Nordlys Just wondering if anyone else here plays videogames. I love all medias that can tell great stories, and videogames is definitely one of them. And there are some excellent dystopian ones out there as well.

David Litwack | 8 comments I've played from time to time. I started years ago, playing The Legend of Zelda (the original quest game) with my two sons. More recently, with my son grown on on the opposite coast, we would meet once a week in Azeroth (World of Warcraft) and go on virtual quests together. I used that experience in my latest novel (Along the Watchtower, being published June 3rd). The main character is an Iraq war vet who was a gamer, playing WOW with his squad. After a devastating, injury, he finds his way back from his trauma by dwelling in a WOW-like dream world, where he searches in dark places on a quest to come to terms with his past.

Nordlys I love The Legend of Zelda:) I've only played WoW a little bit, but I know how it is, and your story sounds very interesting!

Bret Wellman Ha yea, thats my inspiration. My goal is to one day make the jump from authoring books, to creating video games. I've always been a final fantasy and halo fan myself. saints row 4 is out today (i am doing my best to ignore it so i can get some work done)

Sarah | 10 comments I miss the classic days of gaming with JRPG's, that didn't have quite so much, "Let's drop the zombie.":P

I share that dream, I'd love to create videogames:)

I'm playing Final Fantasy VI now, and though I love many of today's games, with their amazing stories, believable facial expressions, and beautiful locations, the good old games just has something that modern games are unable to create in my opinion.

And I agree Georgia, the Bioshock series is brilliant.

I bought FF6 offline a year or so ago and played it for a while, never ended up beating it. I have a station on pandora I use when I am righting, it mostly plays FF7 and FF8 music. Those were my golden years in gaming.

Nordlys FF7 and 8 were both brilliant, and will always be two of the absolute best gaming experiences I've ever had:) Too bad the newer FF games are not as good (in my opinion).

message 12: by Bret (new)

Bret Wellman Yea, I stopped after FF10. I have meant to get the latest one for a while now but I just never do.

message 13: by Nordlys (new)

Nordlys FFXIII was a huge disappointment in my opinion, I struggled to get through it all. I really hope they find their way back to making really good ones...

Sarah | 10 comments My favorites were always six and seven. Eight was ok. After that, not my favorite.D:

I think it was nine that made me not like fantasy so much. I prefer cyberpunk these days. I loved the concept of magi-tech though.

message 15: by Bret (new)

Bret Wellman Yea, I struggled with nine as well. I thought ten was pretty good though. I heard XIII was extremely repetitive. I wish they would go back to the open world concept though.

message 16: by Nordlys (new)

Nordlys I think ten was better than nine. XIII is very repetitive, and extremely linear; as in, you literally just have to walk in a line, there is no room for exploring on your own. Hardly any open world, and the open world you do get is really really small... It can't be called an open world, more like a confined zoo... Everywhere you go it's the same monsters, just with a different color and name... No, do yourself a favour and skip that one.

I read that with today's demand for good graphics the creators of the FF series said that an open world would be too big and just impossible. But I think that is silly. They don't have to go to the same length as, say Skyrim. They can do like they did before. Why is it so unthinkable for them to keep some of the old? They can have great graphics in cities and such, but use the same open world technique as they used in the older games: characters looking really big while running across a world map with cities, forests, caves, etc. scattered around. That was great, and I am sure that would work fine today as well!

message 17: by Bret (new)

Bret Wellman Exactly! Spend all their efforts on the cities. I would be compleatly good with ff7 open world graphics if they did that.

K. | 32 comments I played my share of games in high school, but haven't played since. However, people who like video games as well as this genre of books might really love a novel called The End Games which combines gaming with an apocalyptic story: http://yadystopiafiction.wordpress.co...
