What would like us to read/discuss next?

message 2: by Lara (new)

Lara E Brown (larasaurus) Am I the only one who hasn't read Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy yet? Yes, I know, I'm a terrible person.

That could be a good pick for the book club sometime?

message 3: by Allan (new)

Allan (allana) | 2 comments I have not read it either.

message 4: by Aaron (new)

Aaron (trippdigital) | 170 comments Mod
You're not alone. I saw the movie though. It was...weird.

message 5: by Lara (new)

Lara E Brown (larasaurus) I've heard the movie is weird, but I've never heard a bad word spoken about the book.

Anyway, I know we're doing sci-fi this month, just thought it might be an option if we're struggling to pick sometime.

message 6: by Tatiana (new)

Tatiana (tatianajb) | 2 comments Enders Game would be a good sci fi pick and after reviewing the book you can compare it to the upcoming movie. I'm not sure when the movie comes out, so maybe it would be a better choice closer to the film release. It's also a fast read, unlike his later books in the series.

Another great sci fi option would be On Basilisk Station. Great book and well written battle scenes based on historic battles of the British Navy.

Hitchhikers guide is a much better book than movie. MUCH MUCH better! It's also a good book to have a fun discussion around, not at all serious!

Seeing that red shirts is scifi humour and Hitchiker's is scifi humour (although different, i expect). We should read it yes, but a bit further along the road.

I've been wanting to read Long Earth by Terry Pratchett. Don't know if there's anyone interested. Or Dodger. No need of any discworld knowledge for these two.

message 8: by Ez, The God of Catan (new)

Ez (thevapidwench) | 287 comments Mod
I've read all the Hitchhikers.... but I have opinions, and I don't mind reading them again.

I haven't read any Practchett since... Thief of Time; I used to love the Discworld but started getting a bit disenchanted, but again, I'd be happy to give them another go. Anyone who can write Guards, Guards deserves another chance.

Speaking of funny books:

I'd like to add The Princess Bride to the suggestion list, because it's one of the funniest and wisest (and maybe a little sad)books in my library and I think everyone should read it.

message 9: by Allan (new)

Allan (allana) | 2 comments Seeing as many here write regularly, how about ON WRITING by Stephen King? I've had this one on my shelf for some time now.

Aaron (trippdigital) | 170 comments Mod
I've been hearing a lot of good things about Ready Player One by Ernest Cline. It's another sci-fi book, but it's supposed to be REALLY good.

message 11: by Jonathon (new)

Jonathon Dez-La-Lour (jd2607) Aaron, If you're liking Redshirts then Ready Player One will be right up your alley. It's immensely fun and filled with 80s pop culture references - films, TV, video games and music. I read it for Sword & Laser a while back and loved it - the audiobook is read by Wil Wheaton and is definitely worth checking out

I take my suggestion back and replace it with Margret Atwood, The Handmaid's Tale.

message 13: by Kane (new)

Kane Hey Ladies and Gentlemen,
My pick for next months hangout is Storm Front by Jim Butcher.
Sorry for the delay

message 14: by Ez, The God of Catan (new)

Ez (thevapidwench) | 287 comments Mod
Nice change of pace.

Aaron (trippdigital) | 170 comments Mod
Looking ahead to next month, I think the book should have a Halloween theme (or maybe just general horror).

Let's hear your suggestions! What's the scariest book you've read?

message 16: by Lara (new)

Lara E Brown (larasaurus) Yup, it's my pick (eeeeeeee!) so give me your best suggestions. I don't read horror so I'm struggling.

Day of the Triffids put me off plants for life.

Horns is interesting though. Written by the son of Steven King, and soon to be a film.

We could do a special LiterallyGeeky and actually read some horror stories. Poe and friends.

I haven't read horror in a while, unless you count bad books as horror.

message 20: by Jonathon (new)

Jonathon Dez-La-Lour (jd2607) I vote for some Lovecraft

message 21: by Erica (new)

Erica (pippimarried) | 1 comments I think you should read some Supernatural humor. Christopher Moore is super funny. Practical Demonkeeping is a great place to start with him.

message 22: by Ez, The God of Catan (new)

Ez (thevapidwench) | 287 comments Mod
If we were looking at classics/old fashioned stories then maybe one of the following?

- Susan Hill, Woman in Black
- MR James
- Bram Stoker!

message 23: by Kane (new)

Kane Bram Stoker & Lovecraft get my vote.

message 24: by Lara (new)

Lara E Brown (larasaurus) As much as I like funny books, I definitely want something spooky. It's Hallowe'en!

At the moment, I'm very tempted by The Woman in Black. I think a ghost story would be fun. Though I've always wanted to read some Lovecraft...

message 25: by Kane (new)

Kane I agree, scary pleeeeeeeeease :)

Just a general suggestion for some other time: Werewolves Don't Purr.

Now I'm not suggesting this is going to be "life changing" (though who knows) but ....

"Thor and Leona were a happily married couple from Texas. Well, they were from Texas before the alien raiders captured them and converted Thor into a werewolf. Leona is just a little too feisty to let a little thing like her husband being turned into a monster get in her way. Seeking the help of an international cast, including the resolute Commander Gupta from India, they battle for survival and make the aliens wish they had left Earth alone. Add in lots of coffee, telepathy, star ships, battles, explosions and many, many more werewolves, and you get one fantastic adventure!".

I mean..... how can we not read that?!

message 27: by Ez, The God of Catan (new)

Ez (thevapidwench) | 287 comments Mod
PS I read lots of classy books too. I've read Proust!

...

....

I haven't read Proust.

message 28: by Lara (new)

Lara E Brown (larasaurus) Please. We have to read that!

I still say we read Eternal Pleasure sometime.

message 29: by Ez, The God of Catan (new)

Ez (thevapidwench) | 287 comments Mod
Who wouldn't want to read Eternal Pleasure; apocalyptic dinosaur shapeshifters for the win!

message 30: by Lara (new)

Lara E Brown (larasaurus) This should be enough to convince everyone:

message 33: by Teresa (new)

Teresa (teresatronic) | 6 comments And it's set in Houston where I went to high school? I think I might have to read this Eternal Pleasure book...

message 34: by Ez, The God of Catan (new)

Ez (thevapidwench) | 287 comments Mod
It's ... words fail. You won't regret it.

message 35: by Lara (new)

Lara E Brown (larasaurus) Okay, thinking about the October pick. We're looking for something short... What about I Am Legend? It's only 160 pages, according to Goodreads. I haven't read it, but I've been asking around for good scary books, and it's been suggested a few times.

Has anyone read it? Would it be a good pick for Hallowe'en?

message 36: by Ez, The God of Catan (new)

Ez (thevapidwench) | 287 comments Mod
I've read it. It's good.

Aaron (trippdigital) | 170 comments Mod
I've been doing some research and came across a book called House of Leaves by Mark Z Danielewski. It's apparently one of the scariest books of the last decade. Only problem is that it's about 700 pages.

There's also a horror-satire called John Dies at the End by David Wong that's supposedly very good. It's a more manageable 375 pages.

message 38: by Teresa (new)

Teresa (teresatronic) | 6 comments Yes, John Dies at the End is on my Amazon wishlist. Both movie and book!

message 39: by Lara (new)

Lara E Brown (larasaurus) I've heard very good things about House of Leaves. Shame it's so long.

Oh my god House of Leaves is bloody awesome.

So, so, so good..... And now 'll be finding another five star horror for the bloody All Hallow's Read swap.

Ez (thevapidwench) | 287 comments Mod
I've read the Seance and Horns, and they're good... but I'm really keen to read The Haunting of Hill House.

message 43: by Jonathon (new)

Jonathon Dez-La-Lour (jd2607) I'm a fan of Joe Hill's comics so I'd love an excuse to read one of his novels

message 44: by Lara (new)

Lara E Brown (larasaurus) Okay, I've decided on the Hallowe'en pick... And yes, I know I'll end up on Ez's Dead to Me list, but I'm going with Heart Shaped Box, by Joe Hill.

Heart-Shaped Box

I've been really torn between that and The Haunting of Hill House, and I'll probably want to change my mind again.

No. No, I won't. Maybe. No I won't.

..... Maybe.

message 45: by Lara (new)

Lara E Brown (larasaurus) I won't.

message 46: by Ez, The God of Catan (new)

Ez (thevapidwench) | 287 comments Mod
Well, at least I already have it.

message 47: by Aaron (new)

Aaron (trippdigital) | 170 comments Mod

And don't feel bad Ez. Next month you get to pick.

Ez (thevapidwench) | 287 comments Mod
I don't mind at all.

Yo,

Time to give this thread a bump methinks. What's everyone got waiting in their to-read pile?

message 50: by Aaron (new)

Aaron (trippdigital) | 170 comments Mod
I'm currently halfway through A Feast for Crows. I have the next book in the series waiting.

After that, I'm thinking of giving the Kingkiller Chronicles a go.
