This thread is to list books that have lead characters who have served time in jail/prison, are in prison/jail, or are ex-cons or fugitives from justice.

They can be from any subgenre but please specify if erotic.

Unlawful Contact (I-Team, #3) by Pamela Clare has a hero who escaped from prison to help his sister.

Hannah's Vow by Pam Crooks is an excellent HR with a hero who breaks out of jail and kidnaps the heroine who is a novice nun.

message 4: by McGee Magoo (new)

McGee Magoo Worth Any Price (Bow Street Runners, #3) by Lisa Kleypas comes to mind, but it's a historical.

message 5: by McGee Magoo (new)

McGee Magoo I would think some of Kristen Ashley's heroes have got to be ex cons... Knight was a nasty piece of work...

message 6: by PepperP0t (new)

PepperP0t Lady Luck has Ty Walker and is definitely an ex-con

Jackson Rule by Dinah McCall served 15 years.

Veronica-Lynn Pit Bull | 30 comments I love an ex.con hero or criminal hero; I HATE (with a burning, firey passion) the wrongfully imprisoned trope. Does anyone know if that applies to Unlawful Contact?

Here are a couple with ex.cons who earned their sentences:

Ritual Sins by Anne Stuart I believe for manslaughter; killed someone in a bar fight.

A Thin, Dark Line by Emma Elliot Served 15 years for killing his mother's abuser.

Wanted by Amanda Lance Served 11 years I think for stealing; which is where he met his current partner in crime as he was still stealing at the time the story is taking place.

Into the Fire by Anne Stuart I think he went to prison for assaulting and nearly killing a man who tried to rape the heroine.

Veronica-Lynn Pit Bull | 30 comments I just thought of a couple of wrongfully imprisoned ex.cons:

Nightfall by Anne Stuart Out on bail while appealing conviction for murdering wife and children.

Honor Bound by Sandra Brown Forget what it was, but he didn't do it.

Mackenzie's Mountain (Mackenzie Family, #1) by Linda Howard ditto

message 10: by Kim (new)

Kim | 134 comments I can't link to it via my cell, but The Last Victim (and the follow up) by Karen Robards has a convict. It's more of a suspense book with some romance and a paranormal twist. Some sex, but not much and not what I'd consider erotic.

Lady Luck (Colorado Mountain, #3) by Kristen Ashley
About That Night (FBI / US Attorney, #3) by Julie James
Inside (Bulletproof, #1) by Brenda Novak

to name a few

@Jazzy: It's not a wrongly imprisoned scenario in Unlawful Contact, but it's complicated.

message 13: by Fani *loves angst* (last edited Sep 11, 2013 10:56PM) (new)

Fani *loves angst* (fanip) Without saying if the hero was rightly imprisoned/accused, here's my list:
Play Dirty by Sandra Brown : Hero served a couple of years in jail for setting up a football game
Letters to a Secret Lover by Toni Blake : I can't remember if the hero has served in prison (I think he has) or is just on the run for manslaughter
Lethal by Sandra Brown : Hero is on the run, accused of manslaughter
The Viscount's Addiction by Scottie Barrett : light EROTICA. Can't for the life of me remember why the guy's in prison, but the story starts when he gets out. Nice, pretty light erotica with an actual story and a hero suffering from opium addiction.

A Thin, Dark Line by Emma Elliot : +1

Veronica-Lynn Pit Bull | 30 comments @ Lady Danielle - Thank you. I added it to my wish list.

Also on my wish list but not yet read:

Too Good to Be True by Kristan Higgins ex con, reformed bad boy, recently released from prison.

One Summer by Karen Robards - 10 years for murder. My $ is on he's innocent, but I'm going to take the plunge.

Be Careful What You Wish For by Joanna Wylde -Escapes from prison after 5 years for murder; looks like it could go either way. May be mostly erotica?

Every Move She Makes by Beverly Barton - looks like wrongfully imprisoned for murder. Description sound good, tried to get into it and it didn't seem very well written...will try again.

Veronica-Lynn Pit Bull | 30 comments One more from my wish list.

Serious Play by Bonnie Dee - 5 years in prison, involved in armed robbery in which store owner was shot.

Dina (twidi) | 50 comments Perfect (Second Opportunities #2) by Judith McNaught One of the absolute best examples of doing time (wrongfully accused) ;)

I love all the recommendations!

Veronica-Lynn Pit Bull | 30 comments Had to double check but...
Come Midnight by Suzanne Forster - did "hard time on a murder rap at 17" and when the story takes place is on trial for killing his girlfriend - which he didn't. Not sure about the earlier murder conviction - he was gang involved...can't remember.

namericanwordcat | 242 comments The Last Chance Ranch (Silhouette Special Edition, #977) by Ruth Wind Heroine. Love this one.
Morning Glory by LaVyrle Spencer Manslaughter

Night in Eden by Candice Proctor Whispers of Heaven by Candice Proctor Hester Waring's Marriage by Paula Marshall Aussie Convicts

Lady Luck (Colorado Mountain, #3) by Kristen Ashley Really deals with PTSD after Prison nicely

Veronica-Lynn Pit Bull | 30 comments I found another one on my wish list:

A Not-So-Perfect Past by Beth Andrews Hero served time for killing his step father. He was guilty but he killed him to stop him from raping his sister.

LAKristy | 108 comments I'm not sure if this should be included in this list because they aren't technically fugitives, but they are criminals, actively engaged in a major felony who are evading the police -- the police just don't know who they're looking for yet:
Losing Me, Finding You (Triple M, #1) by C.M. Stunich

Western/Historical Fugitive:
The Outlaws Rafe (Outlaw Trilogy, #1) by Connie Mason

Veronica-Lynn Pit Bull | 30 comments To Have and To Hold (Wyckerley Trilogy, #2) by Patricia Gaffney has a heroine who served time. Historical & she was wrongfully accused.

also This Time Forever by Kathleen Eagle hero wrongly sentenced to life in prison.

message 34: by Chickie (new)

Chickie | 5 comments Crazy For Lovin' You: Hero spent 3 years in prison for burglary and attacking an officer. This was the first book I read where the hero was guilty and admitted to it. Opened my eyes to this kind of book.

Alyx Heroine convicted of stealing, I believe. She is sent to a plantation where she and the hero are used as breeders.

Secret Lives Hero is a convicted child molester. (going to go ahead and say, due to the nature, that hero didn't do it).

The Rainbow Season Hero convicted of rape.

Conor's Way Spent time in Prison for being part of the Irish rebellion.

The Wives of Bowie Stone Spent time in jail for murder. Is sentenced to be hanged when the heroine saves him.

Fever. Can't remember a lot besides the hero is a "Lifer" and it was a lot like Unlawful Contact by Pamela Clare.

Traceless Hero spent time in prison for murder. Is out on parole.

Into the Fire Hero is a felon and did time for seriously injuring another man during a fight.

Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) | 9851 comments Mod
I've been wanting to read Fever. My sister read and really liked it. I heard that there was so racial issues, but she signed off on it. I'll have to move it up my list.

I am loving all the recs. Thank you so much.

This theme resonates with me for some reason!

message 36: by Chickie (new)

Chickie | 5 comments Lady Danielle, I can't really remember much of the book, but in the brief review I wrote, I mentioned racial slurs --My words: The racial slurs were a little too much (I can handle their use to make a point, but after a while it just seemed gratuitous)--, so that must have stuck with me at the time. I don't think any of them came from the hero, but another character. I do remember that it felt like I was reading an amateur version of Unlawful by Pamela Clare.

I also love this theme (It's probably my favorite of all). I find a lot of historicals that fit, but it's hard for me to find contemps with this theme that are, IMO, worth reading. Those that I have, I have reread until I can recite them by heart.

Veronica-Lynn Pit Bull | 30 comments I have a bad feeling about this but I just picked it up free: Beautiful Pain by Joanna Mazurkiewicz

It's a new adult about a young girl still in college working a summer job as a probation officer (because apparently there's no special training required) and her love interest is the parolee she's supervising (because there's nothing unethical about that scenario).

He was in prison for drug charges...but I'm betting he took the rap for family.

What can I say...it was free.

message 45: by Danielle The Book Huntress , Loves 'Em Lethal (new)

Wow, that seems weird that a college age person could get a job as a probation officer.

Veronica-Lynn Pit Bull | 30 comments Lady Danielle aka The Book Huntress wrote: "Wow, that seems weird that a college age person could get a job as a probation officer."

It's not sounding very plausible. I wouldn't have picked it up if it weren't free...but I figured technically it does fit the category.

Yeah, sometimes the free books are like rolling the dice.

message 48: by Chickie (last edited Sep 18, 2013 10:45PM) (new)

Chickie | 5 comments *(because apparently there's no special training required)*

I don't know if it varies state to state, but you need more than special training, you need a college degree to be a probation officer in my state. so. . .

Now, a corrections officer I could buy, because I know that you only have be of age, pass a background check, and take a two week training course.

Edit: I stand corrected. This book is not set in the US, but Northern Ireland (Belfast) still requires a degree in social work. Even a trainee has to complete a two year program and be at least twenty years old.

message 49: by Danielle The Book Huntress , Loves 'Em Lethal (new)

Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) | 9851 comments Mod
I would think you need some life experience in order to be someone's probation officer, so they would tend not to hire a very young person, especially a woman (considering she might be working with violent ex-cons).
