Vintage Tales discussion

Hi everyone,

Although there is only a few of us, I was wondering if anyone was interested in doing a group read next month? Seeing as there are so little of us right now, perhaps we could only do a short story or something? Unless everyone has an overwhelming urge to read the same book!

I'm thinking, normally, to do a 'classic' and a 'contemporary classic' group read. The first would be pre-1900, the latter post-1900, just to get a bit of variation. Depending on how popular they are, I might further split the 'classic' group read into 'pre-1700' and '1700-1900', to really single out the Victorian era. But that is dependant of course on what people think and of their popularity.

What are people's views on this? Do you want to do one this month?

I like your idea of doing that, Holly. Which one can we do this month? Do you want us to do nominations and vote for it? I noticed that I read the adventures of huckleberry finn when I was in school too.

I think we can leave it open to any classic this month, considering its just starting. Nominating sounds the fairest way possible, I'll set up a thread for that once we get a few more opinions.

I think it sounds like a good idea. I will do it if I can get through my other two first. Otherwise, I'll just stalk the discussion of whatever you read to see how good whatever book you're reading is.

That's why I'm thinking we should do a short story, or perhaps a novella? Christmas is after all a busy time! I'll make a thread about nominations now!

Okay cool. hey holly what would count as a novella for classic books? just curious.

A 'novella' is generally a book shorter than a novel but longer than a short story. It's generally categorised as between 17,500 to 40,000 words. (eg. 70 to 160 manuscript pages).

Notable examples of novellas: Animal Farm, Breakfast at Tiffany's, A Christmas Carol, The Old Man and the Sea, The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde.

Personally, I'd say anything under 200 pages. I think 'short story' and 'novella' are interchangeable when it comes to Goodreads.

Remember you guys, if your book you nominate for the group reads does not win, you can always ask others in the group to buddy read it with you. :)
