Amy Neftzger (neftzger) | 240 comments Sedaris is one of the authors that people keep telling me that I need to read, but I haven't gotten around to reading his work yet. I finally bought one of his books. However it's still in the massive TBR pile waiting for my attention.

Has anyone in this group read his books? Please post your thoughts/ opinions.

Petra I've listened to the audio of When You Are Engulfed in Flames and found it rather humorous. Like most books of essays, some were better than others. In this book, he pondered Life, its characters and some of its absurdities.
The book was a fun read and I'll read more of his books eventually. This one was entertaining.

JC (jmnc) I have listened to on audio:
Me Talk Pretty One Day
When You Are Engulfed in Flames
Naked
Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim
Let's Explore Diabetes with Owls

I like the fact that he reads his own audiobooks and some of the recordings are live readings with an audience. His humor is not for everyone; his family is a common topic, as well as the fact that he's gay. I think the funniest bits are about he and his partner living in France and David's inability to learn french. I have literally laughed out loud while listening to one of his audiobooks and running on the treadmill at the gym.

Ayesha (craniumrinse) | 1 comments I've read Me Talk Pretty One Day. I think that was the only book I've read that made me laugh so hard I couldn't breathe.

There's a hilarious scene where all the french students are standing around complaining in disjointed french about their horrible, terrifying french teacher. So funny

Jennifer I have read most of his books and listened to a couple on audio. I think he is really funny! I saw him last year and he was fabulous!! He really took his time when signing books and talking with his fans.

One of the clerks in my local book store was telling me this. He also said that Sedaris is very funny in person.

Terri Gulyas My mom said he wrote a book that had lots of anecdotes about Madison, WI - anyone know which of his books that might be?

message 8: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer I'm honestly not sure which one it is. He is coming back to Madison this November though!!

I have listened to the audio of Me Talk Pretty One Day. He's really funny. I think I have another one of his books in the TBR pile, I just haven't gotten to it yet. Because as you all can relate, the pile keeps growing.

Jasmine Schwartz (jasmineschwartz) | 76 comments Amy, he's one of may favorites - I would start with Naked Naked by David Sedaris . He's a master at hilarious self-deprecation and somehow manages to steer clear of self indulgence. Enjoy.

Awesome - I'll pick up a copy. Thanks!

Me Talk Pretty One Day is laugh out loud, almost pee your pants hysterical- especially the title story. My husband and I love to read Sedaris to each other on long road trips, and I often have a hard time getting through some of the sentences because he is just so damn funny. Really any one of his books you may pick up will tickle and delight, promise!

Joy (joy85) | 94 comments I bought Me Talk Pretty One Day years ago, upon multiple recommendations, yet I haven't gotten around to it yet. It's on my massive TBR pile on my bookshelf...but I've recently been on a non-fiction kick, so maybe it's about time I finally do read it, especially if you say it's so funny!
