Lys (lysrowan) Genre Challenge - July 01-July 31

The Rules:

Read a book that corresponds to the listed genres. Books do not double-count. Try something new!

There are seven "categories", with three genre "types" each. There should be something for everyone. T

If I've really neglected a genre, let me know before July starts. :)

Medium: Read at least 6 books (total), with selections from at least four categories.
Hard: Read at least 8 books (total), with at least one corresponding to a selection in each category.

Genre List

(Feel free to YA any of the categories.)

1. Adventure - Thriller - Western
2. Chick Lit - Graphic Novel or Manga - Horror
3. Classic - Poetry - Nonfiction
4. Urban Fantasy - Paranormal Romance - Fantasy of a different flavor (high, dark, etc)
5. Modern Fiction - Philosophy - Religion
6. Fairy Tale - Steampunk - Historical Fiction
7. Science Fiction - Mystery - Magical Realism

Substitute category:

8. Humor/satire, dystopia/ post-apocalyptic, erotica and contemporary romance are also possibilities.

Lys (lysrowan) Gwenn wrote: "2: graphic novel

maybe some more

what is magical realism?"

"a kind of modern fiction in which fabulous and fantastical events are included in a narrative that otherwise maintains the 'reliable' tone of objective realistic report, designating a tendency of the modern novel to reach beyond the confines of realism and draw upon the energies of fable, folk tale, and myth while maintaining a strong contemporary social relevance. The fantastic attributes given to characters in such novels—levitation, flight, telepathy, telekinesis—are among the means that magic realism adopts in order to encompass the often phantasmagorical political realities of the 20th century."

A very good example (and a good book) is Rushdie's
Midnight's Children. Gabriel Garcia Marquez has a few as well. Louise Erdrich too. And... found a list: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category...

I think you would like the genre.

message 6: by Gwenn (new)

Gwenn (idlecuriosity) It sounded cool, but the list of examples is super awesome to have. I woulda not asked, but i figured other people might be curious too.

Az (أسماء) i always have problem knowing what genre the stories are!

I'm doing easy

1)Silver Hollow by Jennifer Silverwood(Fantasy-Chick Lit)
2)Girl of Nightmares by Kendare Blake (YA Horror)
3)Lighting Thief by Rick Riordan (Fantasy Adventure)
4)Paper Towns by John Green (YA Mystery)

message 8: by Gwenn (new)

Gwenn (idlecuriosity) humor would be a good genre for substitute, maybe political or satire as options also.

Tracks by Louise Erdrich is another really good one. Midnight's Children is AWESOME though. I have it in hard copy and on audible, if you want a borrow.
Another really popular one is One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel García Márquez . I hated this when I read it, but that was years ago, so I might try it again soon. I also own it, if you want a borrow. Despite remembering that I hate it, I also remember that one of the coolest conceptions of hearth wizardry/ hedge magic I've ever read was built in it. So, there's that.

Alyssia, how about YA and Contemporary Romance?

message 17: by Lys (last edited Jun 24, 2013 12:49PM) (new)

Lys (lysrowan) I rather assumed that YA would be encompassed by any of the others, at the reader's discretion, but it's a good point nonetheless.
What is the difference between chick lit and contemp romance? I honestly don't know.
