I like the ominous introduction mentioning a "violent death". This isn't going to be your typical book.
I believe this book is going to have more in common with "Lord of the Flies" than "Tom Brown". Although I have to say I thoroughly disliked "Flies".
Besides, Gene seems to have this jealous streak running through him about Finney. He keeps passing it off as nothing though.

I liked how Knowles started the first chapter for there he had already set the mood and themes of the book...
I find all the elements of this book in fine balance and harmony with each other...
Definitely one of Knowles's best...


I agree about the characterization and how tiny feelings of guilt and jealousy keep creeping into his thoughts. Most of the time though, I kept thinking of the boys as being younger (around 12-14) rather than 16-17.
