I am open to other suggestions, but thought this would be an interesting book to start with. Viktor Frankl lived in a concentration camp during the Nazi's regime... The first half of the book describes his story, the second half of the book looks at Frankl's theory called "logotherapy." Yes, its true, this sounds horribly boring, logo what?... Its his philosophy stating that "finding meaning" is the very core of our existence. Those who had something to live for, or to look forward to in the future were able to survive the concentration suffering, while those who could not find such hope often died. I think some of Frankl's theories can translate well into our modern day world that is filled with suffering, poverty, and at time s a since of hopelessness. This book can be an effective tool especially for those who find themselves working in the inner city, or among folks who are on the margins of our society.

John | 1 comments This is a very interesting read. I read it last summer. Not exactly a beach read, but something that everyone should explore a bit. Considering how everyone gets so caught up in the little things that may be 'annoying' from day to day, this book really makes you take a step back and think. Also, it is interesting to think about your happiness 'set-point'. We hear about people who win the lottery or lose a limb, but basically return to their 'set-point' of happiness after a few months or year. It just goes to show that happiness is affected by your situtation and surroundings, but those who have an underlying joy in their life can weather the good times and bad on a whole different level.
