Vincent Lowry (vlowry) Are you reading a Harry Potter book, or are you delving into another fantasy?

Novin I'm going to start Eragon... (actually I've already started it, but I've read a few pages, and my exams are gonna start in 2 days, so I'd better read it in the summer vacations)

message 3: by [deleted user] (new)

I just finished with Brisingr and am about to start Nightstar

At the present, I'm not reading anything.

Did anyone like Brisingr? I'm not a fan of the Inheritance Cycle, but I think Brisingr is the worst book in the series. It seemed to drag so much until it was rushed at the end.

message 5: by Kendall Anne (new)

Kendall Anne (dance4life) | 84 comments yeah, it did drag a LOT. I still liked it though.

Fabehaven's really good, and neither have I.

message 12: by Annalisa (last edited May 15, 2009 11:23AM) (new)

Annalisa (goodreadsannalisa) I read a lot, most of it not young adult or fantasy, but I'm reading Harry Potter with my daughter right now. We'll finish HBP tonight and then start in on DH. I wish she were a little more suspicious of Snape, but where he's my favorite character, she must know he's not entirely evil. When we're done we'll start Fablehaven and then the Percy Jackson series. There are so many great fantasy series out nowadays and children's/young adult books in general. When she gets a little older, I'll get her LOTR. I was an adult when I read it and think a lot of the magic with the hobbits was lost on me. As far as Inheritance goes, I liked Eragon, but the rest of the series has not been at the same level and Brisingr just dragged, which is sad because the material could have been interesting, but it was so bland.

message 13: by [deleted user] (new)

Annalisa, the Percy Jackson series, is an EXCELLENT AWESOME series. You'll want her to read them over and over again, and let her form her own opinions on Luke/Kronos. Don't give ANYTHING away before you start, just tell her that there are 12 major greek gods.

message 14: by Annalisa (new)

Annalisa (goodreadsannalisa) Since I haven't read it, that won't be a problem :).

I havn't read the Percy Jackson books either. I might try though, since everyone seems to like them so much.

Well, I'm reading LotR over now. I've read them way too many times to count - the last time I read them over was in January. I really need to start reading new books, but I don't really feel like it. The last two fantasy books I read recently were Graceling and Eon: Dragoneye Reborn. They didn't really hold my interest.

Yeah, it's AWESOME!

message 17: by Aegine (new)

Aegine | 359 comments Agreed. I'm rereading the fourth one then I'm gonna start the fifth one! I'm SOOO excited!! And I'm reading an anthology about Poe's works and The Death Dealer. It's this serial killer who recreates some of Poe's stories. They're both good so far.

I read them too and they are soooooo good! they are almost as good as Harry Potter! (I still like Harry better :))

message 19: by Lorna (new)

Lorna I'm always reading two books - something knew, and a Harry Potter book! I just keep reading them over and over slowly, when my other book gets exhausting.

I'm reading Servant of the Bones and The Deathly Hallows at the mo'.

Lieran | 3 comments I'm reading A Madness of Angels Or The Resurrection of Matthew Swift at the moment, which is amazing. It isn't YA, but it is the author's first non-YA novel. Do some prowling around on it. I /think/ (without having the book on hand) that the author is Kate Griffin, aka Catherine Webb.

message 24: by Vincent (new)

Vincent Lowry (vlowry) I'm reading Falling Awake right now.

And I just saw a pretty cool new review of the book CC on this site:

They're wonderful movies, but not nearly as good as the books. I don't like the Inhertitance Cycle because it drags and is too similar to the Lord of the Rings - in a bad way.

message 30: by [deleted user] (new)

Well I loved them. :) But we all have our opinions...

Stephanie Skelton (steph_77) | 1 comments I'm reading the Twilight series right now - started them last Saturday and I'm already a third of the way through the fourth book (less than a week!). Surprising - not incredibly well-written, but definitely an engrossing story!

Were you talking to Olivia or to me about the Inheritance Cycle?

message 33: by [deleted user] (new)

Yeah, I can if you want me too, although it'd probably be easier to just google it...haha. :)

message 34: by [deleted user] (new)

Oh, Olivia. Hehe...sorry. :)

If you think the summaries are long and boring, I sure hope you don't feel that way about the books, which sadly many people do :)

I could tell you, if you want...

The Lord of the Rings takes place in Middle Earth, which is a world populated by Elves, Men, Dwarves, and Hobbits, among others. Hobbits are a little people, peaceful, and man-like, though only half the height of a man, Hobbits live in a land called the Shire.

Eleven Smiths in Middle Earth forged rings of power in ancient times, but the Dark Lord Sauron created the One Ring, the most powerful of them all to rule all else. His ring is lost, but comes to a Hobbit by chance and is then passed down to the Hobbit's cousin Frodo. The story tells of the quest of the Fellowship of the Ring - the Hobbits Frodo, Sam, Merry, and Pippin; Legolas the Elf, Gimli the Dwarf, Boromir a man of Gondor, Gandalf a wizard, and a ranger whose true name is Aragorn - to destroy the One Ring by casting it into the fires of Mount Doom.

message 37: by [deleted user] (new)

Wow! That was an awesome short summary! Good job, Pandy! :)

Lol. Yeah. If I love the books, like I love The Lord of the Rings, I could go on and on about them forever, without knowing when to stop.

message 41: by [deleted user] (new)

Haha same here. And I would never get bored either.

message 42: by [deleted user] (new)

What is interesting about the Lord of the Rings is that I tried several times to read the books and just never really got into them...the many characters confused me and I just couldn't wrap my mind around them. Then, I watched the movies and I was intrigued. I decided to try to read the books one more time and found them very enjoyable. This time, I could picture the characters in my head so it made it easier to keep them straight - even with the added bits of the books. I wonder if people will find the Harry Potter series the same way (watch the movies first and then fall in love with the books).

message 43: by [deleted user] (new)

I hate it when you read a book, and then go see the movie, and then you're really dissapointed beause the movie didn't live up to the book. I hate it when that happens!

message 44: by [deleted user] (new)

It almost always happens!

message 45: by Pandy, "It unscrews the other way." (new)

Pandy | 1575 comments Mod
I agree Olivia, but it helps me if a I read about the film a lot before going to see it. I used to be a purist - even some of the changes in the LotR movies used to bother me, but now I understand the changes better and enjoy most adaptations more.

message 46: by [deleted user] (new)

See, now I never read Eragon and I really liked the movie, but everyone who read it said it was horrible

message 47: by [deleted user] (new)

I started reading the book, and it just wasn't very interesting

message 48: by [deleted user] (new)

ok, i might

I've read all the books in the Inheritance Cycle that are out so far, but I don't think they're that good.

Rachel (aka. Kaiserin Sisi) (looney-lovegood) | 246 comments I've read the first two Inheritance books, and have been meaning to read Brisingr ever since it came out. They're not my favorite series, but they're still fun. I'm pretty much reading them for Murtagh's (sp?) character. I get that his character is pretty much doomed, but I still want to find out what happens.

I absolutely loved Percy Jackson and the Olympians! It's fantastic! Luke was my favorite character, and I get in constant debates with my neighbor about his character.

Right now, I'm reading Gone. It's the first part of a series where everyone 15 and older just disappears. Poof. I'm only a few pages in, but apparently the kids start getting powers later on. It's really intersting.
