Its a good premise. During the height of the cold war, the soviets discovered a new powerful element that could only be mined at a secret location in russia. This new element has extraordinary quantum physics rhat promises a lot of power for russia as America dominates with their nuclear progression. This included time travelling, however they had not vouched on its side effect. In certain conditions, the element turns everyone into monsters and destroys the town which has since been quarantined, abondoned and erased of the map together with the super element. 60 years later flyby us spy planes picks up a surge of radioactivity and decide to land and investigate. Thus the gaming adventure begins with our protagonist walking through time portals back and forth the 50s and present day.
Its quite a frightening game actually. Ever corner I turn im in fear of facing a really scary zombie monster or bump into ghosts of the 50s or actually falling through time rips littered throught the location. This is quite a good game so far.

It looks like it is a first-person shooter, which I'm not really fond of. Are there other aspects to the game play that would make this a little more of an adventure game more like Assassin's Creed?

No, I'll be honest. so far (mind you I havent got that far in), it may not be offering enough to make you a convert to FPS. But its a very full on Resident Evil type game with lots of time travel. However, its not anywhere in the league of Bioshock Infinity which I just finished. There is a reason gaming community are hailing Bioshock as game of the year (though my game of the century is The Last of Us)
So If you are looking to play another time travel game, dont bother with this one yet, go for Bioshock Infinite next. Yes it is a first person shooter but trust me, it has a story that will both confuse and blow your mind away in its revelations. Its visuals are a sight to behold and voice over performances are great. The gameplay is hugely entertaining with. It is a fast moving action packed game so I am afraid you wont find any opportunities for stealth move strategies, its all guns blazing but with several approaches you can choose.
Let me finish this one off and I'll give you more info on if its worth playing.

There is one thing I hate about some popular first person shooters. Although they can have a very polished production, some great narratives, good voice over acting, they utterly spoils the immersion by not having the protagonist that we control talking back. All conversations are stupidly one way. I dont understand the logic behind this because some other first person shooters such as Bioshock Infinite and Deus Ex:Human Revolution have the protagonist talking back easily and creates a more lively conversations etc.
Its very irritating from a narrative perspective. Rant over.

AC is the best game evaahh. But the first person shooter ones are fun too, the older resident evil games were good. Not too fond of the new Lara Croft one though. I wanted to smack the crap outta her with all the whining they infused in her.
So Bioshock is your rec? Wonder if I can borrow it yet roundd here...

Bioshock, defintiely, although there is a female supporting protagonist that you might wanna smack the crap outta. Wish I could lend you mine but I bought it off Steam :(
Aw I like the new Lara Croft, my edition even came with a dolly, hours of fun moving her in all sorts of positions...I mean action poses...oh man, I really shouldnt be encouraging this!

Havent had a chance to continue with Singularity on my PS3 as my Living room has become unliveable for a while with windows work replacement and decor getting in the way.
I will be starting E.B's "best game eva", Assassins Creed 2 on the PC though :)

Wait! I didn't get that Croft edition!! No fair. Girls like to play with dolls too. :(
Hurry through AC 2, 'cause AC 3 is my fav-of-favs. I'm partial to the time period in #3.
Ugh. Home improvement, hum? Sounds like a fun time ;)
This will be the next game I play and will let you guys know how good it is. Gets a healthy 77% critic rating on Metacritics (a website that accumulates all popular critic ratings).
Has anyone else played this then?
