A world ruled by media that are no more than extensions of advertising agencies. Figurehead political leaders, dwindling resources, the emergence of the super-rich class. Sounds like today?
But this is the future predicted by Pohl Frederik and C.M. Cornbluth in this 1950s classic.
Of course, The Space Merchants also predicted the colonization of Venus, so it's not all that prescient. But still this is a classic that presents a timely re-read. Maybe someone has a copy on Booknook.
