I would most like to meet Agatha Christie's Hercule Poirot...and match wits with his "Little Grey Cells"! (and see if the perfect mustache is really as perfect as it seems).
Although it would also be fun to share a cup of tea with Miss Marple...and solve a cunning mystery while knitting by the fire!

message 2: by Randa (new)

Randa A cup of tea with miss marple, dinner at the italian restaurant with hamish macbeth and an after dinner drink with agatha raisin.

message 3: by Annag (new)

Annag | 6 comments Oh, for me it's Lord Peter Wimsey, no doubt! Perhaps with a ride in his marvelous car and a view of his primrose library.

message 4: by Miss M (last edited Nov 04, 2013 12:12PM) (new)

Miss M Even though he's in the wrong country, I'd love to sit down for a meal (prepared by him) with Martin Walker's Bruno, Chief of Police and get a chance to meet the locals.

message 5: by Brenda (new)

Brenda Clough (brendaclough) Definitely Lord Peter. But Bunter must make the tea, and there should be scones.

message 6: by Wendy (new)

Wendy Percival | 30 comments I'm with you Jennifer. A cuppa with Miss Marple and learn all about her little trick of observing without being observed! (Useful for authors listening in on other people's conversations.... For research and plot idea purposes, of course!)

message 7: by Jean (new)

Jean Guarr | 280 comments John Maddox Roberts' detective Decius would be my choice, if I only get one. We could have a nice gossip about what Julius Caesar, Marcus Antonius, Augustus, Aggrippina, and all those other fascinating Romans were really like.

C.J. (cjverburg) | 282 comments Annag wrote: "Oh, for me it's Lord Peter Wimsey, no doubt! Perhaps with a ride in his marvelous car and a view of his primrose library."

Me too! & preferably before he falls for Harriet!

message 9: by Marie (new)

Marie O'leary | 1 comments I've always had a soft spot for Albert Campion.
And I'd love to hang out with Melrose Plant and Richard Jury, and have a pint at the 'Jack and Hammer'.

I like Campion too... This discussion reminds me of a book meme I saw elsewhere -

message 11: by Portia (new)

Portia Leslie, live the seating plan :)

message 12: by Leslie (last edited Nov 05, 2013 12:37PM) (new)

Leslie | 1664 comments Personally, I would seat Lord Peter (by Dorothy L. Sayers) on one side of me and Albert Campion (by Margery Allingham) on the other. Miss Marple (by Agatha Christie) and Miss Silver (by Patricia Wentworth) in seats 2 & 6, and perhaps Mrs. Bradley or Hilary Tamar (by Sarah Cauldwell) in seat 4. Then Julian Kestrel (by Kate Ross) in seat 3 and Sir John Fielding (by Bruce Alexander) in seat 5.

message 13: by Randa (new)

Randa I feel utterly uneducated because I haven't heard of most of these "detectives". Guess I have a lot of reading ahead of me.

message 14: by Brenda (new)

Brenda Clough (brendaclough) I would not mind a long coze with Harriet Vane, either. Mystery writers are always fun!

message 15: by [deleted user] (new)

Richard Jury from the Martha Grimes books. It would be a way to meet Melrose Plant who I'd really like to meet.

message 16: by Leslie (new)

Leslie | 1664 comments Randa wrote: "I feel utterly uneducated because I haven't heard of most of these "detectives". Guess I have a lot of reading ahead of me."

No, probably just more modern than I am! Most of mine are from books of the so-called "Golden Age" of mysteries (first half of the twentieth century). I am going back to my post and adding in a key.

I can think of many more I would like to meet, such as Richard Jury. And I agree with Miss M that if we include countries outside the UK, that I would be happy to eat meals with several Italian detectives!

message 17: by Ellen (new)

Ellen | 227 comments A meal with Sherlock Holmes at 221B Baker Street prepared by Mrs. Hudson. Since Mr. Holmes doesn't care for the ladies very much I think I would like to include Dr. Watson who is a bit of a ladies man.

message 18: by Brenda (new)

Brenda Clough (brendaclough) It would be untidy. These bachelor digs, you know. Better to go out with Holmes and Watson to one of their favorite restaurants.

message 19: by [deleted user] (new)

Randa wrote: "I feel utterly uneducated because I haven't heard of most of these "detectives". Guess I have a lot of reading ahead of me."

You won't have any trouble finding authors and books in this group! That's why I love Good Reads.

message 20: by C.J. (new)

C.J. (cjverburg) | 282 comments I can see Ariadne Oliver doing one of those $65-a-plate dinner-with-the-famous-author tours, but most of the detectives we'd like to meet would run screaming.

There are some supporting characters I'd happily dine with, too. Harriet Vane for sure! Lily Rowan would be more fun than Nero Wolfe, & Archie Goodwin even better. Miss Marple's nephew Raymond? the author. Campion's Amanda, the aviatrix, & his friend the cop, Charlie Luke.

message 21: by Miss M (last edited Nov 05, 2013 05:56PM) (new)

Miss M Carol wrote: "...but most of the detectives we'd like to meet would run screaming..."

LoL. I think most of the detectives of more recent (twenty or so) years are more likely met drinking morosely in the pub, or tucked up at home with an Indian takeaway washed down with a lager and/or single-malt, while listening to obscure jazz...

message 22: by Jean (new)

Jean Guarr | 280 comments Charles Todd's Ian Rutledge, C.S. Harris' Sebastian St. Cyr, Lindsey Davis's Falco, Tony Hillerman's Lieutenant Joe Leaphorn, Grahan Ison's Sgt. Dave Poole, John Maddox Roberts' Decius, and Sally Spencer's Insp. Charlie Woodend would be my choices; although if you ask me next week I might have a different list. Falco and Decius would be in 1 and 7 so I could best enjoy their witty gossip. Leaphorn and Woodend would be in 2 and 6, still near enough for talk on the more serious side. Rutledge, Poole, and St. Cyr would be in 3, 4, and 5 so I could best enjoy their spectacular good looks.

message 23: by Brenda (new)

Brenda Clough (brendaclough) Oh, Archie Goodwin would be great fun. We could go to a bar in mid-town Manhattan and drink cocktails. And wouldn't Amelia Peabody be a great companion to go to a Middle Eastern restaurant with?

message 24: by Sonali (new)

Sonali V | 129 comments My first choice would be Adam Dalgleish (P D James), then Inspector Wexford(Ruth Rendell), Rebus (Rankin) and finally Inspector Morse.

message 25: by [deleted user] (new)

All of these would be fun. Can you imagine gathering them all together for a party?

message 26: by Ray (new)

Ray Love to meet Morse and Lewis.

Please count me in too! What fun.

message 29: by Ruth (new)

Ruth | 101 comments I'd like to meet Edmund Crispin's detective Gervase Fen and indulge in some literary games and puzzles.

message 30: by Leslie (new)

Leslie | 1664 comments Sarah wrote: "I'd like to meet Edmund Crispin's detective Gervase Fen and indulge in some literary games and puzzles."

:)

message 31: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca (rebecca487) I have to pick Sherlock Holmes for this one. I would love to be his companion during an investigation and just watch him examine barely recognizable footprints in the dirt.

message 32: by Betsy (new)

Betsy | 46 comments No doubt about it - - definitely Richard Jury and Melrose Plant (Martha Grimes) and then Charles Todd's Ian Rutledge. What fantastic men and characters.

message 33: by Jean (new)

Jean Guarr | 280 comments Jean wrote: "Charles Todd's Ian Rutledge, C.S. Harris' Sebastian St. Cyr, Lindsey Davis's Falco, Tony Hillerman's Lieutenant Joe Leaphorn, Grahan Ison's Sgt. Dave Poole, John Maddox Roberts' Decius, and Sally S..."

I like your list! I'll go with that also. Brains, humor, and good looks win every time.

message 34: by Mara (new)

Mara Pemberton (marapem) All of my favorite ones. Joanna Brady most of all. Then Eve, Roarke & Company. Amelia Peabody & Company. Anna Pidgeon. Duncan Kincaid & Gemma James.

message 35: by Mara (new)

Mara Pemberton (marapem) Guido Brunetti & Co.

Yes! Give Harriet a run for her money! Lord Peter all the way :)

message 37: by Karlyne (new)

Karlyne Landrum I think I'd like to have tea with Miss Silver, and then she could teach me how to knit.

message 38: by Raymond (new)

Raymond (rrea) | 1 comments for some reason Adam Dalgliesh.

message 39: by Michell (new)

Michell Karnes (royalreader) | 33 comments I would love to meet Charlotte and Thomas Pitt.

message 42: by Mara (new)

Mara Pemberton (marapem) With both of my hands down AMELIA PEABODY!!!!!

message 43: by Mara (new)

Mara Pemberton (marapem) Though they are not a detectives, but they are important part of the GUIDO BRUNETTI series, I would love to meet Sengorina Electra and Paola Brunetti.

message 44: by Glenna (new)

Glenna Mason | 4 comments I would love to run into Elizabeth George's Tommy Linley.

message 45: by Kate (last edited Jun 13, 2016 08:50AM) (new)

Kate | 1 comments Rhys Bowen's Lady Georgie would be tons of fun to hang around, but how could one resist meeting Mr. Holmes and Dr. Watson?

message 46: by Michell (new)

Michell Karnes (royalreader) | 33 comments Oh, yes Georgie would be very fun to meet!

message 47: by Karen (new)

Karen Plummer This is a difficult question to answer! Of the classics, I'd love to meet Albert Campion, Miss Marple, Sherlock Holmes and John Watson... but I'd really love a weekend at Chimneys with Bundle Brent and her father and Superintendent Battle. Of the more modern era, I want to go to the pub with DCI Alan Banks!

message 48: by Dyah (last edited Jun 23, 2016 08:10AM) (new)

Dyah (dyahsubagyo) | 2 comments They live in the different ages, but I'd really love to have a good meal (Maybe some hearty steak in a gentleman's club where ladies are allowed? Do such clubs exist?) with Lord Peter Wimpsey (pre Harriet Vane), Sherlock Holmes, and Hercule Poirot. I will wait for the subtle bickering which will definitely happen between those three. Poirot ridiculing Holmes, Holmes with his awesome social skills (he'll definitely bluntly state anything in his mind, tee-hee tee-hee), Lord Peter Wimpsey stating that personally he finds their company interesting but saps his energy. Ooooh. Would definitely like that.

message 49: by Emmy (new)

Emmy B. | 87 comments Dyah, can I come with? This sounds awesome, and I'll find the right club, never fear :)

message 50: by Karlyne (new)

This sounds like a play in the making, as long as we add Campion, the Misses Silver and Marple, Inspector Alleyn and maybe Brother Cadfael... It would be an awful lot of fun!
