Alexa | 2 comments I read this recently, maybe last year, and it wasn't new, but it wasn't very old either. It was fiction, and I think the cover has a house on it, or otherwise a feather quill, or a book, but I could be wrong. It was blue.

There's a sort of prologue in an old book shop. I think the world was coming to an end or something like that. There's a letter inside an old book, I think. The main narrative features a bookmaker who has made fantastic creations like books that you can read at any angle and stuff like that. Then he receives a commission to bind a never ending book. He thinks he can do it and he moves to the commissioner's castle to do it. (It's in a country that doesn't exist but I think they all had Germanic names.) Everything in the castle moves--he would go to sleep one night and wake up on the other side of a castle. He falls in love with the daughter of the duke/king/castle owner. She gets pregnant and gives birth... They are exiled, or something... Then the second part of the book has the daughter in a distant land... There's something about a ship... That's where I finally put it down.

Ficie | 65 comments I think the book you are looking for is Salamander by Thomas Wharton. I read parts of it some time ago, but didn't get as far as you (gave up before the girl gives birth).
