Bookish | 13 comments So glad to see a group for trauma and dissociation books - there aren't any trauma groups except military PTSD and abuse survivors, and the DID group here only lets those with DID in rather than just those reading the books.

Found your account through the facebook page http://www.facebook.com/TraumaAndDissociation

Leslie Nelson | 2 comments I'm really excited to find this group also! I see many favorite books here, and more I look forward to reading. Thanks for starting this!

I have many more to add, but it will not allow me to add the personal inventory in one fell swoop, and I am having to add them one at a time. Anyone can feel free to add books as well.

message 4: by Bookish (new)

Bookish | 13 comments Looking forward to seeing some of your books too Leslie!

What are you favorites?

message 5: by Leslie (new)

Leslie Nelson | 2 comments Thanks! Most of my favorites were already listed here, but I did add one: Miss America By Day by Marilyn Van Derber. I love her book, she is such an inspiration to me. I don't care about the Miss America part, LOL. I mean she understands because she was molested as a child and repressed the memories. She went through several horrible years of healing, but now she is happy and assures others that there is an end to the pain. I love her.

I also really like Robert Oxnam's Fractured Mind and The Stranger in the Mirror. I think those are my top three, but of course I have many others that I like. How about you?

message 6: by Bookish (new)

Bookish | 13 comments I've never heard of that one Leslie, thanks for suggesting it. Speaking of beauty queens - Jon Benet Ramsey's case is in the news again. So sad.

Robert Oxnam's book I have read the extracts of but not got a copy. Stranger is the Mirror is interesting but I remember it being quite a lot of information. I can't think of another book that goes into derealization and depersonalisation as much though.

Alice Jamieson and Cameron West have both written excellent autobiographies, the books have been out a while so it's easier to get them second hand. :-)

Jeanne McElvaney | 1 comments Bookish, you bring up an excellent insight... that there may very well be readers who want to understand or learn about trauma and dissociation although they don't identify with being a survivor themselves. Many of us are learning because of people we love or know and want to support ~

message 8: by Bookish (new)

Bookish | 13 comments that's so true Jeanne, and most people at some point do experience a significant trauma in their lifetime, not everyone will develop a trauma disorder and many have delayed PTSD too.

Here's a sample chapter of a book - Understanding and Treating dissociative identity disorder by Elizabeth Howell. I've not had chance to read it yet, the free chapter is about how the different identities are arranged, and their roles.

E. Mcnew (emcnew) | 2 comments How do I add a video to the group? A friend suggested I post it but I don't know how! Also this is my book, I would love to add it to the shelf here! It is ranking #! in it's category for the second day :)Testing the Waters

Bookish | 13 comments that's great news

first you have to add the video to your profile - http://www.goodreads.com/videos/list_author/7279093.E_McNew

then you can search for it (I think) - it's not something I've tried myself but I think that's the only way

message 11: by Bookish (new)

Bookish | 13 comments looks like you added Testing the Waters to the bookshelf already too!

E. Mcnew (emcnew) | 2 comments I added the video!!! :) (well, to my page lol)

Bookish | 13 comments hi David! I hope you will add your books to the book shelf and the book list, and tell us more about them. I always thought it would be harrowing writing a book like yours... rather than being as positive experience as you said.

message 15: by Jenn (new)

Jenn Mather Nessen (crazyjster) | 1 comments thank you for adding me. I had wrist surgery the other day but I look forward to seeing what books you have posted and getting involved. my typing is a bit challenged and I am in major pain, but I look forwatd to checking back in a couple of weeks. Kerry (caseykerry) Thanks for the invite to the group. I read alot of non-fiction and trauma/dissociation books. I have a friend with DID and my knowledge through reading about it all (before we met) has helped her and her alters greatly. I'm very interested in memoirs etc and enjoy learning through reading, Great to be here!

message 18: by Sue (new)

Sue Julsen (suejulsen) I'm the author of the bestselling Bitter Memories series, about my life after being kidnapped by my father, then living with extreme abuse, so much so that I split into multiple personalities. Find all my books on my website.

Bookish | 13 comments Hi Kerry & Sue.
Sue - can't believe I have not heard of your book before, checking it out now.

I don't know if you saw the recent headlines - Obama is making some attempt to change regulations/laws to deal with military sexual assault.

message 22: by Sue (new)

Sue Julsen (suejulsen) Hi Bookish. I don't know why either, but glad you found me now. :)

I'm currently working through the workbook Coping With Trauma and Dissociation. Will see where the journey ends, I'm grateful to have found you guys. Thanks :)

Julianne | 1 comments Hello everyone,
Im Julie and currently writing a book based on living in foster homes, with my real parent(s), etc. Im at 26,000 words and hoping to find the inspiration in here to keep going.

message 26: by Sue (new)

Sue Julsen (suejulsen) Good luck on the writing Julie. :)

Glenna or Multiplicity (glennaormultiplicity) | 1 comments I am new to the group and look forward to visiting as oft as I can. I am a Multiple, and now can say that I am a functioning Multiple. My life is a composite of fractured mirror images and worlds within. I have been writing my story with the help of a ghostwriter on my life as a Multiple. It will be out hopefully in the next year. I have written a book of poetry titled 'Tapestrys Of Life' which is in fact the alters reaching out to me through the alter Judith who also is a writer. The poetry book is a composite of my life;though not written in the first person as those who have read it see there own first person in it.

Well, must go now and hope to visit again soon.

Ciao, glenna or multiplicity hall

message 29: by Antonieta (new)

Antonieta Contreras | 3 comments So glad to find this group. So important to connect and share info about trauma and dissociation.
I wrote extensively about both topics and how they relate in my book Traumatization and Its Aftermath, https://www.amazon.com/Traumatization...
Open to answer any questions you have about it.

Looking forward!

What percentage of traumatized people experience dissociation?

message 31: by CatherineAda (new)

CatherineAda Campbell | 37 comments Steve, that's an interesting question, but the definition and types of dissociation have recently expanded. Also, there are many mental health professionals who have not been trained to identify types of dissociation in clients. If Antonieta doesn't have an answer for you (us, because I'm interested too), maybe an adhoc poll on the trauma threads on reddit? There are so many, many symptoms identified with trauma that are also associated with other conditions. Sometimes I feel like we are on the cusp of major breakthroughs in the identification and treatment of trauma. Antonieta? You're the expert - please weigh in.
