I've tried and tried, but I'm afraid I rather suck at keeping up with updates (read: others' reviews) as compared to keeping up with discussions in the few groups I belong to.

OK, I'm fairly lame at keeping up with discussions, too. If certain threads are popular, I tend to give up because I'm always 10 miles behind the latest topic.

But the updates... whew! "NE liked this review!" isn't seen half enough, which in turn means that NE's reviews aren't much read (scratch my reviewing back, I'll scratch yours, tends to be the GR creed).

That said, a lot of people appear to "like" without reading. Great topic for philosophy, no? Is that immoral? A joke? OK, as it's so minor? Have you ever done it? I didn't think so....

I tend to save the updates in my email box, fully intending to read them. But I seldom do. I must have 50 zillion of them trailing away over the event horizon.

Carol | 10410 comments I only get updates once a week, and fly though them so fast, I don't know who did what. If you want me to know , you have to send me a comment or e-mail. I do look at recommendations.

Yikes. I don't even use the e-mail function. I just count on the updates tab when I come onto this site. I avoid e-mail notices like the plague, because they overrun your inbox like kudzu. Is it actually worth it?

Also, I never use the recommendations feature.

The updates only come once a week, all in one email.

message 6: by Carol (new)

Carol | 10410 comments I should have said recommendations from friends. I am not a willy nilly person , who friends anyone and eveyone , like the collection plate during the holidays.

Ruth wrote: "The updates only come once a week, all in one email."

The once-a-week technique is good, as it does not flood your inbox, yes. The disadvantage is it increases the number of updates hitting you at once, decreasing the odds you'll bother.

And yet, some posters here seem to make a religion out of writing reviews (extensive ones) and liking other people's reviews. Their endurance is admirable.

Carol,

I refuse to friend Willy Nilly, too. We see alike on that one.

Joanne (bonfiggi) Yesterday I got a friend request from someone who had over 800 friends. I was going to ignore it, then I was going to tell her 800 friends was enough, then I accepted the request. I felt wimpish.

I regret when I accept and then start seeing the new "friend" in my updates. Guess what they're doing? Friending some more, to the tune of five to ten a day. Yep. That's regret, all right.

You can always unfriend someone. They'll never know unless they take roll someday.

message 11: by Carol (new)

Carol | 10410 comments Isn't there a feature where your friends don't have to be bombarded with every aspect of your activities on GR? I think I have mine set, so my friends don't get a lot of stuff. Plus I only get notifications, no e-mails, unless it is intended as an e-mail.

message 12: by Ken, Moderator (new)

Ken | 18714 comments Mod
Yes. I fixed it so you don't get notified of every silly post (and most are silly because it's a few minute's time killer).

message 13: by Susan (new)

Susan How, please HOW, do you only receive updates once a week? I have people on my friends list that I did not friend. Updates from people who read books that I have zero interest in. What is with this "recommendations" feature .... ugh. Internet was off for a few weeks and I returned to chaos!

I think you need to go to EDIT PROFILE and then E-MAIL SETTINGS to determine what GR e-mails to you. The "Top Friends" feature doesn't seem to do much. You still get updates from all friends.

message 15: by Susan (new)

Susan Thanks NE. I went to "edit profile" and made quite a few changes. Is this "Top Friends" thing new? What is it? Friends you choose and those GR chose for you? Or an evil FB thing .... FB does this and not everyone on FB reads ....

message 16: by Ken, Moderator (new)

Ken | 18714 comments Mod
No, it's GR. You click FRIENDS and see the little box to click to make them TOP FRIENDS. I tried it to diminish the updates from friends I've taken on who are just gathering friends upon friends, but it doesn't seem to do much. I still see their updates equally.

IOW, don't bother.

Carol | 10410 comments Do like Ruth said , delete , delete, delete.

message 18: by Susan (new)

Susan Went to FRIENDS and did some housecleaning ... why do these people have "0" books?????? Changed status to be polite, next step - delete.

message 19: by Ken, Moderator (new)

Ken | 18714 comments Mod
Sometimes deletions can be polite.

message 20: by Susan (new)

Susan Guess I will find out! Have not noticed any significant changes as yet.
