Kelly (xitomatl) Hi She-Geekers! Thanks to our poll (and again, thanks to all who voted), we will be doing a theme month, alternating with an open month for the foreseeable future. We wanted to give you guys all a sneak preview for what's coming up for the next year in regards to the themes we've picked:

August - Superheroes & Superheroines
September - Open
October - Horror
November - Open
December - Cyberpunk
January 2014 - Open
February 2014 - Zombies
March 2014 - Open
April 2014 - Mythology
May 2014 - Open
June 2014 - Dystopian

If you have recommendations for any of these months, please hold on until the official thread for that month opens up.

If you have recommendations for upcoming themes, please feel free to post them here.

Deborah | 10 comments Hurrah, Zombies!
My suggestions for February 2014 are:

Manga: "High School of the Dead"--so bad its good also has plenty of over-executed fan service for those that are into that. "Zombie Powder" looked interesting even if it has only 4 Vol.
Graphic Novel: "The Walking Dead"--HUGE FAN--so I can't suggest any others :) T
Novel: "Zombies vs. Unicorns", ed. Holly Black or King's novel "Cell".

For the gamers out there, the Last of Us is an excellent PS3 Zombie game. Also, The Walking Dead by Telltale for PC/PS3 is worth a play. Both suggested by my He-Geek son.

Shannon (frejafolkvangar) | 107 comments Oooooo! Mythology! I shall have to narrow down my many suggestions. Mythology Major, awaaaaay! *flies off*

Please hold your suggestions until we start calling for them for that month, otherwise they'll definitely get forgotten. We'll call for February recommendations in January.

We're primarily looking for general ideas for themes in this thread.

Anna (Bananas) | 757 comments Don't forget fairy tales. :)

I'm so excited for the mythology month! If only it weren't so far away.

message 7: by Kelly (new)

Kelly (xitomatl) I'm thinking we could almost make fairy tales it's own theme. It's definitely distinct enough, yes?

message 8: by Erin (new)

Erin | 44 comments Fairy tales could absolutely be on its own. What about classic sci fi/fantasy? Books that are probably more than 20 years old, the ones that are on all the "must read" lists that not everyone has gotten around to?

message 9: by Anna (Bananas) (new)

Anna (Bananas) | 757 comments Definitely it's own theme.

And I like Erin's idea. ^

message 10: by Natalie (new)

Natalie Are you pretty much going to stick to genres for themes? I know earlier this year we had released in 2012 (Jan 2013) and romance (Feb 2013).

As for genre there's a fairly large pool to draw from. Some I can think of that I have not seen mentioned are steampunk, epic fantasy, urban fantasy, paranormal, time travel, vampires, angels, aliens, alternate history, dragons, witches, medieval, and space travel.

You could also limit it to female authors only or age ranges like children, middle grade, YA, adult.

message 11: by Kelly (new)

Kelly (xitomatl) Nope - if you want to suggest a decade (or whatever) Natalie, feel free!

If you want to narrow down your suggestions (we're already well into next year at this point), we can definitely take a look at them.

message 12: by Anna (Bananas) (new)

Anna (Bananas) | 757 comments I like the theme of female authors and also alternate history.

message 13: by Ma'Belle (new)

Ma'Belle (linguisticness) | 54 comments I also like the theme of female authors!

As for a decade suggestion, I would be excited to do an 1890s theme (soooooooo many interesting things happened in that decade! most of what I've come across has been from nonfictional history sources, but it's a perfect setting for fiction).

message 14: by Amy (new)

Amy (amykate28) | 39 comments I love the idea of female authors!

Also steampunk is a great idea although mostly because I've yet to find a steampunk story I love.

message 15: by Barbara (new)

Barbara Tarn (barbaragtarn) Another group I'm part of also has something like this... You picked zombies for Valentines month, they have "rogues and assassins" - not very romantic either, right? Anyway, if you want to add that to the list, I think there's plenty of those both in fantasy, sci-fi, manga, comics and whatnot. Or it could be just "Outsiders" - the protagonist not being your normal guy/gal, if you understand what I'm saying... We could include "classic" rogues like Zorro and Robin Hood retellings! ;)

message 16: by Waffles - (new)

Waffles - Kelsey (waffles_library) I love that this month we are doing Zombies!!!!! I love reading Zombie books. My suggestions are:
Patient Zero by Jonathan Maberry series
World War Z by Max Brooks (My favorite Zombie book)
Pride and Prejudice and Zombies by Seth Graham-Smith
Married with Zombies by Jesse Petersen

Good idea! I like Rogues as a theme.

Hi Laine, please make sure to post these in the nominations thread also.

message 19: by Anna (Bananas) (new)

Anna (Bananas) | 757 comments Everyone, please post more theme ideas here. What I'd like to do going forward is have our regular no-theme books and then have one extra selection (which can be a comic, manga, or novel) for a THEMED 4th monthly group read.
That way we can have our cake and eat it too, theme-vs-no-theme-wise.
It also means we can have 12 themes per year!

Recent suggestions:
Fairy tales
Steampunk
Epic fantasy
Urban fantasy
Paranormal
Time travel
Vampires
Angels
Aliens
Alternate history
Dragons
Witches
Medieval
Space Travel
Female Authors
Young Adult
Outsiders and Rogues

***I'll give the group a chance to offer up more themes and then I'll create a poll for picking the 12 most popular themes to use for the next year.

message 22: by Anna (Bananas) (new)

Anna (Bananas) | 757 comments Alright everyone, the poll is up now and will be open through Sept 25th. Please go vote for your favorite theme.
The 12 most popular themes will be used monthly throughout the next year. These will be our extra themed reads to go along with our normal 3 monthly reads.
