Nathan "N.R." Gaddis (nathannrgaddis) | 258 comments Here's Dalkey Archive's suggestion as what a reading of the literary canon might look like; it begins ::

The Koran
The Mahabarata
The Bible
Blood and Guts in High School, Kathy Acker
...........

"Literary Works All Students Should Read"
http://www.dalkeyarchive.com/reading-...
"We asked our academic advisors to name which literary works all students should read. The following list of their responses is run annually to introduce new readers to the aesthetic tradition that CONTEXT [a periodical published by Dalkey] supports."

Many folks in these parts I'm sure have at least 50% knocked out.

Interesting list. Only 34 were not on either my read or to read list. Love the juxtaposition of the bible and Kathy Acker!

tia It's probably not even possible... but I'd love to read the entire Dalkey archive collection... starting with Tadeusz Konwicki's "A Minor Apocalypse."

MJ Nicholls (mjnicholls) | 211 comments I echo Tia's sentiments, except there are plenty of Dalkey books that have defeated me and have ruined my dream. The insanely boring Miss McIntosh, My Darling is one barrier, along with some other curios. Everything they publish nowadays seems to be golden . . .

Tom Willard | 17 comments MJ you are the king of Dalkey, impressive amount of their books you have read. I have read about 50, and so far I've rarely been let down. Maybe there will be a time in your life when Miss McIntosh will wow you in ways you could not imagine!

Nate D (rockhyrax) | 120 comments Everyone should definitely be reading Konwicki at least, that guy doesn't get enough credit!

How much of Miss MacIntosh did you manage to get through, MJ?

message 8: by Jim (new)

Jim The strange thing about Miss MacIntosh is that the writing is quite beautiful but the actual reading of the prose is like trying to do the breast stroke in a pool filled with chunky peanut butter - utterly exhausting!!!

I made it through a little over 300 pages before I climbed out of the pool and looked for some jelly to read instead...

MJ Nicholls (mjnicholls) | 211 comments Wow, Jim . . . 300 is admirable. I only read 15 pages before ennui set in, despite the prose (which is nice, but not Proust-like gold [for those into Proust]) carrying me along. No idea who the ideal reader for this book is. Someone who can lose themselves in waves of indulgence for 1200 very large pages? (So Proust fans?)
