Dan La, a note to follow sew.

Almost eight years later. Time to get this party started.

I noticed Ramsey Campbell has a book about to be reprinted starting this September: Born to the Dark. It might be possible to pick up an early copy through NetGalley.

Bill Hsu (billhsu) | 1751 comments I enjoyed the early short stories more than the novels. "Inhabitant of the Lake" and "Cold Print" are definitely worth checking out, And maybe a couple of the mid-70s stories when Campbell left his Lovecraft-isms behind. Some notes:

mark monday (majestic-plural) | 89 comments Just thought I'd add a post since Campbell is one of my favorite authors.

He's an author who I mainly read way back when, in my 20s. A bunch of paperbacks were devoured and they sort of run together in my mind, but the memory of how good those books lives on. I should get around to rereading my favorites, but at this point, I'm not sure specifically which ones were my actual favorites. Ah, memory. Incarnate and The Nameless seem to stick out to me as being particularly good. I think I remember not loving Hungry Moon? Maybe it was due to the ending, per Video_ouja's post. Don't really recall.

Since coming onto Goodreads nearly 15 years ago, I've only read three of his novels, which is a shamefully low number. I thought The Last Revelation Of Gla'aki was enjoyable. I thought The Searching Dead was excellent. And I thought The Overnight was perfect.

I haven't read many of his stories, but of those I've read (all in recent years), I'd say about half of them really impressed me. I loved At Lorn Hall and the stories in the second half of Cold Print were excellent.

In short, Campbell is one of my favorite authors! But one I definitely need to get better reacquainted with. Okay done.

Dan We did as a group just read a Ramsey Campbell novel together: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/....

It was my first Cambell read and from what I understand this novel is atypical. For one thing, Campbell normally never writes series of books. (Unless you consider his Cthulhu Mythos books a series, as ISFDB does. I don't, because characters don't recur and situations don't continue, at least I don't think they do.) This first in a series novel may then actually be something you would prefer to avoid for now.

The thread here reminds me, I promised Flame Tree Press months ago to read the next book in this Campbell series for a free copy they faithfully sent me. Yet I haven't yet. I really must soon.

Dan Wow! The Face That Must Die has a rather unimpressive GR average. Psychokillers. I personally have had my fill reading their perspective in the last year. We read one in this group this year. He took the story over from a psychotic dog of all things! I'm currently "reading" The Snow Was Dirty by audiobook right now. It's noir rather than horror, written from the perspective of a Belgian in the resistance during the Nazi occupation of that country. This 18-year-old Belgian son of a whore who was running a brothel (not the most wholesome environment to mature in) likes to kill and do random harm to others. Talk about grim! It's hard to listen to. I hope your choice is more entertaining.
