What's your favorite music?

Do you listen to music while you read? If so, is it different music than you listen to at other times?

I like all kinds of music as long as it has a fast beat, but I mostly listen to various forms of rock (classic rock, alternative, punk, ska, zydeco, reggae, etc).

I used to listen to music when I read but nowadays I prefer quiet. When I do listen, I now prefer nonvocal music so have been listening to classical - mostly Mozart, Hayden, Prokofiev, and such.

I confess I don't listen to a lot of music. Since I discovered audiobooks also times usually devoted to songs -i.e. Car moovings, ironing, etc... - are now devoted to books!
When I listen to music I like classic music, mainly "camera music" as Hyden or Mozart quartets. Or what in Italy we call "musica d'autore" author music, meaning singers who write their own music and texts. Usually words there are as important as rythm and music, sone of them are now considered poets, like Fabrizio de Andrè. I'll talk about him when my turn on monday poem comes!!!
But he's not the only one:Francesco Guccini, who loves literature a lot and has some songs about great books - Don Quixote or Cyrano de Bergerac, Roberto Vecchioni, Giorgio Gaber, ...

I would usually listen to music while I read but I haven't done so for a while. I've been obsessed with Lana Del Rey lately and have been listening to her album a lot.

I mainly listen to rock and metal music, but I listen to other things too (Lana Del Rey, Metric and Lights being my guilty pleasures!). I like loads of bands, such as Slipknot, Murderdolls, Halestorm, Motley Crue, Five Finger Death Punch, Hollywood Undead, Shinedown, Sixx: A.M, Yashin, Papa Roach, Linkin Park, Black Stone Cherry, Slayer, Steel Panther, Alkaline Trio, The Used, Iron Maiden and loads more.

I sometimes listen to music when I read but never metal. I usually listen to Lights 'Siberia Acoustic' album if I listen to anything because it's relaxing.

I can't listen to music when I read, I find it far too distracting. I do listen to it sometimes when I write, but only classic, otherwise words get jumbled up in my head.

In world music listen to loads of Classical, Celtic folk, Jazz and pop. My favourite groups/artist: Celtic Women, Corrs, Bond, Beatles, ABBA, Blues, Adele, Brahms, Mozart... :)

Mainly while reading, like to listen to soft classical/instrumental music.

Also listen to Indian music (film music and classical music) Our film music includes Bollywood (Hindi films) and regional film music.

I like lots of different kinds. Whenever I visit somewhere I love sampling the regional music. I love jazz and blues. Ella Fitzgerald and Dinah Washington are my favorites. Can only listen to instrumental whilst reading.

I listen to a bunch of different songs like "The Heart of Everything" by Within Temptation, "A Demon's Fate" by Within Temptation, "Only Time will Tell" by Nelson, "Burning Heart" by Survivor, and Robin Spielberg's "Remembering You." "How Can I Live Without You" by Ill Nino, "Moon Trance" by Lindsey Sterling, "Angel of Darkness" by Alex C featuring Yasmin K and more. I got like 800 songs on my mp3 player so can't list them all. They are all good ones though. "Go the Distance" by Michael Bolton and "I'll be" by Reba Mcentire are good too. ^_^

Sounds like instrumentals are popular background music for reading. I'm the same- it has to be classical. Some of my favorite composers are Saint-Saëns, Khachaturian and Handel, but I also like Celtic, Bhangra, and Pipes and drums. I could die happy listening to bagpipes playing.

Actually I prefer classic music and sometimes those who have melancholy ryhme!But generally speaking music is the nutrition of mind and soul , and we should find out what kind of music will match with our moods :)

Some times I play mouth organ , but I'm not professional :D

I don't have spotify but most of the songs I listed can be found on youtube.

I find it really difficult to pick my favourite 'type' of music as I just love so much!

I work in a music organisation and we tend to take it in turns to put music on on Spotify so I tend to listen to a pretty eclectic mix, but I love it because it means that I'm always discovering new artists - some of the artists/composers I'm listening to a lot at the moment are Laura Marling, the Staves, Max Richter, Janelle Monae, Yann Tiersen and Bastille. I did a music degree at university, and the concert halls I work for produce a classical season so I listen to a lot of classical composers too.

Billy Joel was the music of my college days. I think I still have some of his records (yes, I still have records and a turntable!).

Pretty cool Leslie. ^_^ I'm a 90's kid so I grew up with cassettes and cd's and now they have mp3 players. I was born in 1987 so I've been getting into 80's music too.

I, like many others here find it hard to concentrate on my books when music is playing (get distracted very easily) but I love music!

Anything indie and alternative. Folky stuff. Also really into Katy Perry's new one with Juicy J :) haha

I went and saw Laura Marling last night and she was amazing - it was just her on a massive stage with no other people, and you could have heard a pin drop the audience were so wrapped up in it. Her guitar skills are ridiculously good as well, which I don't think I'd really appreciated from her recordings - it's really making me want to learn the guitar now!

Poornima - I like your choices! When I'm not listening to not classical I like folk/rock/pop - Corrs, Clannad, Enya, Maire Brennan. But also, Cindi Lauper, Tori Amos, Indigo Girls, Cranberries...blues John Mayall, Eric Clapton, some rock...some World...All depends on the mood!

Jean, so very true :) music to suite the mood ... and at times, to get the mood to suite the music too!

I'm also a fan of backstreet boys and nsync cuz I grew up listening to them in the 90's and I enjoy their music. Was a spice girls fan too.

Ah - brain child of Karl Jenkins, a classical composer but has a "World music" feel. No words, but sounds like words by a female vocalist, lots of multilayered tracking. Difficult to decribe!! Can be classed as both light classical/pop.

I listen to pianist Robin Spielberg while I read or write too. Her music is beautiful. The only cd of hers I have though is In the arms of the wind which I bought from her at a free concert I went to a few years ago when I was in the 8th grade in middle school and met her there. My favourite bands are Coldplay and OneRepublic. I don't listen to music while reading or studying, I'm not a multi-tasker. I like to do one thing at a time.

I noticed that many, if not most, of us don't listen to music when reading. So when do you listen to it?

I used to listen in the car, but even before I got interested in audiobooks I had switched to listening to news and quiz/humor shows on NPR (like "Wait Wait Don't Tell Me"). So now, I mostly listen while working on the computer.

Same here! NOw with audiobooks I really never listen to music!!!! Probably I should reconsider my habits!!!

I listen to music I got on my mp3 player. I have about 800 + songs on it. I listen to cds I got too sometimes. Otherwise, I either listen to mix 9 2.9 or 96.3 jack fm when I am in the car for music ( they are our local music stations from nashville, tn). I listen to online radio shows on blogtalkradio though mostly horror and they are: Charred Remains, The Flow ( hosted at http://www.blogtalkrafio.com/the-phan...), The Xxx's, HorrorFi (http://www.blogtalkradio.com/horrorsnark) and hump day movie reviews. I also listen to the body count podcast nasville and body count nola at http://www.bodycountpodcast.com . They are all pretty good shows I listen to. Whenever I listen to audiobook cds,it is when my mom listens to the ones she borrow from the library.

I mainly listen to music in the car, or whilst doing housework, washing up, making dinner, etc.

I love rock, metal, grunge, classical, techno, a little country and love songs from the 50's right up to modern tunes.
