I got the idea for this from another book club I'm in, so we can talk about non-book related stuff here. Let me know what you think.

DJ (djdivaofjava) This might be the place to discuss that Rumball Brownie you were talking about?

Maybe the place to discuss the after effects....

DJ (djdivaofjava) So true...Oh Wise one!

message 5: by Joy (new)

Joy I am really getting annoyed with all these vote-for-my-candidate messages that are collecting on my voicemail! I could also do without all the signs everywhere. Good thing tomorrow is Election Day!

I hear you! I voted by mail back in September and I just want to scream! I got one this morning at 9:30! There should be an opt out, like the do not call list, for political garbage. I think there should be a ban on direct mailings and information stuck in you door too. All those trees have to die for nothing....

Joy Here is another complaint. Must they start advertising for Christmas this early?! I know it happens this way every year but it really turns me off. Thanks for listening!

message 8: by DJ (new)

DJ (djdivaofjava) I agree about Campaign leaflets entirely. They are unsolicited drivel and unwanted!

Regarding Christmas I actually regard myself as lucky that I didn't hear a Christmas tune until yesterday!

Joy, you have hit my hot button on that one! I am so FURIOUS with retailers who insist on putting up "C" crap BEFORE Hallloween! The Hallmark store I buy all my cards from had ornaments up as early as August! I remember when I was a kid, that "C" stuff didn't even go up in stores until after the Macy's parade was over. Now, it's up almost 24/7! Employees get just as sick of it as customers do. Retailers want to know why sales are sluggish!

I am now avoiding any and all retailers who have up "C" crap until after Nov. 27, and I am not shy about telling them why either. I will not buy anything for "C" until after Dec. 1. That is my rule.

One of the local radio stations will go all "holliday music",on air mind you, soon, and will play it until Dec. 26. One will do it on-line until after Thanksgiving. Again, no music until after Dec. 1, and sometimes not even then.

I don't know, maybe I'm just old, but am really beginning to hate "C" in general. It could be that the lack of work or just the retail market insistance on cramming it down our throats, but I am just getting appathetic about it. Anyone else feel the same?

Joy I agree with you Kim and thanks for calling it as you see it. I think Xmas is way too commercialized. It's run by a big Eastern syndicate you know (thanks Lucy from Charlie Brown!)

Ahh, Shultz. No matter how jadded I become, I still watch that every year. I think it reminds me of how simple "C" can be... every year it's the same thing. I'm a sheppard...(sorry, fave line)

I got a rock.

As a retail drone, I've learned to despise "C" with a fury I'd seldom known before. At my store they had us put up all the "C" junk the day after Halloween. What's that? Thanksgiving, you ask? Oh, it has one tiny endcap of kids books. It's like the company just wants to skip that holiday completely. Grrr.

Joy I saw a really good movie last night called The Notorious Bettie Page. Bettie was a legendary pin-up queen in the 50's and Gretchen Mol plays her brilliantly. Check it out if you're looking for something different.

Yeah, I saw that not too long ago. It really was quite good. I even learned some new things about her.

And yes, Doubt is very good. Everyone comes away from it with a different impression, and no one is wrong.

DJ (djdivaofjava) Bright Star is lovely if you like period Drama...

Joy I watched the 1st season of Ally McBeal on DVD last week. I used to love that show and enjoyed seeing it again. Were any of you fans? The DVD set had no special features though :( Oh well, bygones....

I tried that show when it started, but I could never get into it. I guess I wasn't the right demographic for it.

He's a public figure who SURPRISE! can't keep his pants zipped! If any of us did this, no one would care except those of us who are affected directly. I say leave the 2 of them to figure out what they want to do, and live with the consequences. I hope she gets what she deserves, provided that she is innocent in all of this....

Joy I finally saw Slumdog Millionaire last night. I liked it but it wasn't as good as I expected it to be given that it was Best Picture at the Oscars. Has anyone else seen it?

I have found when I watch movies that won all sorts of awards, that I normally don't like them and/or understand them. Exceptions to this are rare, i.e. "Driving Miss Daisy" and "The Queen". Does anyone else have that problem, or do you seek out award winners?

Joy Hi, I'm having minor surgery on my foot this afternoon. Keep a good thought for me! Thanks.

message 25: by Joy (new)

Joy Thanks Kim, the surgery went fine. It should take about 3 to 4 weeks to recover.

message 26: by Paul (new)

Paul (merman1967) | 113 comments Hello. No apologies for this, it is an editorial I am submitting to one of the local news station.

My name is Reverend Paul Patterson. I take great offense at the treatment of the LGBT community as second class citizens. The recent Supreme Court decision is a great triumph for a section of law abiding, tax-paying United States citizens that are heavily discriminated against. Sadly, it has caused a great deal of pot-banging, yet again declaring the need to "protect the sanctity of marriage".

First, marriage IS NOT a religious institution. As a fully ordained minister, I had to prove my ordination to the State of Ohio in order to receive permission to solemnize wedding vows. A couple that comes to me to get married must FIRST get a license (legal permission issued by the State of Ohio). Once they have that license, they can CHOOSE to have their wedding solemnized by a minister, by a judge, by a Mayor, or by a Justice of the Peace. Conversely, that judge, Mayor, or Justice of the Peace requires NO permission from any church or minister. Additionally, the couple getting married requires nothing from the church for their marriage to be legal, encompassing all rights, privileges, protections and responsibilities granted by that LEGAL term.

Additionally, LEGAL recognition of gay marriages WILL NOT force ANY changes on ANY church or minister. No one minister will be required to perform a gay marriage, just as they are now not required to perform a straight wedding. We, as ministers, can refuse to solemnize any marriage for any reason, no questions asked.

People say that marriage is only between one man and one woman for procreation. Does this invalidate marriages of infertile couples? Does this invalidate the marriages of senior citizens that wed late in life? No, it does not because procreation is not a requirement for marriage.

Second, the cry goes out that we need to return to Biblical marriage. I ask what type of marriage do you refer to? The marriage of a man and two of his cousins, purchased from their father in exchange for 14 years of labor as Jacob did in Genesis 29? The marriage of a soldier and his female prisoner of war as in Numbers 3? The marriage that you arranged between two slaves as in Exodus 21? The marriage of a rapist and his victim as in Deuteronomy 22? How about a marriage between a king, 700 wives and 300 concubines as with King Solomon?

It is clear that marriage HAS changed through the years. It is clear that marriage was never restricted to one man and one woman in the Bible, except as recorded in 1 Timothy 3 and Titus 1 for holding an office of bishop, deacon or elder in the church.

The United States guarantees that we are free to worship as we see fit (provided we are not harming others). This is not restricted to Judeo Christian beliefs. It is fine to encompass and celebrate your beliefs, to follow the dogma of your sect/denomination. But you do not have the right to over-rule the religious beliefs of others in differing sects/denominations, let alone other religions. It is past time to recognize that fact. Keep your religion in your church, in your home, in your life, but out of politics.
