I have no idea. I'm with you, Jason's brilliant.

E I like Jason too but I think people don't like him because he and Percy clash. And Percy is the leader he has been from the start and when HoO started with Jason as the leader people got defensive for Percy and marked Jason as the bad guy. That is my theory.

Laurel Jason is not memorable for me, but I just reread The Lost Hero and I have to admit that I have a greater appreciation for Jason. He's not Percy and that's PERFECTLY fine. Jason is more about order and discipline. There needs to be a Jason to represent that. I think I'd like Jason more if I knew more of his story as a younger kid at Camp Jupiter and his interactions with his friends: Reyna, Dakota, Gywn, and eventually Hazel.

Parker I think people don't like Jason because they think he's a substitution for Percy. They think, "A BOOK THAT'S NOT ABOUT PERCY?! DIE, EVIL REPLACEMENT!" I read the Lost Hero first, so I've always preferred Jason. It's just one of those things.

Dayana Shagidov I have to say that I only disliked Jason in the third book, when he and Percy actually met. Until that point I rather liked him. I think that was because I got used to that that Percy was the only hero but in those books everyone got their chance to shine so Percy got out of the spotlight, or rather had to share it.

Water-an'-Wisdom I Hate Piper she thinks PERCY is unimpressive 9how dare she!!!) I don't like Jason because he thinks he's the leader well guess what Jason your not PERCY is!!! I really don't like Jason this is why I think I hate him he thinks he's just as good as Percy but he hasn't been through what Percy has, Percy is awesome though he went through the sea of monsters, collected the golden fleece, survived the underworld, went to Alaska, killed the giant in Alaska, Saved Artemis and Annabeth, held the sky, saved olympus twice, saved Juno, became praetor even though the romans dislike neptune (look at the temple page in the son of neptune.) returned the lightning bolt, ... would you like me to carry on? what has Jason done look at the lost hero and see how many quests he's done, because I compared them and Percy had a lot more quests.

Hannah I think people are determined to compare Percy and Jason, that's why people don't like him. He's not as ____ as Percy, well Percy is better because _____.

Jason isn't my favorite character by any means but I feel like a lot of people don't view him as his own character they just view him in relation to Percy.

Laurel Hannah wrote: "I think people are determined to compare Percy and Jason, that's why people don't like him. He's not as ____ as Percy, well Percy is better because _____.

Yes! We shouldn't compare Jason to Percy just because they traded places for the first two books. Jason also seems like a weaker character because the POVs we had of him were only in the first book when he lost his memories. If he gets POVs in the next book, he might (hopefully) be a stronger character since he remembers everything - or most.

Ariel Personally I love Percy and don't like Jason as much. If it came to a fight between them I would always root for Percy. BUT, I believe this is just because Percy came first. We've had more bonding time with Percy, we've grown up with him over the years (if you've been reading this series for a while, anyway). If it was reversed, and Rick Riordan had written about Jason before Percy, I'm sure we would all like Jason better. I think whoever Rick had decided to write about first would have been our favorite.

P.S. I saw that some one up there said Jason hasn't done as much as Percy, well, I beg to differ! He's done a bunch of things and gone on a lot of quests, we just haven't seen them firsthand like we have with Percy. Obviously he became praetor for a reason. He was the one who took care of the Titans in Los Angeles while Percy fought Kronus in New York, remember?

message 14: by anya (new) - rated it 5 stars

anya i dont hate jason

Ariel I don't hate Jason! I just don't love him as much as Percy, that's all.

Ainsley I don't hate Jason. I like Percy much better though. I don't get why people hate Jason. The only reason I don't like Jason more that Percy is because Jason stole the leadership from Percy. Curse you Jason!•_•

Laurel After reading the House of Hades, I have to say that I like Jason a lot more than I did before, especially when he stood up for Nico.

Ariel YES! I was so proud of Jason at that moment. That's exactly how he should have responded.

message 19: by Cleopatraselene2 (last edited Jun 26, 2017 07:16PM) (new) - rated it 5 stars

Cleopatraselene2 I love Jason. He is, in my opinion, the best characer in the whole series. I could go on for hours, but he is kind, smart, and sarcastic. I am pretty sure he is also an INTP personality type (I know the signs because I am one).

Tana Lovegood of Dumbledore's Army✞~ Rogers/America I like Jason. Sometimes to me he seems a little perfect but that's just in Piper's POV. He does have his own moderate sense of humor, we just aren't as attached to him as Percy. Maybe if we read about HIS adventures at Camp Jupiter and his friends and Reyna and such.

Purnima Honestly, I had to trudge my way through the first book because I did not like piper or Jason. Jason...oh jason...i dont know where to start. I feel that he is so use to being the leader that he can seem a bit arrogant about it, in my eyes. I honestly feel like hes perfect....too perfect. I cna't really find flaws with him and I don't connect with him at all. He is like superman and Percy is like batman. everyone likes batman more than superman

Grace I don't have a problem with Jason. In fact, even though he's definitely not my favorite character, I do find him to be a perfectly likable one.
I think people don't like him because in the Lost Hero, he might have seemed like a replacement for Percy but he's really not. So, my thinking is that everyone keeps comparing him to Percy instead of accepting him as his own character. Maybe if people can learn to accept him as his own character, he might get a little more respect

annie I kinda like Jason. Not as much as I like the other seven, but I think he has his qualities. At the beginning, I confess, he was little "too perfect" for me, a bit of a Gary Stu. But then he started fainting and getting hit in the head and that, somehow, made him fell more real to me xDD

Cleopatraselene2 Water-an'-Wisdom wrote: "I Hate Piper she thinks PERCY is unimpressive 9how dare she!!!) I don't like Jason because he thinks he's the leader well guess what Jason your not PERCY is!!! I really don't like Jason this is why..."

It is hinted that Jason led over five quests for Camp Jupiter. And when does he ever think he is better than Percy? Jason is a better leader though. He actually thinks before he acts. Piper is allowed to have her own opinion on Percy whether it aligns with your personal one or not.

Anton Jason is different from Percy, and that isn't a bad thing. People don't like him as much as Percy because they don't know him as much as Percy.

Percy does think before he acts. He wouldn't be able to win against Ares if he just charged blindly and wildly.

Also, why doesn't Leo have a real weapon like a sword, spear, scythe, axe, dagger or bow and arrow?

Though I guess to make up for that, Leo is easily able to summon bolts of fire without a problem and is a master mechanic, even better than other Hephaestus kids.

message 28: by Jayda (last edited Jul 23, 2015 10:39PM) (new) - rated it 3 stars

Jayda Am I the only one who thinks that Jason gets knocked out too much? I feel like out of the seven, Reyna and Nico he is he least helpful. Its not that he is useless but in every book he is knocked out at least once possibly twice. Also I think people don't like his personality as much... it is not that he is one sided, but he is not the funny, easygoing type of characters we are used to. He is a soldier used to discipline, which I find boring to read from as a pov.
But that is just my opinion.

Anton I think Jason's lack of a personality is because he still hasn't recovered all of his memories. Percy drank the blood from Medusa, so slowly he got his memory. Jason didn't have any of that.

Cleopatraselene2 Chereen wrote: "Maybe people don't take a liking towards him because of his relationship with Piper and Reyna? It is a really complicated situation. He knew Reyna a lot longer... Then one day he thinks Duhh.. Wher..."

The whole Jason/Reyna/Piper thing is all Aphrodite's fault. I agree that Rick Riordan should make a series about Jason's side in the titan war. Maybe it could be called Jason Grace and the Gods of Rome or something.

Ri Cleopatraselene2 wrote: "The whole Jason/Reyna/Piper thing is all Aphrodite's fault. I agree that Rick Riordan should make a series about Jason's side in the titan war. Maybe it could be called Jason Grace and the Gods of Rome or something."

I disagree. I think that if we had read about Jason before Percy, pretty much everyone would like Jason better. But I also feel that it's too late to go back to Jason's childhood.

I don't hate Jason, but I don't really like him much. He's definitely my least favorite character.

I don't think that being Piper's boyfriend makes him unloyal to Reyna, because they were never really together. Reyna may have had feelings for Jason, but they were obviously not reciprocated. He says that they were close, but I don't think they were ever any more than that. Of course, they may have become more if Jason had never met Piper, but that's really Hera's fault.

Amy Schulenberg i don't like jason. he is stuck up arrogant and has no sense of humor. i could hardly keep my eyes open during his part. some say its because we didn't know him as long or he didn't have his memories. not true! he is simply souless

message 33: by Niti (new) - rated it 3 stars

Niti I agree about the fact that him being a leader clashed with Percy's role. I mean I did feel like that, but you know Jason has this really nice personality. I mean it's not his fault that Hera took his memories and transferred him to another camp.

Eve O. Spellman Amy wrote: "i don't like jason. he is stuck up arrogant and has no sense of humor. i could hardly keep my eyes open during his part. some say its because we didn't know him as long or he didn't have his memori..."

Jason doesn't need a sense of humor to be one of the coolest characters. (view spoiler) He is a Roman and Romans are not known for their humor. They are known for:

- Levelheadedness
- Organized
- Leadership
- Straight forwardness
- Calm
- And loyal, devoted friends

I say go Jason Grace. For he is awesome, cool, collected, smart, devoted, loyal, trusting, and he has suffered too much by the hands of Juno/Hera and by haters. Go Jason!

Eve O. Spellman Amy wrote: "i don't like jason. he is stuck up arrogant and has no sense of humor. i could hardly keep my eyes open during his part. some say its because we didn't know him as long or he didn't have his memori..."

Also, he helped Nico in House of Hades. If he was soulless, and Nico is pretty hard to get along with, why would he bother?

Juliette I like Jason, and I really don't know why other people don't.

Sometimes I feel like he is too perfect and Rick Riordan created his character as a foil for Percy's. Percy is perfectly imperfect, which is probably why we all love him.

Jason is strong, hardworking, and a good leader. He doesn't try to take the lead role from Percy (except when the eidons are controlling them) and he finds a home with Piper at Camp Half Blood.

message 37: by Georgia (new)

Georgia Personally, I don't mind Jason. Though he isn't one of my top characters I think it is a common misconception that Jason will always do the right thing, a very Roman trait, however there are multiple times in MoA where he fights AGAINST the Romans.
But I think the main reason, which has been said before, is that we don't know him. With Percy we were given 5 first-person books, where we were able to really see who he was in great detail. When Jason, along with the other 5 characters, came in it is much more general and we don't get to know every single thing about them since there are other POVs in the books.
I think that his relationship with Percy is supposed to highlight not only the tensions between the Greeks and the Romans but also the tension between the children of the Big Three. In the Titan's Curse we also see a very tense moment between Thalia and Percy.
Lastly, his relationship with Piper kind of irks me. It seems that he just felt like he had to be with because she was available, pretty, and there. Unlike Percy and Annabeth's relationship where they really know each other and value each other's strengths and weaknesses. I don't know if Reyna and Jason would be a good couple or if I would like them together but it almost seemed to me that Jason got with Piper because he had to not because he wanted to.

Sorry, that turned about to be really long reason but the main point is: We know Percy in much more detail than Jason, so it is more difficult to accept him and determine who he is.

message 38: by AnnE (new) - rated it 4 stars

AnnE Noooo I love Jason! He is one of my favorite characters. Personally, I don't like Hazel and Frank.

anotherfungurl I like Jason. I like all the seven. But Jason is a challenge to Percy, that's why he is just so disliked. But think of it this way, if books had started making Jason main character, not Percy, most people would have liked Jason better.

message 40: by Mark (new) - rated it 3 stars

Mark Wilson He does, in ways, seem too flawless, so he can be a bit bland, but overall, I don't really hate him. I'm just unimpressed by him, and the same goes with Piper. The supporting characters, however, are quite a treat as a whole and more than make up for a protagonist I feel indifferent towards.

message 41: by Ahsaas (new) - added it

Ahsaas As he has stolen the leadership and commanding traits of the a lot more awesome than him Percy Jackson

message 42: by [deleted user] (new)

I mean, he always gets knocked out after a fight, and is absolutely useless. His only useful power is to FLY, but he couldn't save percabeth when the fell... he could have controlled the winds like he did with Piper in the Grand Canyon...but noooo.
(no flames, just me opinion)

Allanvdsouzahotmail.Com The reason why most of the fandom hates Jason Grace, is because of this obsession with Percy. This is one of the few things that i find annoying in this fandom, this obsession to always put Percy above everything and everyone, and if you excuse me, but i find this obsession with Percy really stupid.
I know that he was the first character of the riordanverse and all that, however, i don't think he should be always the only one in the spotlight, you guys are too obsessed with Percy, this limits your intelligence and makes you unable to appreciate and like any new character, because you are too busy caring only about Percy, is "Percy, Percy, Percy, Percy, Percy, Percy, Percy here, Percy that, Percy....." all the time.
You guys are so obsessed with Percy, that the only new character most of you liked, was Leo. And WHY? Because Leo is basically a "Percy" with fire powers, and that's it, the only reason why you guys liked Leo, is because he is a sarcastic little shit that jokes about everything, just like Percy, again, the problem is this stupid obsession with Percy.

Allanvdsouzahotmail.Com Now, i am gonna reply to some stupid complaints about Jason, and Piper as well, i guess you guys didn't had the intelligence or the abilitie to truly analyze his character, probably because you were busy being obsessive about Percy, as always:
1: "Jason is arrogant".
Jason IS NOT arrogant, he is confident, there is a difference.
Confidence: "I can do this!" Arrogance: "I will do this! Because everyone else is a piece of shit and i am better". See the difference? Jason NEVER said anyone was a piece of shit compared to him, he never said he was better than everyone, NEVER! Jason himself doesn't view himself as "the best", he judges himself everytime, if you guys had truly read his chapters, instead of being obsessive about Percy, you would know that. Actually the "Fanon" Percy, the Percy that you guys like to imagine, that is too different from the real Percy, is thousands times more arrogant, FUCKING HADES! THALIA, Jason's sister was arrogant and i don't see no one complaining or hating on her!
If you guys want to really know why Jason show confidence, is because he was raised by a pack of wolves, who threatened to kill him if he ever showed any sign of weakness, THIS is the reason why he acts confident, not because he is arrogant.

Allanvdsouzahotmail.Com 2:"Jason is too serious."
WOW! So you guys wanted Jason to be another Percy's copy, another sarcastic little shit that jokes about everything. Aren't Percy and Leo enough? Do you want to make Jason as well to be just like them?
Jason is serious because he was abandoned by his mother, raised by a pack of wolves, and lived most of his life in a fucking military camp! You can't expect a person that lived like that to be all laid back and relaxed like Percy or Leo. You need some seriousness in life as well, you can't just live your life like it was some kind of joke, because it isn't.
People say that you can't relate to Jason, i disagree, i know some people that CAN relate to Jason, i think that you guys can't relate to him, because you probably don't have any famous relative and probably don't seek to be accepted as yourself. I will explain:
Imagine if your father was a famous musician, and then everyone just expects for you to be as good as him, sometimes looks like people only want to meet you because of your father, not because of YOU, YOU don't matter, your relation to your father that matters.
THIS is how Jason lives, almost no one views him as "Jason Grace", most people view him just as "The son of Jupiter", and as the son of Jupiter, everyone expects him to be "the best", no one cares about his best, they just want him to be "The best", Jason lives like this, Jason lives in the shadow of his father. People who live like him, can relate to him. When your parents demands you to be "more like your brother", you can relate to Jason.
So, use your brain, before saying something so stupid like "no one can relate to Jason".

Allanvdsouzahotmail.Com 3: "Jason is trying to replace Percy"
WRONG!! As i stated before, Jason doesn't consider himself better than anyone, he isn't trying to replace anyone, he is just trying to find his own place in the crazy world he lives. Rick never stated he wants to write only about Percy, and Percy ISN'T the only demigod with leadership on the entire planet! Jason himself led the roman demigods to attack the Titan's base. Remenber that before saying "Percy is the only one able to lead" because your opinion is based on your personal liking, not on facts! Just because Jason is confident in his own abilities and doesn't worship Percy like a god, like you do, doesn't mean he is trying to replace Percy.

4: "Piper finds Percy unimpressive" Piper just said Percy didn't LOOKED like a big deal, he just didn't looked like a big deal. If you don't know, Piper DIDN'T lived adventures with Percy, she lived adventures with JASON and LEO, this is way, for her, they both looked more imprevissive than Percy. Unlike you, Piper didn't had five books to read about Percy's adventures.
Also, Percy already had Annabeth, Rachel, Reyna, Calypso, some amazons, FREAKING NICO DI ANGELO, do you really want to add Piper to the list? What? Do you want EVERYONE to worship Percy? You guys sounds like the christians of middle age, trying to force everyone to submit and love the only and true god (Percy), because liking anyone else is heresy.. seriously, not everyone loves Percy, there are people who doesn't worship Percy like you do, myself, i like Nico and Jason far more than Percy.

Allanvdsouzahotmail.Com To finish now, i gonna compare some feats from Percy and Jason, let's see if Jason is really THAT inferior to Percy as you guys state:
-Percy blew up a volcano.
-Jason blew up a mountain.

-Percy fought more titans, however, he needed help in every fight.
-Jason fought more giants, and defeated one titan, however, he defeated the titan with his bare hands, without help from anyone.

-Percy faced Kronos.
-Jason faced Gaea. Gaea > Kronos

-Percy had fallen in Tartarus for Annabeth.
-Jason had jumped from the Grand Canyon to save Piper, and this was BEFORE he even knew he could fly.

-Percy was offered immortality, something that some heroes before him were offered as well.
-Jason is the ONLY demigod who witnessed the true form of a goddess, and is alive to tell the story. Repeating, he is the ONLY ONE, there is no one else.

-Percy killed two snakes as a child.
-Jason was raised by a pack of wolves.

-Percy navigated the Sea of Monsters.
-Jason, a son of the god of the SKY, went to the bottom of the ocean and saved Percy.

"Why didn't Jason saved Percabeth? He is useless!"
Well, Frank could had transformed into a eagle and saved them as well, and still he didn't, so stop blaming only Jason. And really, no one of the seven is useless, just because they didn't acted as you wanted and needed to be saved sometimes, doesn't mean he/she is completely useless. Nico was completely useless in the fight against the twin giants, why no one complains about him?

message 50: by Cltolstoy (new)

Cltolstoy The reason I hate Jason Grace is because he had almost no personality in the books. He had blond hair and blue eyes and had a girlfriend who was a daughter of Aphrodite. He acted so "perfect" in the books it just led me to hate him. There have been too many heroes by Zeus that have overshadowed him. But Percy was a son of Poseidon he had amazing powers. Look at the third book, he caused a huge explosion that may have erupted a volcano. But everything Percy did may have even been better than Hercules. They both did incredible feats and defeated countless monsters. But Percy chose not to become corrupt like Hercules did, he chose to be the hero that prevented another occasion like what happened in the first five books. We have seen a son of Zeus do countless things but I think he doesn't live up to those standards as the rest, but Percy even if he was based on so high standards can overpass them entirely. Percy is a son of the Earth Shaker, he can cause massive balls of water to wipe away his enemies and defeated many gods like, Hades(A Big Three), Ares( God of War, when he was 12), That random god I don,t remember her name in which he drowned her with the river Styx. While Jason can barely summon a bit a lightning. To sum it up I think Jason is acted out like he is the hero the entire HoO series but he doesn't have the feats like Percy does or the differences how he is his own thing. The blond hair blue eyes guy with the daughter of the love god how surprising. But the black hair sea colored eyes with the daughter of the god of knowledge, Ty Lopez would approve.
