What's the first independent reading book you've read this school year, and what's the second or a subsequent independent reading book you've read this school year?

Which book would you recommend to others as being a better, more interesting, read, and why?

Provide three clear reasons why you would select one book you've read over another.

The first independent reading book I have is Fake Me a Match. The second independent reading book I have read this year is Better Nate Than Ever.
The book I would recommend to others is Better Nate Than Ever. This is a really good book and very powerful book. Nate went all the way to NYC to audition to try and become an actor. He worked really hard and he had to deal with some many tough people laughing at him and telling him he would not make it to the auctioned. He showed that if you have a dream go and try to achieve and believe in your dreams. In the book they kick him out of the audition. As he is exiting the audition he sees his aunt walking around NYC and begs her to take him back to the audition.

Miguel | 22 comments The first book that I read this school year was The Hunger Games.
The second book that I read this school year The Bully by Paul Langan.

The book that I recommend to other people would be The bully because it's like a real life drama book that students go through everyday. Also while reading this book it's makes you feel as if your that character. I would recommend reading books from the series which is called the Blueford Series. There is many books that are interesting as this book and other real life drama books. They try to make the book as close as they can near to real life things that happens daily.

Liam | 27 comments The first book I read was to kill a mocking bird. The second book I read was Animal Farm. I would recommend To kill a mocking bird over Animal Farm for a few reasons. For starters, Mocking bird has more content and more actions. It also has a much more relatable plot then animal farm. Finally it, as a whole, has evidence of sudle tells and clues that show that the author really put a lot love into this book.

Kyla Cain | 19 comments The first independent reading book I've read this year was Identical by Ellen Hopkins. The second independent reading book I've read was Perfect by Ellen Hopkins.

I would recommend Perfect to others as being better because it was very easy to read as Identical was kind of hard to get in to. Perfect takes you on a whole roller coaster of emotions. Perfect is just like it's name, perfect. In my eyes and you can really relate to it.

Brian Rosario | 36 comments The first book i read this year was Double Identity by Margaret Peterson Haddix. The second was Fahrenheit 451.
I would recommend double identity for people who like science fiction. I would recommend Fahrenheit 451 for people that like to read a fiction book. And a book that has a lot of plot twists.

cordelllane n summors (summorscl) | 19 comments The first independent reading book I've read this year was NERDS: National Espionage, Rescue, and Defense Society.
The second book that I read this school year was The Witch of Blackbird Pond.

I would recommend The Adventures of Captain Underpants, because it funny plot, you can relate to the main characters, and finally the plot is really smart.so if you love action, comedy then you would love this book.

Rocco Rinaldi-Rose (roccorr) | 40 comments The first book that I read this school year was Power, Sex, Suicide: Mitochondria and the Meaning of Life, by Nick Lane. The second book that I read this school year was The Lady and the Monk: Four Seasons in Kyoto, by Pico Iyer.

Of these two books, I would heartily recommend the Pico Iyer. Though Lane is a brilliant scientist, his writing skills leave something to be desired, and his explanations of high-level scientific theories can be a little bit unclear. Iyer, on the other hand, is a master of prose, able to make the mind see, with unearthly clarity, the beauty of the Japanese society. Iyer also has quite a bit of experience with this type of writing, as evidenced by the many highly acclaimed books authored by him, most of them in the same vein as this one. "The Lady and the Monk" captures the essence of Japanese culture, beauty, and literature into a short, adventure-filled 300 page book. Pico Iyer truly is a master of his art.

Ronan | 19 comments So far, I am still reading A Clash of Kings, by George R. R. Martin. This book is very long, but extremely gripping and I would definitely recommend it to any lovers of fiction. Each character is so well drawn out, you eventually feel like you know them and they become part of your life. It is very well written, and the plot is excellent. It is a bubbly tale of politics, battle, love and the will to survive and conquer. However, you should read the first book in this series, called A Game of Thrones. The series is named A Song of Ice and Fire.

Bruce Turley | 17 comments The first book I've read was Turn of the Golden Witch and the second book I've read wasBanquet of the Golden Witch

I would recommend to read Banquet of the Golden Witch more than my other book. My first reason is that this book is a lot easier to understand. In the scenario, every thing is explained better, everything seems interesting, and everything seems more spooky. My second reason is that, they know there is a 19th person in the house who could be responsible for the murders instead of taking 30 pages talking about how there is only 18 in the last book.

Shyaka | 11 comments the first book i read this year was the warriors heir and the second book i read was the wizards heir.
i would recommend the warriors heir over the wizards heir well because it the first in the series but for a few other reasons, one reason is that the warriors heir has a very interesting plot that keeps the readers on their toes. another reason is that in the warriors heir their is a fantasy element that is kind of complicated which keeps the reader engaged. another reason that i recommend the warriors heir is the main character in the book is very relatable.

Imani | 25 comments The first book i was reading was Clean and the second book i read was Night.

Both books were really good. The one I would recommend is Night. The 3 reasons I would recommend Night are...
-The story is based on a very well known time period when the holocaust was a huge, known thing.

-When the narrator was taken to concentration camp it would grab the reader because they explain the experience there in so much detail it could put you on the camp with him.

-It's non-fiction touching story.

Monica | 22 comments The first book I read was Along for the Ride by Sarah Dessen
The second book I read was The au-pairs Sun-Kissed by Melissa de la cruz.

The book I think is better is Along for the ride because while both were entertaining Along for the ride had a better written and thought out story line. Along for the ride has a consistent story line with subplots that are effectively used and add to the story while au pair sun-kissed had to many things going on at the same time. Also the 1st book I read had a deep meaning, a part of the story that wasn't just about teenagers but about things people deal with, the difficulties of grief and feeling abandoned by a parent even if they're still there. When you read this book you feel more connected and drawn into the book but au pairs sun-kissed is more of a simple fun read that doesn't require much thought.

Web | 10 comments The first book that I read was the Lost World by Michael Cretin
The second was the houses of Hades by Rick Riorden

I would not suggest reading ether of them because they are both in a series so unless you've read all the books that come prior to both I wouldn't suggest reading them but the more intellectual & interesting of the 2 is the Lost World by Michael Cretin because it is really deep about the content that it covers & it has a amazing story but by no standards is the outer book bad it just isn't as good.

message 15: by Zachary (new)

Zachary Killmer | 4 comments The first book I read this year was Alice Through the Looking Glass by Lewis Carrol; the second being A Clockwork Orange by Anthony Burgess.

I believe both books are well-written, however; A Clockwork Orange was a much more satisfying, difficult book, mostly due to it's cynical charm and the anti-hero's use of the fictional Nadsat slang, a language made up of Russian etymology with over-pronouciations or anglisised versions of the word, specifically for the writing of the book, which is a reason to read it by itself. In addition, A Clockwork Orange brings up several social issues that are present today, namely bands of delinquents roaming the streets for the sole purpose of hurting and/or robbing people, albeit this issue only being present in less wealthy areas where younger people are more prone to behaviour mentioned above. Ultimately, A Clockwork Orange is simply more rewarding, teaching the reader language skills, as well as a heightened ability to make sense of the nonsensical; I highly recommend it.

Nichollas Rampulla | 17 comments Sadly I've only finished one independent reading book so far and that is NERDS. What can I say I'm a slow reader. However I would recommend this book out of all the other books I've read before it. This book is actually the sequel to another favorite book of mine which is the first NERDS. It picks up exactly where the last book left off and maintains the witty humor of the first book as well. However it also adds a new layer to the story by exploring more into the agents home life and what it like being a misfit and a spy.

message 17: by Julien (new)

Julien | 24 comments The first book I've read was Unkillable , the second one was Lord Loss? I can't really remember... Unkillable Lord Loss The book I'd recommend is Unkillable, this is because I find the story much more quick paced. In Lord Loss, the story can get a bit boring. While in the other one, everything is always moving along. Another reason is that the story itself is more interesting, the story seems more imaginative. The last reason is that Lord Loss is about chess, a little too much chess I think.

Michael Marrero | 15 comments The first book that I've read is Timeline and the second book that I read, but reading again is The Way of the Shadows.

The book that I would recommend is The Way of the Shadows because it is a fantasy fiction theme type of book.

I would pick The Way of Shadows over Timeline because Timeline would get really boring for a couple of pages, but The Way of Shadows it would only get boring for one or two pages. Also The Way of Shadows has a very good plot twist with all the characters. The Way of Shadows is the type of book that would make you imagine what is really happening in the book

Alvin | 18 comments My first book that I've read this year was known other then ''The Hunger Games'' by Suzanne Collins. This is then followed up by the successors of the trilogy. If I had to recommend any book I suppose it would be the Game Of Throne series because its pretty cool from time to time. Not to mention that the trilogy has its moments. The trilogy also has a t.v. show based on it so you can compare the two.

Willem | 21 comments The first book I read this year (for school) was Leviathan by Scott Westerfeld. This was closely followed by the second book in the trilogy, Behemoth, also by the same author. I'd defiantly recommend the entire series to others, as I already have on several occasions. However, in my eyes, I'd view Leviathan the better of the two books. I like the setting and feel that this book has, opposed to the other one. You really get to experience a "clanker" city (Istanbul) firsthand. In this second book, the two main characters feelings become twisted and entangled, and Deryn realities her love for Alek.

Laszlo | 18 comments The first book I read this year was Caching Fire By Suzanne Collins. Then I read the next book in the seres Mocking Jay. If i where to recommend a book, It would be all the books in the hunger games trilogy. I would do this because they are suspenseful interesting books.

message 23: by Raquel (new)

Raquel | 12 comments The first book I read this year was The Green Mile and the I read One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. I would suggest the Green Mile because I thought the story was more engaging and I found it more interesting. They are both very similar in terms of mental status between characters. Regardless the Green Mile is one of the greatest books I've read, and it comes highly recommended.

message 24: by Akahr (new)

Akahr Bussant | 16 comments Thee first book that I read was The Lighting Thief and then The Sea of Monsters both by Rick Riordan. They're both great reads but I would recommend The LightningThief first. I would recommend the Lightning Thief because it's the first book in the series. If you read the sea of monsters first you would be a little lost. Also, because the Lightning thief is longer, has a better plot and a better conflict. Finally, because the Lightning is a movie, you could compare the movie to the book. I like the book much more then the movie.

message 25: by Max (new)

Max Warner | 19 comments The book that I have been reading was The Bluest Eye by Toni Morrison, this book is a good read for anyone interested in the history of African Americans. One reason to why I recommend this title is because it gives a realistic look into how people of color reacted to other races. Another reason is because it is simply entertaining, the plot shifts and changes multiple times, and the characters always have interesting things going on. My last reason is that, this novel is very accurate and gives an in depth look on history.

message 26: by Gabe (new)

Gabe | 18 comments My first book was the hunger games my second was part two catching fire.
I would recommend this series because it is mainly for teens and is very enjoyable. This book is very long but not hard to read. There is also a movie on the book. But the book version is better.

message 27: by Brandyn (new)

Brandyn | 10 comments My first independent reading book was "Catching Fire," and my second book was "The house of Hades." I would recommend The House of Hades to anybody who may be interested in Greek mythology, but not without reading the previous books first. If you are not, then I recommend Catching Fire because it is a very detailed and clearly written story with lots of action that teenagers would enjoy.
