whoa! i'm done! i just couldn't stop myself anymore (it's tough when there's just 100 pages to go and you have a sunday evening to yourself)

i really like how this is going. i love that fitz has an apprentice of his own: and none other than burrich. i guess somehow this might sooth things whenever molly and burrich find out fitz is alive.

it's also clear that the voice must be tintaglia, as she is the only blue dragon we know about. did she find out there might be another, and is desperate to have him found?
help me here, but i think i remember that selden was not present when Elliania put down her challenge, so Tintaglia doesn't know that they intend to kill the other dragon burried in ice.

i'm really looking forward to continue reading.

david, wastrel, when you guys are done let me know when you would like to continue book 3 so we can try to find a common date!
(i tentatively had put a month in between, but i would really like to continue sooner if that would suit you guys)

Rob (robzak) | 432 comments I thought the final book of this trilogy was the best of the 9, but you've liked the others more than I did.

Lindsey | 23 comments I thought the last conversation where the Fool explains to Fitz that he's going to die was really sad but full of great character moments. Fitz's reaction (to stop him from going on the trip at all) was very in character; but when is he going to learn that you can't make choices for other people? Something Shrewd knew when he recruited Fitz to begin with, by earning his loyalty through Verity rather than commanding it. Fitz himself even points it out earlier when he's deciding about whether Thick is trainable or useful. Anyway, Fitz "siding" with Chade and trying to stop the Fool from anything is sure to have consequences.

Already started book 3 but haven't made much progress yet (not the fault of the book, busy couple of weeks). Looking forward to the group read!

Wastrel | 270 comments I've not been reading along in real-time - I re-read the book earlier this year. I haven't re-read the final book yet, though, so I'd be happy to start that with you whenever.
Well, maybe not until next week, since I'm reading something else at the moment and am going away for a few days.

David Sven (gorro) | 567 comments I just got swept away with this last bit. It was very good. I'm guessing that was Tintaglia that threatened to tear Nettle's head off in their skill dream. I like that Nettle could eject her from the dream. And Seldon was present when Elliana threw down her challenge so that would explain how Tintaglia would know about the dragon but not everything Fitz knew.

I'm really looking forward to seeing how Fitz goes apprenticing Swift Wit.

I can't wait to get into the next book so I'm ready whenever you are Hanne

It's one of those mistakes he seems doomed to repeat. He's deciding things for Nettle, the Fool, and even making decisions that impact the throne - like off and going all ninja on the Piebalds - but I liked that part.

I'm enjoying this Trilogy even more than the previous two this time round. Hobb's writing just gets better.

Rob (robzak) | 432 comments Yeah. This trilogy might be my favorite of the 3, but I've only given a 5 to the 9th book.

Wastrel | 270 comments Yup. I'm not sure which is 'better', Tawny Man or Liveships, but Tawny Man is certainly my favourite. And this book, Golden Fool, is my favourite of the three, and hence possibly my favourite book. Despite the fact that surprisingly little happens in it - plotwise, we end up basically where Fool's Errand ended - many other writers would have just had the Narcheska's arrival and challenge as the prologue or first couple of chapters, and dropped the whole of the rest of the book. But as a result of the absence of plot, we get far more room to inhabit the character of Fitz, and to see and analyse his various relationships. The trilogy wouldn't be anywhere near as effective without this breathing space, I don't think.

Yeah, and at the same time there is the sense that so much is going on - Fitz barely has time to scratch himself.

OK, based on what i read above, in one week's time should be ok? so the 25th? sounds good?

I think everything is pointing to Nettle being a very powerful Skill user. I'm curious for her to come to Buckkeep because she might prove to be one of the most powerful they ever had. Future skill master? Future owner of the largest coterie ever? Who knows

Agree. That's what i absolutely adore about her. It's almost psychological. The only that hurts is how many times Fitz gets beaten up along the way.

The 25th is good for me :)
