Shields begins this section by getting right to the point -- what did Jane face at the age of 20 (young for us now, but not so young then)? She uses the phrase that Jane may have been "spooked" by the thought of being unmarried and disadvantaged (financially) through life. Jane as a frightened human being is not something that stays in my mind very often. A reminder of that is not a bad thing, for me to keep her life in perspective.
