I think that plus size pageants are over due and that this lovely young lady is the best start we have.

Again, this is a great first step, and while nowhere near where we need to be, it is about bloody time designers realized that we are here to stay, and that we need to look as fabulous as we truly are.

Again, it is not perfect but it is a great step in the right direction.

Here we go with a topic that is not perfect, but a step in the right direction. Mellisa McCarthy is on the front cover of "Elle" and it is plus for those of us of size to see one of our own on the cover. There are those who feel that fact that she is wearing "bulky coat" is a drawback. I have seen plenty of "thin" women in "bulky coats" on other covers, so am not bothered by it too much. Frankly, I think she looks stunning and proves that woman of fuller bodies can and do look sexy.
Is it perfect? No. If she were in a too tight outfit, I would not be happy, and yes, I would like to see her in a flattering and sexy outfit as her thinner counterparts in the magazine, but still it is a good step in a right direction. We cannot expect the world to change in our favor overnight. It took a long time to change social and legal standings on race, homosexuality, and women's voting rights,so this is a small step, but a step none the less.
See the cover for yourself.

As for the Melissa McCarthy cover, I think she looks lovely, and it is indeed a step in the right direction. What irks me was not the coat, but the fact that there were two alternate covers, and my store got 3 copies of the McCarthy cover and about 20 of the Penelope Cruz cover. Seriously, they couldn't have sent a more even mix?
I salute Debenham's for their highly equitable selection of models. It truly seems that they get it.
I really wish this idea had been around when I was younger. I could have really used this too.

The sad thing is, it doesn't change with age.

Lupita Nyong'o was named one of "People's 50 most beautiful" and made the cover. While she is not plus sized by any stretch, she is the first dark skinned black woman to make the cover of this issue. Not only did she win an Oscar for "12 years a slave" but she is very humble about all the attention she is getting. At a recent award ceremony for "Ebony" I believe, she read part of a letter from a young fan that stated that Lupita was a hero to her for being dark and beautiful and that the fan took strength from this fact and is now feeling that she too can be beautiful.
So why am I so happy? Because this challenges standards of beauty. Lupita herself said that growing up the standard for black women is light skinned with straight hair. There has been negative reaction about her being on the cover, and that has been mostly from black males. To me this is the beginning of what I hope will be a good change and challenge to how we see beauty and that changes will happen in fashion and other industries. It will be slow, but who knows, in a few years we many see a plus sized woman on the cover, and that will a be wonderful day indeed.

I feel that by admitting that they have a responsibility and that they are working to change that is a big deal. I know that a "plus size model" is really a woman who is a healthy weight, but it is a step in a good and right direction as we are seeing an attitude shift from the ultra skinny impossibly thin women we have been bombarded with for so long.
Yes, until truly plus sized woman graces the cover of "Elle" or "Vogue" we will not have truly changed attitudes or shifted social standings. This also means that retailers have truly plus sized clothes that are affordable and as well made as their smaller sized counterparts then and only then will we have truly made it.
But I will take any small steps we can get.
