Thanks to our Spring challenge and needing suggestions for Aussie sci fi/fantasy/para fiction, I thought a new thread was in order. So for Liam, Lynxie, Nicola and any others who know the answers here, could you please give us the benefit of your knowledge:) Thanks!

I'll start with a couple I've read recently:

Akropolis by Catherine McCallum (also YA)
Treespeaker, Song of the Jikhoshi, Orlando's Gift, The Dragon Box all by Katie W. Stewart (also YA)
Lifeboat by A.B. Shepherd

Liam || Books 'n Beards (madbird) Liam's Awesome-Rad Guide to Australian Fantasy and Sci-Fi! (Copacetic!)

FIONA McINTOSH
She was British but then she moved here and lives between Tazzie and Adelaide. Totally radical!
Royal Exile (Valisar Trilogy Book 1)
Myrren's Gift (The Quickening Book 1)
Betrayal (Trinity Book 1)

SAM BOWRING
He's a stand-up comedian who also writes fantasy novels! Bodacious!
The Legacy Of Lord Regret (Strange Threads Duology Book 1) I love this series.
Prophecy's Ruin (Broken Well Book 1)

MATTHEW REILLY
Australia's premier action-novel writer! A lot of his stuff could probably be classified as sci-fi, but particularly the following! Tubular!!
Contest
Hover Car Racer

JO SPURRIER
Another, new, Adelaide author who's made a promising start with Winter Be My Shield! Outta sight!

SEAN WILLIAMS
Adelaide sci-fi author who has written all sorts of awesome stuff! The following are particularly good though. Hang 10, man!
The Prodigal Sun (Book 1 of Evergence)
The Crooked Letter (Book 1 of The Cataclysm)

TRUDI CANAVAN
Pretty much everything she's written! Dope as!

Nicola | 1161 comments Jennifer Fallon
Greg Egan
Kate Forsyth
Ian Irvine
Catherine Jinks
I haven't read any of these, but when I was working in public libraries they were hugely popular

A favourite of mine is
Sara Douglass

and a new one for me
Isabelle Carmody

Liam || Books 'n Beards (madbird) Michael wrote: "I hear good things about John Flanagan's series Ranger's Apprentice series"

Very popular with the kids/teens at the library.

Leonie (leonierogers) | 3568 comments Janis Hill has a recently published book called Bonnie's Story: A Blonde's Guide to Mathematics which I thoroughly enjoyed.

I'd also second Katie W Stewart's Treespeaker and Song of the Jikoshi.

I also liked Isobelle Carmody's Darksong and Darkfall which is apparently a trilogy, and I'm rather looking forward to book 3.

I'll read almost anything as long as it is well written and imaginative. Sadly the fantasy genre is full of rubbish! And the dystopian and paranormal books are mostly YA. I like Sci Fi too but don't know any good Australian writers. (I have already read Treespeakerand Song of the Jikhoshi.

I read another Aussie author SciFi last night, whom I had forgotten about... Patty Jansen She has quite a number to her name.

message 23: by Katie (new)

Katie Stewart (katiewstewart) | 184 comments I highly recommend anything by Juliet Marillier. She writes a lot of fantasy based on old legends and folk tales. I think you'd especially like Wolfskin. It's a Viking story. My personal favourite was Heart's Blood, based on Beauty and the Beast, but that appealed to the romantic in me! :)

Most of her work is adult. I think only Wildwood Dancing and its sequel are specifically YA.

Thanks Katie...Wolfskin sounds good:)

Liam || Books 'n Beards (madbird) The Legacy Of Lord Regret was fantastic, I really can't recommend it enough. Really unique and interesting, but not to the point where you'll be intimidated or confused if you're not a regular fantasy reader.

message 28: by Lynxie (new)

Lynxie | 715 comments I totally missed this thread... *smacks forehead*
I shall paste here:

Let's not forget the little guys here... the indie authors who are producing some amazing books!

David Estes
Born in the US, David moved to Australia and married his Aussie wife. He's currently travelling around the globe and writing copious amounts of awesome YA/Dystopian/Sci-Fi books and catching up with his fans on Goodreads.
Archangel Evolution (Book 1 of Evolution Series)
The Moon Dwellers (Book 1 of The Dwellers Series)
Fire Country (Book 1 of The Country Saga)

Tahlia Newland
Award winning author Tahlia Newland writes contemporary fantasy and magical realism with a metaphysical twist.

Two of her novels have received the Awesome Indies Seal of Approval for excellence in independent fiction and her young adult magical realism novel ‘You Can’t Shatter Me’ was awarded a B.R.A.G Medallion for an outstanding independent novel in 2013.

A Matter of Perception
Lethal Inheritance
Stalking Shadows as well as a number of others.

Ann Somerville
Ann Somerville grew up in one of Australia’s prettiest small cities. In 1989, she left Australia with a BA and a burning ambition to see more of the world and its people, and to discover this ‘culture’ thing people kept telling her about. In 2006, she returned home to Southeast Queensland with two more degrees (this time in science and IT), an English husband and a staggering case of homesickness, vowing never to leave Australia again.

Unnatural Selection - (Book 1 of her M/M Paranormal romance. They're the only ones I've read of hers, but I enjoyed them).

Georgina Anne Taylor
Hailing from Tassie, her books are a little creepy, gothic and usually fairytales. Great fantasy writing. A couple of her books I've read:

Fairy Tales for Freya
The Taint: Sorrow's Child

Dianne F. Gray
Originally from the capital of Aus, Dianne has recently taken off to sunny QLD and shares her writing, house revamping and run ins with creepy crawlies on her blog. She writes a range of genres her books with paranormal or sci-fi themes include:

Wolf Pear
Soul's Child
The Eleventh Question - mysticism/fantasy twisted with contemporary fiction.
The Everything Theory - listed as sci-fi

Hope this helps some of you with your lists :)

Thanks Katie, this is why I have become an active (rather than lurky) member of Goodreads and Aussie Readers. Never ever ever would have heard of this author, have checked out her page, am going to see if my local library has a copy of her book of short stories, if not I will ask them to order it in. Bless!

You (any author) can only promote their work in the author section BUT if you'd like your books in this thread (and I personally think that's a great idea) please just PM me (or one of the others) and we will add them for you. That way we are keeping to the rules, but your work will be seen in the relevant thread by those of us who wish to read this genre:)

I've found a new Aussie fantasy author who (in my humble opinion) is brilliant!

Rinelle Grey whose book Twin Curse (a stand-alone) I finished this morning - 5s from me! Plus I've also recently read Reckless Rescue and Reckless Rebellion, also both 5s and can't wait for the third in the trilogy Reckless Recon which will be out in a few months:)

I highly recommend these to fantasy lovers:)

Troll Mountain: Episode 1 by Matthew Reilly is out 8th April, with Troll Mountain: Episode 2 and Troll Mountain: Episode 3 following a week apart. I've read the first one and enjoyed it...they're very short, but good IMO.
