Hi everyone! This folder is for the buddy read of A Week in Winter by Maeve Binchy. We will begin reading on November 10, 2013. Please join us in the discussion in this thread!

Synopsis:

Stoneybridge is a small town on the west coast of Ireland where all the families know one another. When Chicky Starr decides to take an old, decaying mansion set high on the cliffs overlooking the windswept Atlantic Ocean and turn it into a restful place for a holiday by the sea, everyone thinks she is crazy. Helped by Rigger (a bad boy turned good who is handy around the house) and Orla, her niece (a whiz at business), Chicky is finally ready to welcome the first guests to Stone House’s big warm kitchen, log fires, and understated elegant bedrooms. John, the American movie star, thinks he has arrived incognito; Winnie and Lillian are forced into taking a holiday together; Nicola and Henry, husband and wife, have been shaken by seeing too much death practicing medicine; Anders hates his father’s business, but has a real talent for music; Miss Nell Howe, a retired schoolteacher, criticizes everything and leaves a day early, much to everyone’s relief; the Walls are disappointed to have won this second-prize holiday in a contest where first prize was Paris; and Freda, the librarian, is afraid of her own psychic visions.

Theloraxis I love these kinds of frameworks whether they are in movies or books. I was thinking to start this in december, but I think after reading your review I'll start it on day after tomorrow

Anima Miejska | 1698 comments I still have some books to finish so I will start this read sometime this week.

Anima Miejska | 1698 comments I've started and I'm already in love with the writing style (makes the story very warm and touching) and so far I love Chicky, such a brave and strong person. I keep my fingers crossed for her success with the hotel and I'm looking forward to meeting other characters.

Anima Miejska | 1698 comments I finished yesterday, and I'm delighted with this book. It is such a touching, sentimental and full of warmth story. I loved most of the characters (except Miss Howe, for her I had a lot of sympathy, but that are all "warmer" feelings) and I just adored the idea of the place where you can go and "recharge your emotional batteries", find solutions to your problems or have a fresh start. It was very Irish story and beautifully written in terms of language. A very uplifting story with simple, a little bit naive, but truthful statements of: "seize the day", grab opportunities, be brave and hardworking and you will achieve the success and find happiness.
