Laura (apenandzen) The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian was terrific! Part YA, part graphic novel (well just a little bit), and 100% terrific. He's written many others too! Anyone read any of his and would like to discuss?

Tahleen | 229 comments This has been on my TBR list for MONTHS. I would love to discuss it when I've finally gotten my hands on a copy/have time to read it!

Laura (apenandzen) YAY Tahleen, you won't be sorry. It was a terrific book! Alexie's not very well known, but I hope that changes because he's very clever and I really enjoyed it! I read books (audio) at night when I can't sleep and I was actually laughing out loud in bed! It takes alot to make me laugh out loud, so...definitely worth a read.

Laura (apenandzen) Actually, this book won the 2007 National Book Award for Young Adult Literature. Good stuff.

Here's a link to his website:

Tahleen | 229 comments I knew it won the National Book Award, I actually think that's how I heard of it on this site. I'd seen it at B&N (I work there) and it kind of piqued my interest but after reading about it on here I was even more interested. I'll check out his site.

I also want to read The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven by him, though that's an adult book.

Laura (apenandzen) I was just looking thru again - the illustrations are really a trip. I audio-ed this and requested the actual book because I knew it was appearing on some graphic novel shelves and wondered why. I really think you have to "read" this one to fully appreciate it.

message 7: by Tahleen (new)

Tahleen | 229 comments Yeah, I heard there were a lot of cartoons, isn't the main character supposed to be kind of a cartoonist? I started reading it at work one night but didn't get too far.

message 8: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) Yeah, he is..they are great. And the audiobook is performed by the author too, and is also really good. I don't always like author performances, but this one is good. He both writes and speaks very convincingly from the teenage point of view.

Tahleen | 229 comments Ahh you are getting me pumped for it haha. I can't wait to be done with school so I can read everything I want to.

message 10: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) This one moves really fast, too. So no excuses!

message 11: by Tahleen (new)

Tahleen | 229 comments Haha okay! I'll push it to the top of my TBR (in my head at least).

message 12: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) hee hee, maybe you can work it into the Challenge.

message 13: by Tahleen (new)

Tahleen | 229 comments Oh I need to check that out! *goes off on a quest*

Jamie (The Perpetual Page-Turner) (perpetualpageturner) | 44 comments We read an excerpt in my Issues in Contemporary Lit class in college..I really enjoyed it! I've been meaning to pick something of his up.

message 15: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) Yeah, and if you're not a Native American, then his books would fit in to our Challenge as a 25 point task (#3)! And so worth it, you'll love it.

message 16: by Renee (new)

Renee (elenarenee) | 82 comments Wow I am more familiar with his poetry. I didnt realize her wrote YA also

message 17: by Tahleen (new)

Tahleen | 229 comments So... don't know if you saw it on the other thread for this book, but I read this and loved it!

message 18: by Misty (new)

Misty | 1505 comments Loved Diary and have read a few of his short stories (see The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven. Great stuff). I love his ability to mix humor and sadness. I think I've marked just about everything by him as to read, but haven't had a chance for anything else. Maybe if we do another challenge, I'll work in Flight A Novel...

message 19: by Renee (new)

Renee (elenarenee) | 82 comments There is a movie based on Lone Ranger and Tonto. It was actually pretty good

message 20: by Misty (new)

Misty | 1505 comments Based in Alexie's story? Or based on the old tv show?

message 21: by Tahleen (new)

Tahleen | 229 comments Yeah, I think it's called Smoke Signals, right? It's based on The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven I think.

message 22: by Misty (new)

Misty | 1505 comments Hmm... I did not know this. I will have to look into it.

message 23: by Renee (new)
