6. That Certain Summer
Or?

Vicki I will read The Girl in Hyacinth Blue. I own that one, so whenever works for you is fine with me.

I liked Gods In Alabama. Hope you do too, when you get to reading it.

Stephanie (ange) | 21 comments That sounds good. lets start in August?

message 4: by Vicki (new)

Vicki Do you want to start August 1, which is next Thursday or at the beginning of the first week, the 4th? Let me know what works best for you. I am flexible with time this month.

message 5: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie (ange) | 21 comments August 4 is good! That will give me a little time to finish up another book I started. I won a book through the giveaways and need to write a review. Feel bad I'm not sure it's the right book for me. Have you ever had to write one for a book you didn't like?

message 6: by Vicki (new)

Vicki Yes, I have. If you really feel like it is a good book for another reader, you could say that and point out the good points for that audience. I also have looked at other reviews to see what the good points might be for other readers if I have a problem finding them.

Let me know if you need more time, if not I will plan on the 4th. Looking forward to it. I have owned this for many years.

Stephanie (ange) | 21 comments Thanks for the input. Good ideas. I'm a book lover. I don't want to crush the author because of my tastes. The 4th is good!

message 8: by Vicki (new)

Vicki I had one that was a mystery, but very heavy in chemistry and chemical engineering and that is not my thing. I liked the mystery aspect but didn't enjoy the other part. I pointed out how knowledgeable he was about the topic and it would be great for that audience. I think I gave it 3 stars, middle of the road, though I didn't love it, I recognized that it was well-written for what it was.

Though I have had others that were poorly written and I felt obligated to mention that, because I would hate to give it a rave review if it honestly needed work. Especially if there were only a few reviews. A book shouldn't have 4.5 stars because no one wants to give a solid critique, but I am still nice and I do always try to say something positive though.

Vicki Let me know if you are ready to get started.

message 10: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie (ange) | 21 comments Yes let's get started. Do you think you can read the first chapter by Wednesday? You let me know what's a good pace for you.

message 11: by Vicki (new)

Vicki Sure. I think the first chapter is about 35 pages in my book. Though its a small book with big margins. I am flexible, because I am off from teaching, so I am fine to work with what is comfortable reading pace for you.

We can check in on Wednesday to discuss the first chapter.

Stephanie (ange) | 21 comments Well Vicki, what do,you think? Have you ever read Girl with a Pearl Earring? It reminds me of that in the overall mood. I have a feeling this is going to be a heavy read. I particularly don't like reading about the horrible things that happened to the Jewish people. Now it's a little late for that I think!!

message 13: by Vicki (new)

Vicki Yes, I read A Girl With A Pearl Earring. I can see some similarities. I think it will have a somber feel to it. I read books about prejudice and racism, but I don't like it. I am a school teacher and I work in a very diverse district. It bothers me to see anyone mistreated for race or religion.

How far have you read? Where do you want to aim for next?

message 14: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie (ange) | 21 comments Lets read through chapter 4. Maybe try for Sunday. Is that too much? I started the next chapter. I can see where we are headed. It's funny I've been reading such softer books, and then I pick this. It's good so far.

Oh you're a school teacher! I'm trying to go back to school and work towards getting my teaching certificate. I am a teachers assistant. ( far from a diverse school) I have the undergrad, not enough to teach yet.

message 15: by Vicki (new)

Vicki I can do that. I will have a good amount of reading time this weekend. I think it is the best to surround a heavier book with some lighter ones. You will need a few soft ones later.

How did that book turn out that you weren't sure about?

I had an undergrad in English and my college offered a full year masters program for education. By the time I figured I wanted to teach it would have taken me two years to do it undergrad or one to do graduate. Didn't make sense. I teach high school English, grades 9 and 12.

message 16: by Vicki (new)

Vicki I think I am going to need to Monday to complete the reading. I am working on some summer curriculum work and it is due Monday for revisions. I worked for 4 hours today and only finished a third of it. So I haven't read today and I don't think I will be able to tomorrow. But I am done on Monday so I can catch up then. I am sorry. I didn't expect to be taking the work home with me.

Stephanie (ange) | 21 comments That's fine. I'm almost through chapter 4. Oh the lazy days of summer being cruelly interrupted by work!
