As a child, what,if any books were available in your home?
In my home we had a built-in bookcase that my dad made. On one shelf were Bobbsey Twins books, and a few adult books such as the Wit and Wisdom of Fulton Sheen, a leather bound book of Marcus Aurelius. There was also a set of William Shakespeare Plays.
As my brothers and I got older, a perfect set of World Book Encyclopedias were added to the shelves. Hands had to washed before handling the books full of knowledge.
Our main source of children's books was always the Brooklyn Public Library and on occasion a few purchases from Scholastic Book Clubs in school.

Michelle | 4 comments We had books everywhere growing up. My dad was a big non-fiction reader, and tended towards history and natural sciences. The Naked Ape was one that I vividly remember looking at on the shelf (and being disappointed by when I finally dared to open it and found it was not at all as salacious as I expected).

We made weekly trips to the library, but I filled my own bookshelves with as many Trixie Belden and Marguerite Henry books as I could get my hands on.

I believe those trips to the library were what opened my mind to the world. Leading a bit of a sheltered life as a child, the library was my eyes and mind to the world. My mom never had a problem with me going the library!

Any readers care to share their thoughts about the library.
