Greetings! With the success of last summer’s Secret Story event, where authors posted stories anonymously for a month, and then we announced who wrote what (so much fun!), we thought it would be fun to try another story challenge.
This time! It’s a round robin. What’s that? It’s when one author starts a story, and then passes it on to another author, and then that author passes it on, etc.
“What?” you might ask. “That sounds crazy. Do the authors talk to each other about where the story is going? Do they map things out together? Motivations? Conflicts? Who falls in love?”
No, they don’t. Part of the challenge is that you don’t have control over how things happened before, and where they go after you. BUT your part is still vital for continuing the story.
Round Robins, more than anything, is a story game. It’s supposed to be playful and fun, and not stressful. It’s more about the excitement of where a writer will take a story next. (And also it’s fun to see different writing styles continuing the same story.)
We’re asking for volunteers! Whether you’re a professional writer, or you just like to write as a hobby, we’d love to have you join the game.
Round Robin Length: We’ll plan this round of the round robin to be 10 parts, with each author assigned a part, and each part being the length of one GoodReads post, so 12,000 characters (including spaces), which is around 2,200 words, give or take a space.
Length can vary: Sections don’t need to be 2,200 words. They can be shorter. They just can’t be longer. It’s all about what fits best for you and your story part (within that max limit.)
When will the Round Robin start? It will start on January 5, 2014.
How to post your story part? Each author will post their portion in a new thread in the Round Robin folder.
(This way, people can comment on the chapter/portion.) To keep things consistent, we’ll ask authors to title the thread “GRNW Round Robin part X (1, 2, 3, etc) by Author Name.
How long will I have to do my part? You will have two weeks to complete your part of the round robin.
We have a set release schedule, which is easier for writers who want to plan their schedule out more.
People can post prior to their assigned due date, but the next person in line still has their same later due date. (So, if you post earlier, prior to your due date, the next person has extra time added to their two weeks.) It’s not necessary to do that. It’s up to each writer and what fits best with them.
Please let us know if something has come up and you don’t think you can make your due date.
What about story topics? As voted by group members, the Round Robin prompt is Library Pirates!
