Renee M Has anyone seen this TV series? It was made in the mid-fifties with Leslie Howard's son as Sherlock Holmes.

Bruce I actually really liked it. H Marion Crawford's Watson was the best one up to that time, and IMO still one of the best. I especially liked that the first episode recreated the first chapter from the book.

Ian MacGregger | 2 comments I stumbled across this series via Netflix. Even given the limited production values that were achievable when the series was made, I thought that the cast did a very good job in bringing the characters alive. The portrayal of Holmes is a bit dimensionally limited but, given the shortness of the episodes, probably to be expected. I found the portrayal of Watson to be interesting; certainly part way between the bumbling cloud and the more modern portrayal in the current series Sherlock. All in all, I had a great time watching the series and definitely plan to go back and watch it again.

Renee M I agree. I really liked it. Certainly the writers took huge license with the stories but in many ways kept to the spirit. Oddly, one if my favorite episodes didn't connect in any way to the original stories. It was the "Bluebeard" episode and the villain was just so delightfully evil!

Bruce That one was amazing! The Case of the Perfect Husband. Probably was also great because of Michael Gough in the "Blackbeard" role. Kind of paved the way for some of the darker film and television stories later to come in the 70's-present.

Bruce Also, I like that they did "The Case of the Shoeless Engineer" which was a reworking of the Engineer's Thumb. I think that might be the only version of it apart from a lost silent short film with Eille Norwood.

Renee M Another good one. So glad he didn't lose his thumb!

Bruce I really hope they do the thumb someday. I'd like to see BBC do a Cumberbatch one around that, as it's more of a general short story that doesn't involve actual murder or government threats, not to mention Sherlock solves nothing. I've been thinking they should do more of his cases like that. Obviously, one like the Yellow Face wouldn't work though.
