I started this and was liking it be needing something more adult to read. I think I'll read this next since it's a group read.

I finished this a couple of days ago. What a surprise! Yeh, it's YA, but it's a lot more too. I loved it. It has a surprise ending, at least I was surprised at how it ended. I loved it!

Dana (danarohinsky) | 89 comments I just finished this, and I have no words for how beautiful it is.

Ed Lehman | 24 comments A wonderful book. Loved it. Poetic, real, touching. I'll have to pick up the author's other works now. Thanks to whomever recommended this one.

I immediately bought 4 more of his books, I loved it so much! I've read 2 so far -- Everything Begins and Ends at the Kentucky Club and Last Night I Sang to the Monster -- both great.

Tim | 152 comments Simply marvelous. I am so glad this book was nominated here as I doubt a YA novel would otherwise come to my attention. There's so much to like - Sáenz's lyrical writing that still manages to be minimalist, the structure of the story, the perfect pacing.

I most appreciated his realistic depictions of two teen-age boys as gentle and essentially good kids. Dante and Ari are both outsiders, loners in their own ways, and discovering what sort of men they are going to be.

Tenderness is more often considered a feminine quality and if exhibited by a male, perceived as weakness. Sáenz deftly upends that notion, showing that tenderness is every bit a masculine quality and an empowering one at that.

The ending fell a flat for me. After all the struggles, things were wrapped up too easily and quickly for my taste but the story is a brilliant one nonetheless.

Dana (danarohinsky) | 89 comments Great review, Tim.

I agree it wrapped up a little too quickly -- though I loved how the support of his family gave Ari the courage to be with Dante -- but mostly because I just didn't want it to ever end!

Nancy | 2838 comments I'm reading it now.

Sally Bellerose | 11 comments OK I am convinced to go to my local indie and buy the book. So many strong recommendations from friends and folks in this group. I am not usually drawn to YA.

J. | 53 comments I wanted to like the book, I really did, but by the end I was really disappointed. I left a fairly detailed review about why.

Julia | 271 comments See, I'm in the loveloveloved it camp.

This is why I read, to discover beautiful, spare, lovely novels like this.

Ari/ Aristotle is a kid (I don't want to call him a character, as far as I know he's a living, breathing person) who barely talks. (This isn't a spoiler, it's about craft.) Yet the day after Elmore Leonard died, it's told almost entirely in dialogue.

I read a lot of YA, very little of it is anywhere as good as this novel.

Thank you for nominating this book, that'll be on my best of 2013 list.

And I too want to read Benjamin Alire Sáenz's other books.

Dana (danarohinsky) | 89 comments So I went all fangirl on this book and made a playlist.

Nancy | 2838 comments I agree with J. I didn't love this book nearly as much as I wanted to. See my review:

Sally Bellerose | 11 comments Thirty pages in I love the main character. Wondering if they are going to remain too perfect to ring true.

Sally Bellerose | 11 comments Didn't love, but really liked this book. Will rec to my 14 year old niece. Rushed ending. But I am a harsh critic of endings.

Alicja (darkwingduckie7) | 91 comments I just read it too and was disappointed in the ending. It was such great writing, I just wished for more character development for Ari. But I still liked it a lot and I'll definitely check out another one of his books.

Thomas | 14 comments This might literally be my favorite book. You can find my review here, and I'd love to discuss it with people.

There is this: The Inexplicable Logic of My Life
A “mesmerizing, poetic exploration of family, friendship, love and loss” from the acclaimed author of Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe. (New York Times Book Review)

I too was surprised by the ending. It was a wonderful story, but the ending gave it a maturity and originality I didn't expect.
