When I read Thomas Pynchon, I really hear the exhuberance of Joyce's prose in his writing. His writing is definitely less modular than Joyce's -- he loves those big operatic forms that feel more like Proust - in the way that the text seems to be flowing all from one source. But it's the use of language, the musicality of Pynchon's writing that seems to echo Joyce in a big way for me.
