Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) | 5137 comments I still need to read book 2. I am so behind. We're creeping up on Halloween though and this would be a good series pick for the month. I can't believe I forgot to do the spooky group read nominations for October. That's the first time ever!

message 4: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 345 comments I think I got this one through NetGalley to review as well as Game

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) | 5137 comments That would be smart of NG to offer it up again. It's sort of a little known series, even though the book that I did read was very good. I like this author's writing style. He wrote another book I thought was quite good Boy Toy.

message 6: by Gwennie (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) I haven't read it yet... wait, is it out yet?! I thought it wasn't out yet!

message 7: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 345 comments it was available as a download now on netgalley a week or so ago and I grabbed it

message 8: by Gwennie (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) Damn damn, lmao. I didn't know that. It looks like it released on the 9th, so I'll get it when I get paid.

Dee (austhokie) | 345 comments sorry I liked - I have I Hunt Killers and Game, but not the new one

message 10: by Gwennie (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) Ohh, I read the first two already. I liked them a lot.

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) | 5137 comments I decided to refresh on the characters before jumping back into this series, since it's been a while back for me from reading I Hunt Killers.

Just finished Career Day (Jasper Dent, #0.5) by Barry Lyga and I really liked it. In just a few pages, you get a feel for the character personalities and you get inside of Jasper's head to know some of what he's feeling.

The story is free to read here and only takes a few minutes : http://www.wattpad.com/43105709-caree...

If you're unsure whether or not to read I Hunt Killers, this little short might get you interested.

message 15: by shanghao (new)

shanghao (sanshow) Just starting this book. So far I'm enjoying the story and the writing is fast-paced, young and fuss-free.

Really curious how Jazz would transform into the protagonist of a new series. I've never watched Dexter too so all these sneaks inside what details serial killers pay attention to are quite interesting (and most of all, fun)

message 16: by Diane (new)

Diane | 1234 comments Jasper Dent is what inspired me to watch Dexter. I loved the series!

message 17: by Rachel (new)

Rachel | 560 comments @Sanny, I completely agree with you about "fuss-free." That's a great way to describe this writing-style.

It's been a long time (maybe ever?) since I've read a YA male POV. I'm loving it! I'm about a quarter of the way through and the story is great.

However... I am getting a little bored of Jasper's constant inner monologue about turning into his dad. Get back to the murder mystery!

R.A. Desilets | 375 comments This was an audiobook read for me, and the narrator did a really good job with it. I'm hoping I can snag the sequel via audiobook too. I need a refresher though! It's been too long since I read the last one, so I might read that wattpad short story :) thanks for sharing that, Stacia!

shanghao (sanshow) Just finished it! Nicely paced and can't wait to continue with the next instalment. Even though it's YA, it can pass off as an adult mystery with a simpler construct. Not too convinced on the chemistry between Jazz and Connie but other than that I loved the overall feel of the story.

And Stacia, thanks for the link to the short! Great prologue to add on to the book.

message 20: by Diane (new)

Diane | 1234 comments There is a lot more Jazz and Connie in the next book and I personally felt the chemistry there.

message 21: by Hafshie (new)

Hafshie (hafshie09) | 2 comments currently reading it.. This is my first YA-suspense/thriller read and I'm starting to think this is a nice start. I'm already thrilled and my curiosity about the whole story is boiling up!

message 22: by Gwennie (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) I loved the Jasper Dent series. I thought it was extremely well written and believable.

I personally loved Howie!

message 23: by Rachel (new)

Rachel | 560 comments I'm loving all of the random details about the characters. Example: Connie doesn't like it when Jasper touches her hair, Jasper gets tattoos for Howie because Howie can't have them, the weirdness of the Grandmother (including her love of garlic crumbs on her mac and cheese and her desire to unleash "the hellfire o' Jesus" on anyone who visits the house)

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) | 5137 comments Those are great observations, Rachel. Those can be the little things that take a book from okay to great.

I think that short might actually help with this because I recall having similar feelings to yours and I liked seeing Jazz and Connie's meeting in the short.

message 25: by Gwennie (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) I think you have to trust that Jazz feels the way he says he does with Connie, because he holds himself back when it comes to actually showing it. Perhaps that's why it's hard to feel the chemistry between them.

I love the friendship between Howie and Jazz.

message 26: by Stacia (the 2010 club), groupaholic, YA-MA founder (new)

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) | 5137 comments You have a good point there. Because of Jazz's upbringing, he's not necessarily going to react the same way to feelings that other people might.

message 27: by Gwennie (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) Exactly. He doesn't trust himself, so he keeps her at arms length as much as possible.

message 28: by Rachel (new)

Rachel | 560 comments I appreciate how Lyga has made Jazz so aware of his past and what it could mean for how he shapes his own identity.

HOWEVER... I'm getting kinda of tired of the fact that every chapter kind of devolves into his stressing about it for a few pages. It's getting a little repetitive. Maybe it's for that reason that I did a little fistpump when Connie (view spoiler) I was right there with her on that one.

message 29: by Anna (new)

Anna | 231 comments I finished this a couple days ago and I'm still not sure what I think. The story line was good but I wasn't a fan of the descriptive memories of his father. This may have something to do with the fact that I listened to the audio and the narrator does a great job with Billy Dent's voice, making it that much more real.

I kind of agree with Rachel about Jazz's repetitive thoughts but at the same time I know they are plausible thoughts for him to have. Having a background of mental illness in my family there are always those question "what if," "does this mean," or "what can I do to avoid it."

Kristina Just finished listening to the GAME and I love the series. Waiting for the 3rd book to become available at my library.

Has anyone read the prequel stories?

message 32: by Stacia (the 2010 club), groupaholic, YA-MA founder (new)

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) | 5137 comments I've read one of them and liked it. The one I read showed how Connie and Jasper met.
