Any Doctor Who fans out there - what do you think of the new choice?

message 3: by Ellie (new)

Ellie (theelliemo) Love Doctor Who but not familiar with Peter Capaldi's work, so I'm reserving judgement til the first episode :)

message 4: by [deleted user] (new)

I think he's going to be great - though I've only ever seen him in the The Thick of It where he swears magnificently - something he probably won't be doing in Doctor Who!

message 5: by [deleted user] (new)

Just realised that I was calling the Boxalls 1001 list the Boxalls 2001 list - what a cabbage!

message 6: by Ellie (new)

Ellie (theelliemo) A cabbage? Or a king? ;)

message 7: by [deleted user] (new)

Ho Ho! Definitely a cabbage :o)

message 8: by [deleted user] (new)

Just realised I've been misspelling Boxall's as Boxhall's half the time - I need a proof reader!

Oops - I coped you and spelled it wrong in my thread's title - will have to go and change it now ha ha ;)

By the way, I like the title of this thread, one of my fav poems!

message 11: by [deleted user] (new)

mine too -by the way everyone - while I'm confessing to mistakes - heres another one (yes 3 in my first day as a moderator- embarrassed face!) Mason and Dixon is not in the latest edition of Boxall's ( I think I was looking at a list combining all the editions so far)- any objections to reading it anyway and starting properly next month?

None at all - and don't worry, you're doing fine!

message 13: by [deleted user] (new)

Spent a lovely day at the beach today - swam in the sea and made a start on Mason & Dixon . Isn't it great to be having a bit of proper summer in the UK this year.

message 14: by Ellie (new)

Ellie (theelliemo) Sounds lovely; working in an office, I feel like I rarely get to see the weather. It was very pleasant when I walked to the Post Office to collect a parcel - a lightweight waterproof jacket. Aren't I just do British, readying myself for rain when we have nice weather ;)

message 15: by [deleted user] (new)

The worst thing is when we (and I'm terrible for this) finally get some nice weather and immediately start complaining about how hot it is! I'm an office bod too - but am on my hols this week :0)

message 16: by Joy (new)

Joy Stephenson (joyfrankie) | 175 comments Lee - I love swimming in the sea too and this year I've been in almost every day for the last 4 weeks (we live about a mile from the beach).
Have you read Waterlog? It's non-fiction; an account of the author's wild swimming experiences throughout the UK, in rivers, lakes etc as well as the sea.

message 17: by [deleted user] (new)

You are so very lucky Joy, I love my home town - but if I could improve it in any way it would be to pick it up and plonk it down by the sea. I shall check out waterlogged - sounds interesting

message 18: by [deleted user] (new)

I mean waterlog - damn you autocorrect!!!

message 19: by [deleted user] (new)

2nd day back at work after a weeks holiday :o(

message 20: by Hilary (new)

Hilary | 2082 comments Oh Dear, fortunately (or not) I'm retired. Still seem to be just as busy, with just as many commitments, but theoretically I'm a lady of leisure. At least I don't have to sit in an office. Age has its consolations - but not that many!

message 21: by [deleted user] (new)

A lady of leisure - I do like the sound of that . Work's not so bad really - it 's just a bit of a shock to the system .Wanted to stay in bed and read this morning.

message 22: by [deleted user] (new)

It's the weekend!!! Anyone doing anything exciting?

message 23: by Ellie (new)

Ellie (theelliemo) Er, no. I'm doing a late spring-clean in readiness for a Royal Visitation from the Parentage

message 24: by [deleted user] (new)

Oh dear! I've got some serious tidying to do too ! I'll try to get it done tomorrow while it 's rainy.

I'm in the middle of baking a cake to take round to my friends as a house-warming gift, along with some of my jams and jellies to help stock up her cupboards! At work tomorrow, then taking the goodies round my friend's place, then on sunday I'm having a well-deserved rest and going for sunday lunch with another friend and her daughter ;)

Hope everyone has a nice relaxing weekend!

message 26: by [deleted user] (new)

And you LaureI . I envy your cake making skills - last time I tried to make anything like that it went horribly wrong. I was trying to make muffins - instead of 8 separate muffins, I made one giant monster muffin with 8 paper cake cases inside it!

message 27: by Ellie (new)

Ellie (theelliemo) I was liking the idea of a giant muffin til I read the bit about the cake cases!

message 28: by [deleted user] (new)

It wasn't good!

message 29: by Laurel (new)

Laurel | 1486 comments Mod
Next time use cases made of paper sugar and voila! problem solved :)
I have had my fair share of disasters too but I like clarting about in the kitchen too much to give it up and I eventually got better!

message 30: by Hilary (new)

Hilary | 2082 comments I'm having my family (6 adults, 3 children ) for a BBQ on Sunday so please keep your fingers crossed for a spell of dry, warmish weather. I'm not good at the cakes either but I do make great burgers, even if I say so myself.

message 31: by Laurel (new)

Laurel | 1486 comments Mod
Yum, homemade burgers! Fingers and toes crossed for lovely weather - have a nice time!

message 32: by [deleted user] (new)

Sundays going to be dry and sunny - Carol on breakfast said so - have a lovely BBQ Hilary :o)

message 33: by Ellie (new)

Ellie (theelliemo) Hurrah! Spring clean was not as onerous as I expected! So have the rest of the afternoon to chill before meeting friend for drinks this evening

message 34: by [deleted user] (new)

Excellent stuff - have fun!

message 35: by [deleted user] (new)

The suns just come out- so stuff the housework, we're off on our tamden to the pub.

message 36: by [deleted user] (new)

@ Laurel - I meant to ask - what does clarting mean?

message 37: by [deleted user] (new)

Well the sun went back in, it looked like it was going to rain, we hemmed and we hawed and ended up lazing on the sofa watching the athletics (there's something about watching athletics that I find particularly soothing) - did anyone see Usain Bolt wining the 200m - amazing!

message 38: by Hilary (new)

Hilary | 2082 comments I think Laurel is from my neighbourhood because clarting is a word that I also use! Pottering, messing about, fiddling on, you get the general idea I'm sure.

Ha ha yes, I think you and I are from the same region Hilary - did you mention the Cheviots in another thread? Sorry Lee, I forgot that one might not be used everywhere!

message 40: by [deleted user] (new)

I love finding new regional words -my Granny (from Staffordshire) was forever warning us about "chincough" - you could catch this strange disease from all manner of things - sitting too close to the fire, sitting too far away from the fire, walking around in bare feet, going to bed with damp hair, going outside the day after washing your hair etc - we asked her what it meant - and she didn't know - it was just something her mother used to say.
We eventually found out that chincough is an old word from whooping cough.
I was trying to think of some regional words from my neck of the woods - Gloucestershire - all I can think of at the moment is Jasper = wasp and chuckypig = wood louse- can you think of anymore Ellie?

message 41: by Ellie (new)

Ellie (theelliemo) I'm sure Gloucestershire must have lots of phrases like that but can't think of any at the moment - though in the Dorest Dean

message 42: by Ellie (new)

Ellie (theelliemo) Erm, sorry, hit the wrong button, may be slightly under the affluence of incohol.....

Anyway, as I was saying, in the Forest of Dean, they have a whole other language. How bist thow, old butt?

message 43: by [deleted user] (new)

I beg your pardon! :o)

message 44: by [deleted user] (last edited Aug 18, 2013 01:39AM) (new)

Just thought of another one - Daps = Plimsolls

message 45: by Ellie (new)

Ellie (theelliemo) I first came across the word 'daps' when I lived in Wolverhampton. I said it was because, being soft-soled, when you walked, they made a 'dap dap dap dap' sound as you walked :)

message 46: by Ellie (new)

Ellie (theelliemo) Lee, I'm not sure if your 'beg your pardon' comment was aimed specifically at my Forestian or more generally at my tipsy incoherence!! ;)

Anyway, 'how bist thou, ol' butt?' translates as 'how are you, my good friend?'

message 47: by Laurel (new)

Laurel | 1486 comments Mod
The Geordie version of this is 'Alreet Marra!' ;)

It was your Forestian - I'm at home with tipsy incoherence :0)

message 50: by [deleted user] (new)

Well we managed to avoid the lure of the sofa and athletics today and tandemed to the Plough for a pint or two of Exmoor Gaol. Then back home for a bit of a boogie to Adam Ant while I was making tea (lentil curry). How did everyone else's weekend go?
