Looking to find people to read along with your next book pick? Just finished a great book that you think others should check out?

Vote for it on the group listopia!.

The list will likely change a lot, so even if you don't have something new to add, be sure to check it out and vote for the books you're interested in!

If people agree to read something from the list I'll remove it, and set up a new discussion section/add it to the group bookshelf.

quick question: i have a lot of books i am waiting for an excuse (or company) to read them, but i can't list them without being overwhelming.
i've seen book groups make lists (you know the voting listopia thingies) so they could very easily see what a lot of people wanted to read?

i'm not sure how useful they are, but could be a good way out?
PS: if a few people like it, i'd be happy to start one

That's a great idea Hanne! Go for it. I'll add my top picks to it when I get a chance.

Hopefully others will follow suit.

I ended up doing it myself. I had to look something up on the computer for work and used this as an excuse. ^_^

I only added 1 book so far, but I'll go back sometime later/after work to add more.

I have been putting a few books off, simply because I think I will love reading them and want to, you know, draw it out? Save the pleasure of reading them until a time when I really need an excellent book.

These books are:

Divergent
Insurgent
The Fault in Our Stars
Wuthering Heights
Anna Karenina
Water for Elephants
and
Cloud Atlas

I think I will read Divergent and Insurgent closer to when the third book is released (October), though. Waiting sucks, why bother?

I added Leviathan Wakes to the listopia. I thought you were already reading it though. I won't have time to read it myself for a few months.

By all means, add your own books to the list, and/or vote for any existing books you also want to read. I see at least Kat has.

Looks like Steelheart has a lot of interest. Do people want to read it when it comes out (9/24)?

For me that would be mean squeezing it in between Red Seas Under Red Skies and the October S&L pick.

I added a few books from my to-read list. I'll be reading Steelheart anyway when it's released.

I also added a shamelessly high amount of books from my to read list and voted on those that were already there. I like pressing those buttons. :)

I'm probably not going to take every book that has interest and turn it into a group discussion.

I may join in if someone else organizes something.

It's not my goal to have at least one group read each month, it's just been working out that way.

Yeah I just went ahead and set it for release day. We'll see how that works out. Worse case people just join in late.

rob, i think no-one expects you to read everything :)
but the list might just identify a 2 or more people who want to read the same book so they can align amongst themselves.

Well, I didn't mean read. I meant organize. I'll create a new section/add it to the shelf, but someone should volunteer to be discussion leader, picking the read date, creating the threads, etc.

i guess there are two different things
1) there are the books a lot of people voted on (tigana eg) which probably would be better after finishing first law??

2) then there are a lot of books with 2-4 people interested which could be scheduled whenever. there are a few books i really want to read this year so now i know who else wants to read it and i can connect to them when i feel like the time has come :)

I read Tigana last year after I joined S&L but if its chosen, I will gladly read that beauty again. I just don't wanna vote for something I already read.

Oh and after First Law, several of us are doing Gentleman Bastards. So maybe after that (i.e. after October).

The Lies of Locke Lamora is on my list of things to read so I may have to participate in that particular group read.

David and I also thought about starting some of the debut authors from our list at the beginning of November, after finishing Gentlemen Bastards.

As Anthony Ryan's Blood Song seems to be very popular for the debut authors, I could see us starting with him in November.

December could be Tigana or something short like The Black Company, due to the holidays, people spending time at home building snow men (or having beach parties on the other half of the globe) with their families.

January seems opportunistic for The Way of Kings with the sequel being scheduled for a February release.

That would be like one book per month which would leave a second slot for people who aren't that interested in the picks.

But that's just some spitballing from looking at the list and keeping some release dates/holidays in mind.

I for one won't be waiting to read Words of Radiance, I'm sure some others who have already read WoK will be the same, but tentative date is late January, so maybe you could do it late December/early January if you guys want to jump into the Words discussion.

Or maybe the release will slip again. I'm honestly not sure where that date comes from, there is no official release date last I knew.

@Mpauli - I've already read Tigana and Black Company but I'm up for Blood Song in November for sure. I was actually hoping to read Way of Kings before then - but it's just as likely that it won't be till early next year before I get to it.

after another brilliant erikson, i need some lighter fantasy. and YA fantasy might be exactly what i need. i have divergent- insurgent lined up which sounds pretty good.

i saw on listopia there were some others who wanted to read it (Kat, Tammy and Jenny), are any of you up to for reading it in the coming few weeks?

Sorry Hanne, I don't think I can. I wanna finish Memories of Ice, Before They Are Hanged and Consider Phlebas before I pick another book up.

I'll probably get to them somewhere around early September, possibly late August? Unless any of the others will join you I suggest you read The Night Circus! I think it can pass for a light read, or a semilight at least. :)

I'd love to read Divergent but unfortunately I don't think I'll get my hands on a copy soon. I'm 6th on hold for the hard copy, and for the ebook... I'm 148th on hold?!?!? Wow. Wow.

In other news, I would love to read Tigana, The Black Company, & especially The Way of Kings! I loved Warbreaker. Oh man.

Words of Radiance has been pushed back to March, so you guys have a decent amount of time to read The Way of Kings.

I read the kindle sample of Divergent and didn't care for it. Maybe such a small sampling doesn't do it justice?

I think the series is very much YA and its cross-over potential a lot more limited than say Harry Potter or the Hunger Games.
I still quite liked book 1, but i didn't like book 2 all that much anymore.

The Way of Kings is the most popular book on our listopia, so I guess it would be a good group read.
As we're reading Abercrombie untill mid september, scheduled The Republic of Thieves for October and already talked about Blood Song for November, there seem to be 3 possible outcomes:

1) Read it in December to read it at early as possible.
2) Read it in February to directly jump into the sequel.
3) Doing a doble book month either in October or November.

It's a long book to do a double on though... Could read it over more than a month. If I have time, I might re-read it with the group. That book was *so* good.

I am rereading it right now. I had only read it once, and have forgotten a lot of the details. Totally have fallen in love again!! So sad Words of Radiance got pushed back.

It's been a while since I was able to check in with you all. Was the decision ever made to read Blood Song? I read it a few months back but am thinking of reading it again,

If we decide to read it here in the coming months then ill standby to then.

Nothing decided yet. It'll be added to the bookshelf if/when we to read it.

I've been wanting to read Blood Song for a while so I'll probably join in if anyone wants to read it here

I do. But not till November or December. I really don't want to keep up the pace of the last few months.

Just started Blood Song earlier today and it is very good. 21% done so far and having a hard time putting it down.

Would it make sense to create a discussion for it and people could join in at their leisure instead of doing a formal group read?

There is also a group called Fantasy Book Club starting a group read on 9/1.

So it's almost October now and we're getting close to our last scheduled book. Things seem to be losing steam a little.

I've been waiting to see if someone else would step up and organize another book pick, but it hasn't happened so far.

So I figure I'd get the ball rolling and see if there is interest in scheduling something for late October or Early November.

Right now our top 5 on the list are:

1. The Way of Kings (17 votes)
2. Words of Radiance (14 votes)
3. The Black Company (13 votes)
4. Blood Song (13 votes)
5. Tigana (13 votes)

Personally I want to read Tigana the most because I already have it on audiobook and have been meaning to get to it for awhile.

I'd love to see a The Way of Kings read in the group, but someone else should lead that. I'll likely jump in with comments, but I read that only a few months ago.

Words of Radiance has been pushed back to March, and I plan to read/discuss it when it comes out no matter what. Hopefully the group does WoK before then though.

When we last discussed The Black Company, I think the thought was to wait until the Malazan Fallen group finished their read, but that won't be until May of next year.

I'd rather wait for Blood Song to come out in paperback since I don't really do ebooks for the most part and hardcovers are usually so bulky.

The next two on the list are Consider Phlebas and The Black Prism. I'd be up for doing either of those as well.

Thoughts?

i would love to read tigana personally. but not in the coming three weeks. it looks like i'm over-extending myself again. though i should be used to that by now :)

Beware, useless post incoming: As I own all of the mentioned books and have read none of them, I would be up for any one of them.

I toyed with the idea of reading Blood Song in November anyway, but I'm a digital reader, so size doesn't matter. The Way of Kings sounds more like a read I would take on right before the sequel is out.
