About a year before the story line takes place, two gangs of teenagers who call themselves "The Skulls" and "The 59'ers" committed mass murder of adults as a rebellion. These mere children, who average around the age of 15, were outcasts and weren't accepted into their society as everyone else regularly was, so they decided to get what they wanted... Everyone's attention. After this teenage-driven massacre occurred, the government didn't know where to turn. Never in their worst nightmares had they thought that their own children would kill their parents simply because they want to be accepted. So a man named Alfred Furnace gives them a solution. An underground prison that they will be forced to stay in for the rest of their lives. Congress is skeptical about this idea at first but the more Alfred talks, the more they are intrigued by the seemingly brutal idea. After all they were just kids, right? Congress thought otherwise. Only a month after Alfred Furnace released his idea, the government funded his prison's build and went with his idea of having it below bedrock level so they would have no chance of ever escaping. Little did they know, Alfred had a plan of his own. He hoped to do genetic experiments on these children to create an army of monsters and take over the planet. When he started to run out of "experiment subjects" he started making his men frame young kids for murder so that he could unlimitedly fund his own sick plans. Many kids were falsely accused of murdering their best friends or their parents... Alex and Zee are only two of the millions who were.
"Fresh and Ferocious!"
This extremely accurate quote from the amazing author James Patterson completely describes my feelings about this book series. The author, Alexander Gordon Smith is a genius in my eyes because of this book series. Not only is the plot completely unbelievable, but you find yourself breathing heavilly while reading because of how intense the feelings are. It's as if the author has pulled you into the prison with the characters. Alex, the main character whom the story is based around, is a very well developed dynamic character. As the series progresses you find him maturing and learning new things in all different ways. It's as if he adapts to a new lifestyle even though he has been put into a terrifying situation. He is a brave young man in my eyes. I didn't like Alex's best friend Zee from the prison however. He may be a good friend to Alex and save his life a few times but he is a static character. I found his personality to be slightly bland because his actions were predictable throughout the book, when on the other hand Alex is a spontaneous hero who makes impulsive decisions simply to save the lives of others. I think this book was teaching you that no matter how bad the situation is, you can always make it out into a better place. The author did an amazing job of teaching this lesson to me because this book literally changed me. I enjoy Alexander's style because it's surprising. The book is a horror inside of a thriller inside of a dystopian novel. I can't see everyone liking this book but I can say that I can see a lot of people reading this book because of its morals. I believe the main idea is that everyone has strength within, but it may not come out until the best possible time. This book was groundbreaking for me because I was astonished at the fact that he could write something so mind-boggling with characters so well rounded. Some of my favorite things about this book are the fact that it's fictional but not unbelievable. Such as the hell hounds who are released into the prison if the cellmates don't return to their cells. The book appealed to me on an emotional level because in the beginning I felt as Alex and I were extremely alike and the fact that he went through so many things that I can relate to metaphorically grabbed me by the throat. I'm not at all ashamed to say that this book had me in tears or choking tears back more times than I can count. What I'm trying to say is that this book is amazing and I would recommend it to anyone who loves a good thrill from a book.
