Elizabeth (merelyreading) When posting details of books, could you please be aware that people who use the Goodreads App on a mobile device cannot see book covers - they appear as a blank blue box. It can be quite frustrating when the rest of the post makes no sense at all!

Example of how to post book details - To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee To Kill a Mockingbird. I know it means having to enter the details twice, or even three times if you want the author details too, but it does help.

Kathy G. Great advice. I did not know this. :-)

Maddie (shoegirl81) | 20 comments Do we have to post the book cover or can we just link to the title?

When you have added a title, the clicking the author tab will have the authors name at the top

Elizabeth (merelyreading) Maggie wrote: "Do we have to post the book cover or can we just link to the title?"

No, there's no need to do the book cover and the title. Just title will do. Author's name link can be added if you want, and especially if the book title isn't well known!

message 7: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth (merelyreading) How to hide spoilers - type < spoiler >, but don't leave spaces between the < and the word spoiler >. It should look like this (view spoiler)

message 8: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth (merelyreading) The polls are now open for voting on the Fiction, Non-Fiction, and Classics Group Reads for August 2013. The polls will close on 12th July and the books with the most votes will be announced.

message 9: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth Arnold | 7 comments I'm probably being stupid, but where is the poll?

message 10: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth (merelyreading) On the home page for Book Vipers, and the other two polls you will need to click on More Polls to see.

message 11: by Anne Marie (new)

Anne Marie Plum Elizabeth Joy- I don't know if you can see them on the app, if that's what you're using... I had to go to the website to find them.

the website is the place to look. The app is hopeless for that sort of thing

message 13: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth (merelyreading) That's true - the app is handy but for polls you have to go to the website.

Links to the three polls are in our welcome box if any one is having trouble navigating! :)

message 15: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth (merelyreading) The three monthly group reads (Fiction, Non-Fiction, and Classic novel) are now have two groups each - No Spoilers, and Spoilers allowed.

Be careful where you post your comments. If you post a spoiler in the No Spoiler thread it will now be deleted.

Sorry if this sounds harsh, but we have had complaints about spoilers ruining the reading experience for some members of the group. This seems the easiest option.

We don't want to prevent full discussion of books on here, but it can be frustrating if you're told the ending when you've only got part way through it!

message 16: by Bionic Jean (new)

Bionic Jean (bionicjean) This is a brilliant idea! I thoroughly approve. LOL

message 17: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth (merelyreading) We will be opening the nominations threads for the September reads at the beginning of next week, so you might like to start having a think about what you may want to nominate to read - Fiction, Non-Fiction and Classic (pub. pre 1900).

Reminding everyone that the nominations all need to available in all formats ie if it has only just been published and is only available in hardback please keep that one in reserve until the paperback is available.

Also, to make it to the poll each nominated book needs to have been seconded by another person, to avoid long lists of books entered for voting.

message 18: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth (merelyreading) If you have joined us from The Perks of Being a Bookworm, and want to copy over your saved challenges, book lists etc, please let us know and we can create a separate section for you.

Gill Elizabeth wrote: "If you have joined us from The Perks of Being a Bookworm, and want to copy over your saved challenges, book lists etc, please let us know and we can create a separate section for you."

Yes please!

message 20: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth (merelyreading) If I open up a new section then you can put your own headings and folders in there and arrange it how you want. Hope that's ok?

That's great. Thanks. It will be stretching my IT skills to the limit, but it'll be good for me!

Here's the link http://www.goodreads.com/topic/group_...

For each new section just create a new topic within your folder.

Any questions, please ask.

Done - link here http://www.goodreads.com/topic/group_...

Just add your topics when you are ready.

message 26: by Pink (new)

Pink I'm a new convert from The Perks group too, a new folder or thread to keep track of all my ongoing challenges would be great, thanks.

message 28: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth (merelyreading) Next Monday, 2nd September, we will be opening the threads for nominating the October group reads for fiction, non-fiction, and classic novel (post 1900). Have a good think over the coming week about the books you would like to read in October!

Leslie Elizabeth wrote: "Next Monday, 2nd September, we will be opening the threads for nominating the October group reads for fiction, non-fiction, and classic novel (post 1900). Have a good think over the coming week ab..."

Does "classic novel (post 1900)" mean that the group won't ever be reading anything from before 1900? Most of the classics I am interested in reading are from the 1800s...

message 30: by Bionic Jean (new)

Bionic Jean (bionicjean) I think it alternates monthly - one pre-1900 and the next post-1900 if I remember rightly.

message 31: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth (merelyreading) Jean's right. We alternate - September's choice is The Tenant of Wildfell Hall which is pre-1900. October is the turn of a post 1900 novel. November we will be back to pre 1900 and so on etc.

And don't forget to check the lists of what we have already read before nominating your chosen books.

message 32: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth (merelyreading) I have just removed the group rules box, so it will only be visible to new members to the group.

You all know what you can and can't do on here. Any authors self-promoting will find their posts deleted, but are welcome to contribute to general discussions on here.

T4bsF (Call me Flo) (time4bedsaidflorence) That's great - thank you Elizabeth.

message 34: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth (merelyreading) We are extending the dates for the Read Along books, so that they are now quarterly.

From January 2014, all books will be scheduled by the quarter of the year, so January to March, April to June, July to September, and October to December.

There will be a maximum of four books per quarter which, along with the monthly group reads and various challenges which will be announced in January, should give everyone plenty of reading choice.

message 35: by Bionic Jean (new)

Bionic Jean (bionicjean) Elizabeth - that's great about removing the rules box!

And also about the readalongs. This has helped me already as I wasn't sure how I was going to fit all my reading in through October. :)

message 36: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth (merelyreading) We will be opening the group read nominations threads Sunday evening/Monday morning. Have a good think about what you would like to nominate to read in November. One fiction, one non-fiction and one classic book choice per person. They must be seconded by someone else to make it to the poll.

The books which came second in the poll last month are resubmitted automatically so no need to nominate those.

message 37: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth (merelyreading) We've had a tidy up of the group read threads. All old discussions have been moved to the Group Read Archive folder which can be found at the bottom of the discussions list.

We plan to delete old discussions after six months, so if there is anything you want to save, you'll need to copy them over to your own records.

Any questions, please post them on Ask The Moderators.
