Christy Stewart (christyleighstewart) Most people believe that voting for a 3rd party is throwing away your vote. They also believe that we have had the Republican and Democratic parties since the beginning of time. The former opinion is just that, an opinion. The latter is out right false. We haven't always had these two parties and if you interpret the trends the way I pray are true, you'll see we wont be having them for that much longer either.

It wasn't too long ago that the debate between who should be the Democratic nominee, Obama or Clinton, had people saying the party would split. Now, due to the complete lack of power the Republican party is suffering, people are saying they will split.

Is this true? God, I hope so. On both ends.

Both parties are so corrupt (not like any party isn't, but still) and are juvenile at best. I believe that if you vote for either party, you are a sheep and are contributing to the break down of democracy.

This last election was monumental, and would have been whether we had our first black president, or first woman vice-president, and I would have normally been on board for either, due to principal, but I decided to throw away my vote on a 3rd party, and I will continue to do so until this "Two Party System" is abolished.

Dan I'm also a big supporter of third parties. I think the best way to get beyond two-party politics is Instant Runoff Voting. This allows more than two candidates to run without creating any sort of "spoiler" effect.

If you haven't heard about it, check it out: http://instantrunoff.com/

Lauren (djinni) The two party system is the base that keeps the control of the US out of one ideology. A one-party system is like a monarchy. There is no true choice with only 1 party.

Christy Stewart (christyleighstewart) The point isn't to have one party but to vote for a 3rd one.

And if you think we aren't under a monarchy now...I would invite you to compare the two parties we have now and determine how much our votes really count.

Besides, the Masons pick our president anyway.

Rindis I've felt for some time that the real problem with the current de facto 2-party system, is I've become convinced that the Democrats and the Republicans have realized they can ignore their constituents. I mean, what are they going to do, leave for the other party? That's perfectly acceptable, as they'll annoy the defectors soon enough, and then they'll be back.

It's kind of a dynamic stable equilibrium.
