, I can finish it the same day I finish it. If not, then I usually finish it in the next day or two. I don't like to spend too much time on one book because that's when I lose interest, and I end up moving on to something more interesting.

I read eight books for a challenge during my spring break. For five or six days, I finished a book a day. I'm pretty sure that's my personal record.

message 3: by Sapir (new)

Sapir | 12 comments I'm a very slow reader. I'm always trying to push myself to read faster, but it just doesn't work!! It usually takes me a whole week to finish a normal-length book (300-400 pages).

message 4: by Nordlys (new)

Nordlys | 35 comments That's still faster than me Sapir;) If I try to push myself to read faster I start skipping words and end up losing what happened. But I also have a tendency to read parts that I really like several times before I move on, which takes up a bit of time as well...

I tend to read pretty quickly, but I e always been like that. When I actually sit down and concentrate, I can read a book in one to one and a half days. Sometimes I reach "burnout," though. Where I've read so much, I just wanna sit back and play video games or go outside and take a walk. When I hit that, it usually takes me a week or so to get out of the funk. Lol.

message 6: by [deleted user] (new)

It depends on how much I love the book. If its interesting, I can finish a 300-400 page book in 2-3 days. I think my record was a 500 page book in 2 days.

Usually I read whenever I get the chance. When I'm at home, when I'm on a walk, in the car, etc. It's hard to keep me away from books. :P

ali ᵏᵉᵉᵖ ʸᵒᵘʳ ᵐᵒᵘᵗʰ ˢʰᵘᵗ (time_wont_fly) I tend to read pretty fast, if I like the book. But now, I have gotten into a nasty habit of reading more than one book at once. It's horrible, because I haven't been able to finish that many books. I have to try to only read one book at a time, but it never seems to work. I read during English class, and before bed. I also tend to read alot on Saturday mornings before I get up.

message 8: by Sara (new)

Sara (abookbuff) | 26 comments I have this habbit, where I cannot put a book down unless I finish the chapter I'm reading. I CAN'T stop mid-chapter or mid-sentence. I end up all confused, LOL!

ali ᵏᵉᵉᵖ ʸᵒᵘʳ ᵐᵒᵘᵗʰ ˢʰᵘᵗ (time_wont_fly) Haha! I can stop at the end of a paragraph, or at the end of a page, but not mid-sentance. I also have to put in a bookmark, otherwise I will go a read, like, 10 more pages than I needed to.

message 10: by Sara (new)

Sara (abookbuff) | 26 comments I know, right! My sister got me bookmarks for my birthday, they're so practical :P

coconutsnbutts (♫ נєѕѕι¢α ♪) I honestly think the speed you read at is strongly affected by how often you read and what you read. I used to read REALLY SLOW but that was because I didn't find what I liked yet. now, I read what I like and I breeze through books. Also, I read multiple books every month. :) so it helps.

♥♡¢σσкιє♥♡ (Krystle) (kookiekrysp88) | 71 comments I'm all over the place. Sometimes it takes me forever to get through a book I really love because I'm savoring every word, but other times I blast right through it because I can't wait to see how it ends.

message 13: by Carmen (new)

Carmen I read really quick Ive never spent more than 5 days with a book

ali ᵏᵉᵉᵖ ʸᵒᵘʳ ᵐᵒᵘᵗʰ ˢʰᵘᵗ (time_wont_fly) I used to not be a reader, like, at all. I read my first book that was over 100 pages in fifth grade. I started to read bigger books after that, and was hooked. The first big book I read took me like a month to get through. The second one, 2 months. The third one, 3 days. :D

message 15: by Stephani (new)

Stephani (lolitasue) | 257 comments Most of the time i read pretty fast 1-2 days tops. but sometimes if it's a really good series but one of the books in the series i didn't like very much it takes me for ever to read, like i would be reading then i get sidetracked and start watching TV and forget about the book until the next day and i end up doing the same thing with the TV..my other habits if mostly laying in my bed under the blankets with all the lights off and only a night stand light on. and i like to take notes if i read a part in the books that i really love i will write it done. i have a whole notebook with quotes from books that i love.

ali ᵏᵉᵉᵖ ʸᵒᵘʳ ᵐᵒᵘᵗʰ ˢʰᵘᵗ (time_wont_fly) That's pretty cool. I need to start taking quotes from books. I would kind of like to highlight in my books, but that might be weird if I ever gave my books away, or let someone borrow it... Haha!

message 17: by Rachel (new)

Rachel (nimyue) | 4 comments I read a book every 1-2 days, but reading is my hobby. When I get into knitting or crocheting it can slow down to a book a week. I do, however, read very quickly, and I can often read at work so that helps!

I also do not sleep much so during periods of insomnia I read a lot more!

So basically, you are healthy, and I am not lol!

message 18: by Dorna (new)

Dorna (crimsonskyx) Depends on the size of the book and prior engagements during the day. If its 400 pgs and below it takes me 2 days to get through it. If its George R.R. Martins or Raymond E. Feists book it takes 4-6 days xD

message 19: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth | 11 comments it usually takes me a day to read a book I read kind of quick thats why I like series

I agree that you read faster when it is a book you like, but even though I have read lots all my life, I am still quite slow. Buy YA books usually go by faster, as they are often easier reads than many other books.

And yeah, I need bookmarks too, but I always lose them, so I end up using whatever I have at hand, usually the receipt from the book:P

message 21: by * sept19xx * (new)

* sept19xx * (sept19xx) When I'm not at work,my usual routine has always been "Reading All Night,Sleeping All Day". Most of the time I can finish a book-series that contains 3-4 books the whole night. It's been a habit of mine that I don't stop until I reach the finish line. I sometimes seek for more stories when I feel like something is hanging or missing from how it ends. Been a reader since elementary days so I guess that explains everything. LOL! Talking about being not NORMAL, well yeah COUNT me in. Certified reader-freak as I am called by some of my friends. :)

ali ᵏᵉᵉᵖ ʸᵒᵘʳ ᵐᵒᵘᵗʰ ˢʰᵘᵗ (time_wont_fly) A bunch of my friends are readers, so that's where I got my reading habits from. I absolutely couldn't stay up all night (unless I'm with friends). I wouldn't be able to function the next day. Although, I really would like to read all night, but unfortounately it is impossible for me. :)

message 23: by Jennifer (last edited Jun 10, 2013 04:05PM) (new)

Jennifer Harris If it's stupid, then i try to finish it in one sitting in the daytime. I don't usually stay up at night reading stupid or boring books.

I can get through a good book (350-500 pages) I really like in one day (or night). I tend to read really fast tho. My sis actually used to get upset because I would spend money on a book then be done with it in no time flat.

message 24: by Kath (new)

Kath Lau (kath_reads) It depends on the book. If it's interesting, I can finish it (300-400 pages) in 2 days. If not, it will take me a week :D or sometimes i will put it down and start to read a different book.

but I've considered myself as a slow reader (i'm also a slow eater. haha!)

message 25: by Beatrice (new)

Beatrice (beatricemasalunga) Depends on the book. Sometimes when I am hooked with I tend to finish ot within a day. Sometimes I have a reading slump when I couldn't get through it.

ali ᵏᵉᵉᵖ ʸᵒᵘʳ ᵐᵒᵘᵗʰ ˢʰᵘᵗ (time_wont_fly) I think that is so true! I can usually read a book in two to three days (during the summer, mind you), but if I don't really like it, it'll take me about a week or two.

If you don't like it, will you still finish it though? Because I have kind of a problem leaving books, even if I dislike them, I don't like leaving them half-read.

message 28: by Turtlefrog (new)

Turtlefrog I read every chance I get and I have books everywhere. In my car, in my purse, at work, in by bedroom, in the living room, and then I also read on my phone. So I have about 5 books I can read at any given time (one at work, one in my car, one in my purse, one in my bedroom, and finally one on my phone)but I usually read the one in my bedroom and the one on my phone on a more consistant basis then all the others. Not to say that the others are not interesting but these are the most convenient for me. Usually takes me anywhere from a couple of days to a week to read a book but as most of you know life usually gets in the way and sometimes it takes me longer. But once I start a book I have to finish. I can not not finish. Even if it is the worst book ever written I have to finish. (What if by some miracle it actually does get better?!)

If I don't like it at all, I probably will finish it, then rant aabout it later. XD Like you, I don't like leaving books half-read. I hate it! The only execption is if its taking me, like, a year to get through... XD

message 30: by Baker (new)

Baker (thewind) | 208 comments I read all the time, the problem is finding the books I need. I can read books fast, I mean all in one sitting because I'm just that impatient to finish books lol

Claudia the Night Owl (claudiamancilla) | 34 comments Hmm well on average I take about a day and a half to read a book ('bout 300 pgs) in a month I usually read from 10 to 15 books.

message 32: by Unidragonfrag (new)

Unidragonfrag Typically, I'm a fast reader especially if the book is very interesting to me (and some books are just easy reads). I tend to let reading place top over my other necessities so lately I haven't been reading as much as I'd like. I go into lala land while reading and sometimes people have to yell to get my attention, so yeah.

message 33: by -RininTa- (new)

-RininTa- (rinz) | 151 comments I am a slow reader. I am distracted easily but if the book is very interesting I can finish the book in 2 days :p Usually I read in my bedroom because I like to read in quiet place. I also like to bring along my book whenever I go in case I find a good place to read.

message 34: by Cindy (new)

Cindy (cindypp) I have always been a fast reader. Although once I got to college that changed. I find that now I can read fiction rather quickly, but non-fiction I take my time on. I suppose that's because most of my non-fiction that I read I am trying to learn something from while fiction is just for fun. I can generally read a YA book in a day (depending on my kids sometimes- haha!), but it can take me a week to finish something non-fiction.

message 35: by Trinity (new)

Trinity I like to read at night because for some reason, I read faster when it comes to night. I dont know why. I like to be on my bed when I usually read. But if I had to pick a place I wanted to read, it would be at the beavh when the sun is going down because its more leaceful, and its just relaxing to read at that time of day (:

message 36: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyspatterson) I read at night like a lot of other people here and I average about three to five days for one book during the summer. As for the school year (college student) I can read a book in about 2 weeks, homework comes first unfortunately.

message 37: by Silvia (new)

Silvia Meadows (smeadows1984) | 75 comments I like reading at night. I sit up in bed next to my husband with my dog between us. I love the soft glow of my lamp. If I'm reading a hard cover book, I have to take the jacket off - I don't like/want to wrinkle the jackets. The artwork is just too beautiful to mess up. I do some reading in the morning, but I don't focus that well. haha. I'm an average speed reader. It takes me about a week to read a book - sometimes less and sometimes more.

I totally agree with having a quiet space and toting your book along. I do the same thing too! =o)

message 39: by [deleted user] (new)

I'm getting faster - I used to read really slowly, these days I read about 100 pages every day :)

message 40: by Jenna (new)

Jenna Zark | 8 comments I used to be an extremely fast reader; then slowed down when I became a mom and time eroded my reading days. Now my son is older - but working full time and writing - my reading time is precious to me. But I haven't been able to speed up very much at all.

message 41: by Rosie (new)

Rosie (deadlynightshade99292699) I am a fast reader but have this bad habit of listening to music while reading even though I had to sit through a seminar that was solely about the risks of multitasking with technology. Whoops. :/

message 42: by Rachel (new)

Rachel (APCB Reviews) (gr8rach) If I like the book I can read really quickly. If it's boring it will take me forever to read! I read quicker on real books than ebooks.

message 43: by Nikita (new)

Nikita (nikkibee95) | 3 comments For me it totally depends on the book itself. If the book is really really good I will fly through the pages, but if the book is slow and intesting I wil take much longer. I am a fast read so even if a book is boring I finish it pretty quick.

message 44: by Maya (new)

Maya Pankratz (simply__stardustx) | 98 comments Usually it takes me 1-4 days to finish a book, but it depends on whether or not it's interesting. It might take me one day to read a 600 page book I love and it might take me a week to read a 100 page I don't like.

message 45: by Sabrina (new)

Sabrina (forebodinq) It usually takes me a week or two to finish a book, mostly because I only have time to read for long periods of time (longer than half an hour) over the weekend.

For me, it's the opposite actually. In between home and school has given me about 2-3 hours of time, to read.

message 48: by وضحه (new)

وضحه (wadhha_reads) I think i have so many Habits. Like for example i can't read unless i'm in quiet place and I can't stop unless i finish a whole chapter or a page. Also when reading i get so into the book that i can't hear anything around me my mom always has to slap my arm to get my attention xD. one bad thing is that if i finish a novel and move into another one i'd forget most of the novel that i read before ...I only remember the main story and a few details
