For Tien:

I can't believe you haven't read Jasper Jones yet. I'm pretty sure you're the one who turned me on to it, and I really loved it. So that's my first choice for you.

Other choices:
Supernova, because I'd never heard of it and it sounds wonderful.
World Without End, theme choice, and also on my TBR.
And is it reasonable to choose A Suitable Boy, since we've both started on it?
If not, I'd choose Reconstructing Amelia, because I'm considering adding it to my TBR and am interested in your take on it.

For Fairlee:

I trust you meant this shelf: https://www.goodreads.com/review/list...

If so,I see we share a common enjoyment of mysteries>
Theme choice: the next Stephanie Plum you haven't read yet. I think it's Three to Get Deadly
Also,
Whose Body and Cover Her Face because they're classics, and both among my all-time favorite authors.
And Kiss the Girls for something more contemporary.

For Amy:

You have several of my recent 4-star and 5-star reads on this list, so that made my choice for you easy.
The Prisoner of Heaven, theme choice. I assume you've read the first two already.
The Windup Girl, amazing!!!
A Game of Thrones, 4 stars for me.
Snow Crash, which I haven't read yet, but since it's Stephenson, I'm expecting it to be great.

It looks like most of my choices for you are pretty long. Good thing we have till the end of August to finish them.

Thanks, Susan. I have The Windup Girl downloaded on audio from the library, so I will definitely read that as soon as the game begins.

I also have The Orphan Master's Son downloaded, so if you elect to read it we can compare notes.

Vi hasn't checked in yet and hasn't actually nominated her shelf so I may just leave this off my summary until she's confirmed her shelf, Fairlee. Thanks for the picks (I assume you just looked at her to-read shelf?) :)

message 20: by Vi (new)

Vi I haven't organized my shelf yet so I'm afraid all fo you are stuck with my rather large to-read shelf. For the theme, you can just use my next-in-series.

I'll be back with your picks later today :)

Thanks for checking in, Vi!

For Vi:
1. The Two Towers -theme

3. A Spear of Summer Grass -am considering this one
4. The Winter Sea -enjoyed this book

message 22: by Tien (new)

Tien (tiensblurb) | 9032 comments Mod
@Fairlee: you'll need to pick a different theme book for Vi as Dune was not on her "next in series" shelf
plus another book as you've only picked 2. Thanks :)

message 23: by Vi (new)

Vi Fairlee

1. Death Swatch - Theme
2. Naked in Death - You've got to read this. One of my favorite series out there
3. Rum & Razors
4. The Surgeon - I've wanted to try this series too. Let me know how it was if you do read it :)

Susan:

1. A Monstrous Regiment of Women - Theme
2. Memoirs of a Teenage Amnesiac - Looks interesting
3. Good Omens: The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch - This was an ok book for me but everybody raves about this book.
4. Alias Grace

Amy:

1. Dead Ever After - You must read the much-hyped finale of the series
2. Inferno
3. The Orphan Master's Son
4. Spilled Blood

Tien:

1. Changeless - Theme Book (You must continue this series)
2. Devil's Corner
3. Wool Omnibus (Silo, #1) - It's on my TBR too.
4. The Husband's Secret - Since you have so many of the author's books, you should get atleast one off.

message 26: by Vi (new)

Vi Thanks, Tien! Since this is the second time you've recommended The Book Thief, I'll try to get to it atleast this month. I'm still on the fence regarding the LoTR - I didn't enjoy the first book that much. *ducks*

Is it, really? oops! but it's a fantastic book (not just according to me) and they are making a movie of it! *excitement*
Btw, I'm not a big fan of LoTR either :) but I did read them all. I skimmed through all the descriptive mountains etc.

Amy wrote: "Noticed that The Surgeon was picked twice for Fairlee."

Actually, there are a few double ups:
Monstrous Regiment & Alias Grace for Susan.
Changeless for me.
A Game of Thrones for Amy.

I left them out of my summary listing... I'm good with the selection I already have. How about you, Susan? Did you want Vi to re-pick a couple of books for you? Amy, would you like Fairlee for re-pick a book for you?

I have it on hand but I'm not sure why I'm hesitating to start it.

LOTR: Really? That's really good to hear. All I've been hearing is how awesome LOTR is. I couldn't wait to finish the first book. I found parts of it really boring.

Hubby, a NON-Reader*, loved it! I have to confess that I finished it to prove to myself that I could, lol, and I read it prior the first movie being released so that probably motivates me more.

*he read it b4 we were married and I think I've only seen him finished reading 1 book since and it's nearly 8 years now. He proposed the other day though that he'll take up reading (at least 3 books) if I take up cycling. Hhhmmmm... thinking about it...

For Vi:

You're easy to pick for, Vi. I found four 5-star books on your to-read shelf.

The Blind Assassin
By the way, if you choose this, The Verge is doing a read of this this month that you might want to join in on. Check it out at: https://www.goodreads.com/group/show/...

A Shadow of the Wind
A Thousand Splendid suns
The Maze Runner: (not on your "next" shelf, but it is in a series, so I think it counts for the theme book.)
If that isn't ok, then use Deadline as the theme book instead

message 38: by Vi (new)

Vi Thanks for the picks everyone! I'm having a hard time deciding on the books.

Susan - I've wanted to try Margaret Atwood for so long. I'll try to get to the The Blind Assassin this time. I also have The Shadow of the Wind from the library set to start soon.

Great minds think alike, Susan. I just picked these for Vi:

For Vi:
1. Theme book: Deadline
2. A Thousand Splendid Suns
3. An Abundance of Katherines
4. Water for Elephants

Oops. Maybe The Maze Runner can count for my theme choice, so then there would be only one overlap.

With so many people in our group, we're all getting plenty of choices, so the overlap is probably not a problem -- if Vi agrees.

message 41: by Vi (new)

Me too, though I have Legend (which is luckily on the adventure shelf) and have requested A Monstrous Regiment ... so they'll be on hand when I'm ready. Not sure what 3rd book I'll choose for this.

ooh, I hope you like Legend! Can't wait for Champion (book 3) :D

I have all books on hand so... just will have to see what I feel like after I demolish ASB - I keep thinking about how many pages I have left (as in, ooh, less than 1,000 to go...) lol

I like the True Blood series better than the books, so I'm not disappointed that the books have come to an end. They do more with the supporting characters on HBO which makes them more interesting. I hope they keep the TV series going.

Finally got a chance to read one. My first was Legend. I didn't enjoy it as much as I expected -- too much hype, I guess, and there are so many other excellent books out there that are very similar. I gave it 3 stars.
