Sara W (sarawesq) | 2153 comments Hey everyone! Our June 1 - July 1 History group read will be:

When Christ and His Saints Slept

When Christ and His Saints Slept (Eleanor of Aquitane, Book 1) by Sharon Kay Penman

by Sharon Kay Penman

Sharon Kay Penman

We will start the discussion on June 1st.

We'll do the discussion threads broken up by chapters like all the other times, but I figure this thread can be used by those frustrated with amazon's delivery slowness (or your library's slowness) or for any other reason. Just don't discuss the book in any detail here! (General "I'm a couple chapters in and I like it" comments are fine, but we'll start the real discussion threads on the 1st.) For those of you just joining us, you can look through the previous threads in this Monthly Group Read section to see how we did it before because the process will be the same (there's also a thread just like this thread for the other books we've read together).

The Book Whisperer (aka Boof) | 85 comments I can't wait - this will be my first group read with you all. I have just ordered it from Amazon :o)

Sara W (sarawesq) | 2153 comments Ha ha, I ordered books from amazon a couple of days ago, and it seemed like this book might win, so I got it "just in case". Good call!

Yay Boof, I'm glad you'll be reading with us!

Misfit | 696 comments I really really enjoyed this book (well all of Penman's). The Civil War between Stephen and Maude is so complicated and my head always spinned when I tried to read books set in this period until this one. Finally the light bulb went off and I got it.

The Book Whisperer (aka Boof) | 85 comments I'm glad you said that Misfit as I haven't read anything from this period yet so I was hoping that it would be accessable enough for novices. How exciting.

Boof, that is one of Penman's greatest strengths. She can take the most difficult political situations and entertain and educate you at the same time. Great stuff - wait till you finish the trilogy and read Devil's Brood. Although it's not a trilogy anymore as she's writing one more - Lionheart.

The Book Whisperer (aka Boof) | 85 comments My copy arrived today!!!!! :o)

Mandy Moody | 544 comments Can't wait to read this one!
I love Penman :)

The Book Whisperer (aka Boof) | 85 comments This is my first Penman but I sneaked a peak at the first page and had to force myself to put it down 'cos I'm not ready to read it yet.

Just wait until you read the Welsh trilogy. Llewllyn (sp?) is still tops on my hunks in history list - although William Marshal still wins the top spot.

MBP I envy you guys your first reading of this one! This is one of my all-time favorites. I'd like to join in for a re-read if I have time, but I'm not sure if I can fit it in right now. I'm looking forward to seeing the discussion on this.

Mandy Moody | 544 comments Got my book today :)

Leslie (lesslie) Got mine from the library today. Looks like this will a great one.

message 14: by Chrissie (new)

Chrissie Boy, I want to read this! I will call up both Waterstones and Stelings today to see if perhaps they have a copy in the store......

message 15: by Chrissie (new)

Chrissie Yes, Sterlings had one copy. I carried Oscar most of the way since this with collars and leashes, is so new. First metro ride kind ogf spooked him, but yup I have it. I am not finishing Pioneer Women. Fun to take part in a discussion, and I am encouraged by your info that Penman makes things clear and sticks closely to history. Excited.
