Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo

The Shadow Fold, a swathe of impenetrable darkness, crawling with monsters that feast on human flesh, is slowly destroying the once-great nation of Ravka.

Alina, a pale, lonely orphan, discovers a unique power that thrusts her into the lavish world of the kingdom’s magical elite—the Grisha. Could she be the key to unravelling the dark fabric of the Shadow Fold and setting Ravka free?

The Darkling, a creature of seductive charm and terrifying power, leader of the Grisha. If Alina is to fulfill her destiny, she must discover how to unlock her gift and face up to her dangerous attraction to him.

But what of Mal, Alina’s childhood best friend? As Alina contemplates her dazzling new future, why can’t she ever quite forget him?

Glorious. Epic. Irresistible. Romance.

I know lots of people loved The Darkling but I loved Mal! The Darkling was a very intriguing character though. It was sweet how Alina held her power back when she was tested so she wouldn't be separated from Mal.

Philip I love this book especially the ending. Look forward to reading the rest of the series. The darkling got on my nerves it felt like the author tried to force a love triangle when their was no need for one because a vast majority of the characters in this book had some kind of depth. Ever since "Shatter Me" it seems like the most recent trend is to create a bad guy we root for the heroine to end up with. I want a ruthless bad guy I just hate and the love relationship if their has to be one let it be already established instead of repeating the same format where we meet the couple and see their first kiss and etc. Sorry to rant just loved every other aspect of this book except for that.

Tracey (addicted_to_reading) i really liked this book. i loved every character in the story, even the one i was suppose to hate. i just ordered the second book and hopefully it holds up to this one

Hannah | 9 comments I loved this book. Been going to order the second one. I absolutely love the Darkling. I would have been like "Yes, lets destroy the world." I hope he turns out to really like Alina. I usually tend to like the bad guy, even if he wants to destroy the world. Like 'The Mortal Instruments' for example, I love Sebastion. So what I mean is I really loved this book. ;)

S Bajwa (devilreader) | 3 comments Started this book last night and halfway through.

OMG!!!!! I LOVE the Darkling!!!!! He is definitely the best thing about this book. For, some bizarre reason, I always like the villain better. So, I LOVE HIM (and the BOOK) a lot!!!
[To me, Mal is just someone keeping Alina from her best self.]

Nathania Ma (nanyahime) Amazingly though I love the Darkling, I am uncertain the author is attempting a love triangle because there is no way at this point for Alina to fall for the Darkling again, not to mention he is ancient and too eager for power to give everything up for a woman.

I love the Darking and Strumhond but I really don't think Alina will end up with either of them. I'm sure she will end up with Mal. She would never forgive The Darkling of everything he has done so far. Mal is having a hard time finding his place but once he does I think him and Aline will be a great couple. I also think there is something special with Mal cause in the second book when he touches Alina there is a shock. Plus his tracking skills are better than anyone else.

Karen’s Library I need to read this one. I've heard so many great things! I'll try to start it in the next few days so I can join in.

Michelle (misah) | 17 comments Loved it! It's great how Leigh Bardugo manages, that the readers like the darkling, although he's dark and evil. Mal bored me a lot...but Alina is a great an Strong character. Considering the love interests, i like the Second book a Lot more. I am defintely not team Mal und very curios, how Leigh manages their relationship in the third Book. Will she convince me of their Love then?

Irena BookDustMagic | 54 comments so I finally finished this book today. it took me a pretty long time to finish it just because I had some concentration problems and couldn't get myself into the story until i got like 38% done. but once I got into it I really enjoyed it.
I can say this is one of the rare books where i find none of characters disturbing. i liked them all.
and I really liked Darkling but I am team Mal and I am sure Alina will end up with him.

Seth | 5 comments I'm really into this series. I think Leigh Bardugo could write 'realistic' present day fiction and be amazing and believe that good, realistic fantastical fiction is much harder - which she pulls off very well. I'm happy to see more, whenever it comes.
