Kathy Skaggs | 10 comments Hi, I'm Kathy and I'm the communications specialist for the Tennessee Coalition to End Domestic and Sexual Violence. I read mostly nonfiction: memoir, biography, history, nature and science, and other random topics. For fiction, I tend to prefer literary fiction, something well-written and thought-provoking. I did finally read Gone Girl, and I look forward to discussing it in this group. Other DV/SA themed books that are on my radar are Yes Means Yes, Domestic Violence at the Margins, and Hate 3.0 (which isn't out yet).

I will read almost anything, but love pure fiction. I have recently been into the Divergent series (hello, Halloween Costume!) and am reading The Cuckoo's Calling.

message 24: by Courtney (new)

Courtney Hohnholt | 7 comments OK, I picked up Gone Girl at the library and said to my self, "I'll just read the first chapter." 6 hours later I finished it and then slept through my alarm this morning! It was worth it. This book taught me to spend less time judging characters and trying to guess the twist, just enjoy the way the story unfolds.

message 25: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne | 1 comments Hello, I am new to this group and glad to be a part of it. As a survivor,I think the more creative we can be to raise awareness to domestic violence, the better. At the library now and going to inquire if Gone Girl is in circulation.

message 26: by Benjamin (new)

Benjamin Janey (benjaminjaney) | 1 comments My name is Benjamin Janey and I'm the author and publisher on the workbook, Domestic Violence The Cure.Presently, I write in 4 genres, but this domestic violence workbook means the most to me because it changes and saves lives. No one could know better, until someone started teaching better. I deal with this subject like never before in the world and have the only dv workbook in 2013 to receive 5 Star reviews on Amazon.

message 27: by Colleen (new)

Colleen Clary | 2 comments Hello, my name is Colleen. I love reading biographies and historical non-fiction as well as historical fiction. But I must confess that, as I just finished Gone Girl, it was the first book I've actually finished in several years. The intervening years were spent in / getting out of and now trying to get over an abusive relationship.

I like the concept of this reading group. We have the highest incidents of domestic violence & rape in the world!
I accidentally stumbled upon my current read The Sabi which deals with this in a different way that I have read before. Hope to be able to join in discussions and look fwd to sharing on these themes

Hello Shree,
I have looked at your blog and really like it. You may want to look into my current read The Sabi from South Africa by Diane Brown - fits perfectly with your theme for December. I Highly recommend.
What I particularly like about the book is that issues of violence are not projected as an ailment that afflicts only poor people

message 33: by Neil (new)

Neil Newton | 4 comments Hi, Everyone. I live in Tennessee and am interested in how the inconsistent laws regarding abuse and stalking can be strengthened. My wife was a victim of domestic violence years ago and, as I have read about it, I find that we have not met abuse head on as a society.
I'm glad to be here and look forward to reading Pamela's book. Trafficking is another area that needs some legal evangelists in this country.
I encourage you to look at protect.org. It is the first lobbying organization that is dedicated, not to a political or financial agenda, but to strengthen laws regarding child abuse. To me, it's a prototype for the type of effort that will be needed to make comprehensive changes to laws involving all types of abuse.
Thanks,
NeilNeil Newton

CeeCee James | 5 comments Hi Everybody. I am about to publish my memoir, and I am terrified. I think there still is the lingering fear of punishment for telling hanging over my head. I have 4 kids, a hubby, and 2 mini-dachshunds that keep my life busy when I'm not writing. I also have a small blog dedicated to those who need encouragement, called Joyful Living after child abuse. :) It's nice to meet all of you.

Greetings from the cold and frozen WI! I am a writer and musician who shares what it was like living in domestic violence. I started blogging about a year ago, and I have to say it's better than therapy, lol! I am new to Goodreads so I look forward to getting to know you all more.

Recently I read a book called "Walking Wounded" by Secret Angel. I met her in blog-land and she wrote about her escape as well. Here's to all us survivors!

Neil Newton | 4 comments Laci,

Thanks for joining. A special welcome to a homey. I grew up in queens and lived in Manhattan till I moved to Tennessee twelve years back.

If you are ready, please jump into Sara Niles book "torn from the inside out". In addition to writing this non-fiction account of domestic abuse, Sara has worked in the domestic violence field and has quite a bit of knowledge of the ins and outs of abuse law.

Feel free to comment at any time regarding the book. The more questions the better:-)

Welcome!

Neil

Amy Burk (amykaufmanburk) Hi, I'm Amy. I'm an author and blogger. I wrote my novel (Hollywood High: Achieve The Honorable) in reaction to the bullying I witnessed in high school targeting the gay boys. The book is also strongly feminist, with a strong female protagonist, and a subplot of sexual harassment and assault. Yesterday I posted on my blog "A Sexual Marionette" as a voice against the sexual objectification of girls and women. I'm glad to find this site.
