This is an open discussion of Susan Buck-Morss's book, The Dialectics of Seeing: Walter Benjamin and the Arcades Project. There is not set schedule for this book; read and comment as you like.

Buck-Morss provides good insights to what The Arcades Project might have been, had Benjamin lived to complete his work.

Excellent!

I'm still finalizing the schedule, but I can tell you that we will take Nathan's advice and read the two essays at the back of The Arcades Project by Rolf Tiedmann (p. 929) and Lisa Fittko (p. 946) first and discuss them beginning on 2/17. We will begin the main text after that.

Also, as you're doing, I'd recommend reading the Buck-Morss book concurrently.

Travis (travism) | 49 comments I feel like we should be getting some sort of qualification or certification at the end of the read.

The contrast between the two books and Buck-Morss' more academically analysed interpretation of Benjamin's work is going to be really interesting.

Well, it was originally planned as a non-credit course, but if you want a certificate, you'll have to take a final exam...
