The National Book Award is given out this month, here is the longlist for 2013: http://www.nationalbook.org/nba2013.h.... If you scroll to the bottom, there's a youth section. On the left side of the page are links to previous years.
I read Last Night I Sang to the Monster which has won several awards, including ALA's Top 10 Best Books for YA.

Blood and Chocolate by Annette Curtis Klause which won South Carolina Book Award for Young Adult Book Award (2000), ALA's Top Ten Best Books for Young Adults (1998)
Any award will do. I don't think I've ever read a National Book Award winner... I'll have to find some.
I also recently finished Where Things Come Back which won the Morris Award and the Printz Award in 2012.
