It was LeGuin's birthday on Monday 21s October, so there's a nice little piece on tor.com: http://www.tor.com/blogs/2013/10/on-t...-

I really need to read her novels. If our libraries here had less smelly editions, I'd have been all over them.

Yeah. I'd say 80% of the books I've picked up to borrow, I've ended up putting down again. I know it's the tropics & all, so I expected a bit more mildew, but I just can't stomach books that smell like cheetohs and various other..... stuff.

Cool!

I just listened to a great story of hers on the Lightspeed magazine podcast, called "The Stars Below" Here's a link to that one and a couple more. They can be read or listened to. http://www.lightspeedmagazine.com/aut...

There's also a lot of stuff by Ken Liu there: http://www.lightspeedmagazine.com/aut...
To keep it on topic, Ken Liu says he's a huge Le Guin fan :-)

Good-o. I've got a bunch of cooking/dish-washing to do later, so I'll need something to listen to..

The opposite side of the smelly paper book coin: e-books are sadly scent free.

Too true. I wear my favourite scent (Dior's Fahrenheit for men), because it reminds me of books. I think it's the leather notes, but it just reminds me of a big study filled with books.

message 8: by Andrea (new)

Andrea | 58 comments Here's a helpful household hint: light a half dozen cones of strong incense under a screen or grate, and perch the book over it (spine standing, pages spread) and smoke those nasty smells out. Works for moldy, musty odors, don't know about Cheetohs. You could also spritz the book with Dior, but that could get expensive.

Dior's Fahrenheit 451?

message 10: by Frozenwaffle (new)

Frozenwaffle | 163 comments I have only read Wizard of Earthsea and The Left Hand of Darkness, and I have to say I wasn't thrilled with any of them. :/ But I had alot of expectations, and we know that never ends well.

So that's where the smell of books comes from! The secret ingredient is fire.

Ursula transported me to a mystical place where dragons lived and a boy rode one, where magic was real, before, I started paying taxes. A unique talent. I can see where Harry Potter was born in Earthsea. Although, in its own right, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, is a damned good book.

message 13: by Richard (new)

Richard we studied Earthsea at school, i think by dint that i had a huge crush on my english teacher at the time (despite hear wearing mustard yellow stockings) i would be unable to read Earthsea now without flashing back to being 13 again

on the smelly library book topic did anyone else read that in the US traces of syphillus has been found in many copies of 50 Shades of Gray?

message 14: by James (new)

James Loftus No but sounds a bit like the bogus story about Kentucky Fried Chicken and the rat in it. Might be another competing author started it. Not, me! Good idea though.

Is anyone really surprised? All the second hand copies of 50 Shades in our old book exchange used to creep me out for hygiene reasons. Then when you realise that most of their customers are quite elderly.... Eeeuw. Can't erase that mental image no matter how hard I try.

message 16: by James (new)

James Loftus I used to think old people were creepy too. I was a cop once, and on patrol in this country town I was working in I commented to my older and wiser partner about all the creepy old people, walking around, and their fashion un-sense. Ron, (top bloke) said to me, "The only difference between them and you is they were born before you."

He made me think.

You know what? I think he was right.

message 17: by Derek (new)

Derek (derek_broughton) | 796 comments And now we're the creepy old people, anyway….

Be that as it may, I still don't want to think about them wanking.

James Loftus What they do is sit back and tell lies about their youth. Like we all will too one day. I already do that.

Which is fine. Since THAT doesn't leave organic material (which may or may not contain traces of syphilis) on second hand copies of Fifty Shades.

well if they do lets hope the pensioners in question are Helen Mirren or Sean Connery rather than the cat lady from The Simpsons

The parkinson interview is an embarrassment. I'm glad I'm not English any more. Helen in The Cook The Thief His Wife & Her Lover...wow!

I loved that movie too. My introduction to "foreign film"!

Parkinson definitely made a fool of himself - which is probably why it's not on the "Best of" DVD my dad sent me a couple of xmases ago..

message 29: by James (new)

James Loftus For me, 'The Hill', was Sean Connery's best film.

message 30: by Richard (new)

Richard nah, the best connery has to be The Man Who Would Be King

message 31: by James (new)

James Loftus Very good film.

Cain + Connery = Excellence.

I was going to make an exception for The Saint as well, but I thought it would dilute my rage.

message 41: by Derek (new)

Derek (derek_broughton) | 796 comments We wouldn't want that. Justifiable rage should be nurtured.

message 42: by Richard (new)

Richard Roger Moore was the best at the double entendres, he made them all wonderfully filthy whereas Connery made them simply suave.

Moore was far more a Porn Star bond, which is kinda gross i'll admit but the one liners and double meanings were a lot more fun

and he could wear the shit out of a pair of flairs

Don't mess-up the hair Roger. Keep the blow-waver handy.

Cool! I'm with the guy who wanted to know what sort of paint lasts that long. I take it that it made it to its 50th anniversary.
