Holli I saw this on a fellow Chicks blog and it looked fun, like something we could do here on CoL :

1. Are you careful with the spines? Or do you crack your books open to make them lay flat?

2. Do you use bookmarks? Or do you dog-ear the corners? If you do use bookmarks, do you use those fashionable metal ones? Or paper?

3. Do you write in your books? Ever? If you do, do you make small marks, or write in as much blank space as you can find? Pen or pencil? Highlighter? Your name on the front page?

4. Do you toss your books on the floor? Into book bags? Or do you treat them tenderly, with respect?

5. Do you ever lay your book face-down, to save your place?

6. Do you bathe with your books? Hold them with wet hands? Read out in the rain? Anything of that sort?

7. Are your books lined up on a bookshelf? Or crammed in any which way? Stacked on the floor?

8. Do you make a distinction--in regards to book care--between hardcovers and paperbacks?

9. Naturally, you love all of your books, but how, exactly? Are your books loved in the battered way of a well-loved teddy bear, or like a cherished photo album or item of clothing that's used, appreciated, but carefully cared for?

Would love to see your answers!

Jamie (The Perpetual Page-Turner) (perpetualpageturner) | 369 comments 1. Are you careful with the spines? Or do you crack your books open to make them lay flat? I can't say I'm careful..but I'm not horrible. I try not to abuse them!

2. Do you use bookmarks? Or do you dog-ear the corners? If you do use bookmarks, do you use those fashionable metal ones? Or paper? I tend to dog ear them because I always end up dropping my bookmark somewhere. Or I put in anything I can find.

3. Do you write in your books? Ever? If you do, do you make small marks, or write in as much blank space as you can find? Pen or pencil? Highlighter? Your name on the front page? I normally don't write in my books.

4. Do you toss your books on the floor? Into book bags? Or do you treat them tenderly, with respect? Oh they are always being thrown into my purse and wherever else.

5. Do you ever lay your book face-down, to save your place? yep all the time.

6. Do you bathe with your books? Hold them with wet hands? Read out in the rain? Anything of that sort? I sometimes bathe with them..but I'm super careful not to get them wet.

7. Are your books lined up on a bookshelf? Or crammed in any which way? Stacked on the floor? A mixture of all of the above..I have them lined up on a bookshelf..and on top of those books..and in a box..and piled on the floor. Hmm..kinda like my clothes..ahh too many books and clothes!

8. Do you make a distinction--in regards to book care--between hardcovers and paperbacks? I prefer paperback..but I won't discriminate.

9. Naturally, you love all of your books, but how, exactly? Are your books loved in the battered way of a well-loved teddy bear, or like a cherished photo album or item of clothing that's used, appreciated, but carefully cared for? Pretty well cared for. Some are loved in a battered way but probably because I got them like that.

Christy (TheReaderBee) (thereaderbee) | 192 comments Ohh, what fun!

1. I try not to crack them too much, but I do somewhat, especially if I have to fight to keep them open!

2. I use bookmarks. I LOVE BOOKMARKS! Not the metal kind though, I'm a paper bookmark girl. I by heavy cardstock and make my own. lol I used to use scrap paper though, whatever scrap was available.

3. I never, ever write in my books!

4. I don't throw them on the floor on purpose, but most of the time my kids do. I bought a purse (messenger bag type) with a huge side pocket, and my books usually go in there.

5. If I don't have a bookmark handy, I do place my books face down. They usually aren't face down when I get back though! lol

6. I don't bathe with books, and if I'm reading in the rain, I'm usually under the canopy or porch. I don't like getting books wet.

7. Right now my books are lined up and I have a few stacks also. A few are stacked on the floor too.

8. I usually prefer paperbacks.

9. I try to take care of my books. Some ar really well read, but that just makes them even better!

message 4: by Joy (last edited Jun 21, 2009 09:47AM) (new)

Joy (joy85) | 94 comments 1. I like to have my books lay flat if I'm reading them on a table or something.

2. I use bookmarks, and yes I do have a few metal ones with the fun sayings on it: my favorite says "A present is a present you can open over and over again." I hate folding corners of a book!

3. I never write in my books! If I want to tag something, or write something, Post-Its! When I had textbooks for college, that was a different story, but I never wrote in novel-books.

4. I'm running out of room on my bookshelf, so I hate to say it, but I do have books on my floor! I don't "toss" them though, I try to pile them nicely. I do toss them on the bed once in a while, and I'm always carrying a book around with my in my purse, which is how it gets beat up a little bit.

5. Yes; if I'm only leaving for a minute or two, I'll lay my book face-down.

6. I used to love the idea of taking a bath while reading, but I found out how fundamentally hard that is.

7. They're all lined up by author and genre. However, like I said, I'm running out, so now they've started a collection on my floor. I'm a lot like Jamie on this one!

8. I treat both nicely, but I think I'm slightly more careful with paperbacks than I am with hardcovers, since they can't handle as much "abuse". However, when I read, I sometimes curl paperbacks around.

9. I try to keep my books as neat as possible, but I think they're actually more of the former, just because I carry them around in my purse and they start to get beat up a little. I wish they were nicer, since I'm so OCD in that sense, but I think I've given up that I can do that.

Shelby *trains flying monkeys* 1. I do lie them flat. I do try and be careful with them.

2. I like paper bookmarks the best. I love the things. Right now I'm using one I got from our swap.

3. I don't write in my books. Now I do however write in my books for school..textbooks. I make notes in them and highlight. I keep them so that I have them later. So no one ever really sees them but me.

4.I have tossed some on the floor before but not badly.

5. Yes constantly!

6. I hate when they get wet so nope.

7. I have a bit of OCD with my books. They are all pretty much shelved. By alphabetical order. That way I don't buy the same book again. :P

8. Nah

9. Mine are well loved and used.

message 6: by Ally (new)

Ally (goodreadscomuser_allhug) 1. I'm a spine cracker I'm afraid.

2. I tend to dog-ear the corners too!

3. It depends - I write all over the books I'm studying - mostly in biro. I never use highlighters though but I do underline key passages in multi-colours. Books I'm not studying get away without a mark.

4. My books get tossed all over, I carry one or two with me wherever I go in a book bag - I hate to be caught anywhere without a good book to read.

5. If I'm reading in bed I'll lay the books face down to save my place.

6. I love to read in the bath with a glass of wine and maybe some chocolate too if i'm lucky. I try not to drop them in but I do turn the pages with my wet hands.

7. Crammed onto my bookshelves any-which-way. I also have book pile coffee tables all over the house.

8. Hardcovers tend to get a little bit better treatment as you tend to pay so much more for them. I don't dog ear the pages of those - I use the Jacket sleeves to hold my place instead.

9. Definitely loved in the battered way of a well-loved teddy bear. I like a well-thumbed book - shows they've been read and re-read and loved. Although I prefer to buy mine new and batter them myself!

Ally

There was a bookmark swap?? And I missed it? WAHHH!
;)

I love paper bookmarks too, aren't they the best?

message 8: by SarahSaysRead (new)

SarahSaysRead 1. Are you careful with the spines? Or do you crack your books open to make them lay flat?
I'm usually not overly careful of a spine. For my favorite books, I usually own mass market copies to read, and hardcovers to keep.

2. Do you use bookmarks? Or do you dog-ear the corners? If you do use bookmarks, do you use those fashionable metal ones? Or paper?
Sometimes I just use a scrap of paper, or a receipt. I also make beaded bookmarks, and I usually use those for trades or hardcovers.

3. Do you write in your books? Ever? If you do, do you make small marks, or write in as much blank space as you can find? Pen or pencil? Highlighter? Your name on the front page?
If I own multiple copies of a book, I might make marks or highlights.

4. Do you toss your books on the floor? Into book bags? Or do you treat them tenderly, with respect?
I don't throw my books around. The only semi-dangerous place they go is in my purse.

5. Do you ever lay your book face-down, to save your place?
Sure.

6. Do you bathe with your books? Hold them with wet hands? Read out in the rain? Anything of that sort?
I read in the tub - I'd do it every night if I could. But my hands are always dry, and I haven't dropped a book in the water yet.

7. Are your books lined up on a bookshelf? Or crammed in any which way? Stacked on the floor?
They're mostly stacked horizontally on my bookshelves.

8. Do you make a distinction--in regards to book care--between hardcovers and paperbacks?
I'm more gentle with my hardcovers.

9. Naturally, you love all of your books, but how, exactly? Are your books loved in the battered way of a well-loved teddy bear, or like a cherished photo album or item of clothing that's used, appreciated, but carefully cared for?
Both. My faves all have the well-loved and worn look about them, due to the fact that I enjoy re-reading them. And extra copies are always kept in nicer condition. All my books are handled with care and are logged into an excel file so that I know exactly what I own. If I loan a book to someone, I write it down.

message 9: by Jennifer W (new)

Jennifer W | 2175 comments 1. Are you careful with the spines? Or do you crack your books open to make them lay flat? I try not to crack them, but sometimes you just have to.

2. Do you use bookmarks? Or do you dog-ear the corners? If you do use bookmarks, do you use those fashionable metal ones? Or paper? I have 1 nice metal bookmark ("Wisdom starts in Wonder") that my boyfriend gave to me, otherwise, I use the receipts that get printed when I check books out from the library. I will dog ear, in a pinch, but usually I can find something else to mark my page.

3. Do you write in your books? Ever? If you do, do you make small marks, or write in as much blank space as you can find? Pen or pencil? Highlighter? Your name on the front page? I wrote in my textbooks, very rarely I might underline a passage in a novel, but if I do it's in pencil.

4. Do you toss your books on the floor? Into book bags? Or do you treat them tenderly, with respect? My books are everywhere! I try not to "toss" them perse, but yes, floor, nightstand, canvas bag, book shelves, coffee table....

5. Do you ever lay your book face-down, to save your place? Frequently.

6. Do you bathe with your books? Hold them with wet hands? Read out in the rain? Anything of that sort? I don't have a tub anymore :( but when I did, yes I'd read in it, but keep my hands dry. I'll read in the rain if I've got a covered porch to do so.

7. Are your books lined up on a bookshelf? Or crammed in any which way? Stacked on the floor? My books are mostly on shelves, but I have library books everywhere.

8. Do you make a distinction--in regards to book care--between hardcovers and paperbacks? Not really. I prefer paperbacks, but I love all my books equally. ;)

9. Naturally, you love all of your books, but how, exactly? Are your books loved in the battered way of a well-loved teddy bear, or like a cherished photo album or item of clothing that's used, appreciated, but carefully cared for? Somewhere in between, I think. I never intentionally abuse my stuff, but I don't always take the best care of it, either. Especially when it comes to storage.

Fun questions, Holli!

Cindy (cyndil62) | 1774 comments 1. Are you careful with the spines? Or do you crack your books open to make them lay flat? I am careful with the spines, but lay them flat on the table when I'm trying to eat and read!

2. Do you use bookmarks? Or do you dog-ear the corners? If you do use bookmarks, do you use those fashionable metal ones? Or paper? I never never dog ear corners, one of my pet peeves! I am still using the bookmarks from the swap! Love bookmarks!

3. Do you write in your books? Ever? If you do, do you make small marks, or write in as much blank space as you can find? Pen or pencil? Highlighter? Your name on the front page? I never write in books; well except college books I wrote in of course. Sometimes I will copy a quote from a book in my journal.

4. Do you toss your books on the floor? Into book bags? Or do you treat them tenderly, with respect? I don't toss my books on the floor, I stack them neatly! ha I have a book bag by my chair in the family room but usually that is running over and there is also a stack by my chair, on my nightstand, on the kitchen table, etc.

5. Do you ever lay your book face-down, to save your place? Nope

6. Do you bathe with your books? Hold them with wet hands? Read out in the rain? Anything of that sort? Once in a great while I will read in the tub but I have a towel handy to dry my hands before turning a page!

7. Are your books lined up on a bookshelf? Or crammed in any which way? Stacked on the floor? On my bookshelves, they are placed according to height and a couple shelves for to reads, shelf for biography's, self-help, cookbooks and craft/home improvement books. My bookshelves are overflowing so also have them in the office, by my bed, etc.

8. Do you make a distinction--in regards to book care--between hardcovers and paperbacks? Nope

9. Naturally, you love all of your books, but how, exactly? Are your books loved in the battered way of a well-loved teddy bear, or like a cherished photo album or item of clothing that's used, appreciated, but carefully cared for? I am careful with my books! When I get used books I wipe them off and dry them, try to get the stickers off, etc.

message 15: by Alisha Marie (last edited Jun 21, 2009 07:48PM) (new)

Alisha Marie (endlesswonderofreading) | 6 comments 1. Are you careful with the spines? Or do you crack your books open to make them lay flat?
I'm extremely careful with the spines on my paperback books because they tend to break easier.

2. Do you use bookmarks? Or do you dog-ear the corners? If you do use bookmarks, do you use those fashionable metal ones? Or paper?
I always use a metal fairy bookmark that quotes Socrates "Wisdom begins in wonder." I never dog-ear my books. My sister did that once to my Deathly Hallows hardcover and after I threatened to never lend her any of my books, she stopped.

3. Do you write in your books? Ever? If you do, do you make small marks, or write in as much blank space as you can find? Pen or pencil? Highlighter? Your name on the front page?
I don't write on my books. I do have a couple of used books that have the previous owners name on them.

4. Do you toss your books on the floor? Into book bags? Or do you treat them tenderly, with respect?
I always take a book with me to work, so it's usually in my tote bag, but I don't just fling it in there. I place it carefully and I make sure it's on top so it doesn't get smushed with all the numerous crap I have in it.

5. Do you ever lay your book face-down, to save your place?
Once or twice if I'm upstairs in my bedroom and the house phone is ringing downstairs and I hurry to get it before it stops ringing, then I'll lay it face-down.

6. Do you bathe with your books? Hold them with wet hands? Read out in the rain? Anything of that sort?
I don't read in the bath and I'm usually under a porch if I'm reading in the rain.

7. Are your books lined up on a bookshelf? Or crammed in any which way? Stacked on the floor?
Most of my books are on a bookshelf downstairs, but my library books are always in my reusable B&N bag, my Harry Potter books are in my room stacked neatly on the bottom shelf of my computer desk; my recent buys are in the cabinet underneath my computer desk; my recent-recent buys are on the top of my wardrobe next to my stereo; and my recent-recent-recent buys are stacked on top of the CPU.

8. Do you make a distinction--in regards to book care--between hardcovers and paperbacks?
I tend to care for my paperbacks more carefully since they get ruined far more easily than the hardcovers.

9. Naturally, you love all of your books, but how, exactly? Are your books loved in the battered way of a well-loved teddy bear, or like a cherished photo album or item of clothing that's used, appreciated, but carefully cared for?
A bit of both actually. I have a lot of used books that I get from paperbackswap, library sales, charity shops, and ebay, and although most of them are in semi-new condition, there are a handful that are a bit more "loved" than the others. As long as they're not falling apart, then I don't care if a book doesn't look as new as the others.

5.Nope.

6. Nope. As in NO!

7.In my bookshelf.

8.I use cardboard paper when covering the books to store their neatness. I don't want the cover or back cover to be ruined because it is a paperback.

9. I take care of them more than I do with my stuff toys.

message 19: by Holli (new)

Holli 1. I crack the spines if a book is really stiff but I won't crack it all the way. I don't like when they are floppy, just bendy.

2. I use bookmarks (paper not metal) and I also dog ear the pages if I can't find my bookmark.

3. I write my name on the inside cover of books I want to keep but I won't write anywhere else. I do highlight though..usually with yellow.

4. I throw my books around.

5. I will most certainly lay my book face down if I can't find my bookmark.

6. I don't read in the rain, that's kinda strange. I'd prefer to be under some kind of cover in the rain. i do like to read in the bath tub though and have been known to accidentally get water spots on the books.

7. The books I love are on the bookshelves lined up in an orderly height fashion. the ones I haven't read yet are stacked on the closet floor....

8. I do treat hardcovers better than paperback books.

9. The books I love are treated with careful respect.

Andrea | 49 comments 1. Are you careful with the spines? Or do you crack your books open to make them lay flat?

Sometimes I do Crack them.

2. Do you use bookmarks? Or do you dog-ear the corners? If you do use bookmarks, do you use those fashionable metal ones? Or paper?

Never ever dog-ear, love bookmarks both paper and metal or whatever! P.S giving away paper bookmarks on my website if you would like a couple.

3. Do you write in your books? Ever? If you do, do you make small marks, or write in as much blank space as you can find? Pen or pencil? Highlighter? Your name on the front page?

No, feels to much like homework! Love to just relax and enjoy.

4. Do you toss your books on the floor? Into book bags? Or do you treat them tenderly, with respect?

Always treat them with respect but they are well traveled. Wherever I go the books go! beach, car, work, etc. etc.

5. Do you ever lay your book face-down, to save your place?

sometimes.

6. Do you bathe with your books? Hold them with wet hands? Read out in the rain? Anything of that sort?

Sometimes take a bath but turn the pages with a dry hands. I don't like how the book doesn't lay flat after it gets wet.

7. Are your books lined up on a bookshelf? Or crammed in any which way? Stacked on the floor?

Books I want to keep are stacked neatly on a bookshelf. Books I want to share seem to be in several different locations which could take awhile to locate.

8. Do you make a distinction--in regards to book care--between hardcovers and paperbacks?

I find it much easier to take good care of a hardcover. Paperbacks get tossed more.

9. Naturally, you love all of your books, but how, exactly? Are your books loved in the battered way of a well-loved teddy bear, or like a cherished photo album or item of clothing that's used, appreciated, but carefully cared for?

My coffee table books are very well cared for in a photo album kind of way. My reading books are loved like a teddy bear.

message 26: by Jessica (new)

Jessica (jess0702) | 24 comments 1. Are you careful with the spines? Or do you crack your books open to make them lay flat?

I try to be careful, but sometimes I end up cracking the spine.

2. Do you use bookmarks? Or do you dog-ear the corners? If you do use bookmarks, do you use those fashionable metal ones? Or paper?

Paper bookmarks- I lose the metal ones too easily.

3. Do you write in your books? Ever? If you do, do you make small marks, or write in as much blank space as you can find? Pen or pencil? Highlighter? Your name on the front page?

I usually put my name in them, but every once in awhile I will write in them-usually only in books I am reading for a class or taking notes on for some reason. I only write in pen.

4. Do you toss your books on the floor? Into book bags? Or do you treat them tenderly, with respect?

Mine go everywhere with me, but I try to make sure they don't get too bent or wrinkled in my bag. Otherwise, I try to make sure they make it onto a table or bookshelf of some sort at home.

5. Do you ever lay your book face-down, to save your place?

Yes, even though I got yelled at by the librarian at school in first grade for doing that :)

6. Do you bathe with your books? Hold them with wet hands? Read out in the rain? Anything of that sort?

No. I hate when the paper gets wet and wrinkles and makes a bump in the pages.

7. Are your books lined up on a bookshelf? Or crammed in any which way? Stacked on the floor?

Kind of lined up? Depends on if I've had time to organize my room lately.

8. Do you make a distinction--in regards to book care--between hardcovers and paperbacks?

Paperbacks tend to be harder to take care of, but I always take the jacket off hardcovers that are going places with me. I hate when they get ripped.

9. Naturally, you love all of your books, but how, exactly? Are your books loved in the battered way of a well-loved teddy bear, or like a cherished photo album or item of clothing that's used, appreciated, but carefully cared for?

I have books that fall into both categories. For books that I really really love (for example, I have read the Lord of the Rings trilogy about 7 times...) I have a "nice" copy and my copy that I would take with me to read out and about.

message 27: by Lori (new)

Lori Walker 1. Are you careful with the spines? Or do you crack your books open to make them lay flat?

I try to be careful, but those mass market editions that are 700 pages long get cracked spines merely because of gravity. I am trying to buy non mass market editions to help prevent this.

2. Do you use bookmarks? Or do you dog-ear the corners? If you do use bookmarks, do you use those fashionable metal ones? Or paper?

I have one metal bookmark and it falls out easily. Luckily I use it in a book that doesn't travel with me. I usually use any old scrap of paper. And I'll dogear the corners if I don't have anything else to use or if I want to mark a certain passage.

3. Do you write in your books? Ever? If you do, do you make small marks, or write in as much blank space as you can find? Pen or pencil? Highlighter? Your name on the front page?

I don't usually put my name in them. Although, that's a thought. I mark up textbooks like there's no tomorrow--highlighting, underlining, writing notes in the margins. I usually just underline or bracket my personal reading books in either pen or pencil. But it's not every book. And it has to be a really awesome passage.

4. Do you toss your books on the floor? Into book bags? Or do you treat them tenderly, with respect?

I try to take care of them, but sometimes that's just not possible since I always have a book with me. And I do make piles on the floor, but only because I have no more shelf space and I don't step on them.

5. Do you ever lay your book face-down, to save your place?

If it's to run to the kitchen and grab something or to do something that won't take long, I'll do it. If I know it's going to be a while, I put in the bookmark.

6. Do you bathe with your books? Hold them with wet hands? Read out in the rain? Anything of that sort?

I'll take them in the bathtub. I have one of those things that goes across the tub and has a book holder so my book doesn't get wet. Although I accidentally dropped a brand new copy of Pride and Prejudice in the tub. I was a bit miffed.

7. Are your books lined up on a bookshelf? Or crammed in any which way? Stacked on the floor?

They're on shelves as best as they can fit, which is vertically. I have a couple of stacks on the floor. I have too many books and/or not enough time to organize them.

8. Do you make a distinction--in regards to book care--between hardcovers and paperbacks?

I take the jackets off of hardcovers and I try to avoid buying them because they're more expensive and less...friendly. Hardcover books just seem more serious and I was to be friends with my books, go on adventures with them.

9. Naturally, you love all of your books, but how, exactly? Are your books loved in the battered way of a well-loved teddy bear, or like a cherished photo album or item of clothing that's used, appreciated, but carefully cared for?

I think it's a little bit of both. I have books that I've read a million times that are battered, but well-loved. And I also have nice copies that sit and look pretty.

1. Are you careful with the spines? Or do you crack your books open to make them lay flat?
I absolutely crack them open. I like my books easy to grab and easy to read.

2. Do you use bookmarks? Or do you dog-ear the corners? If you do use bookmarks, do you use those fashionable metal ones? Or paper?
I typically do-ear the pages, unless I am borrowing a book from a friend. Then I use a bookmark... and those are typically scraps of paper.

3. Do you write in your books? Ever? If you do, do you make small marks, or write in as much blank space as you can find? Pen or pencil? Highlighter? Your name on the front page?
I LOVE writing in my books, if I take the time to stop reading and want to record my thoughts. I have no favorite writing utensil to use.
And I always put my name on the front page. If I love a book I pass it on to someone. If they give it back, then I pass it again. Otherwise, I ask people to write their names in it also and pass it on again to someone else.

4. Do you toss your books on the floor? Into book bags? Or do you treat them tenderly, with respect?
If they are my books, I am not so tender with them. I feel like they are friends that are casual and well loved, but not always pampered. :)

5. Do you ever lay your book face-down, to save your place?
ALWAYS! I have 5 kids and don't have a lot of reading time. I need to be able to grab and drop quickly.

6. Do you bathe with your books? Hold them with wet hands? Read out in the rain? Anything of that sort?
I love bathing with a book, but I try to be careful and not get it wet. I never read in the rain. Ugh. I hate sitting in the rain.

7. Are your books lined up on a bookshelf? Or crammed in any which way? Stacked on the floor?
Bookshelf? What are those? We only have toy shelves, food shelves, and clothes shelves at our house.

8. Do you make a distinction--in regards to book care--between hardcovers and paperbacks?
Nope.

9. Naturally, you love all of your books, but how, exactly? Are your books loved in the battered way of a well-loved teddy bear, or like a cherished photo album or item of clothing that's used, appreciated, but carefully cared for?
Again, 5 kids.... all under 9 years old. Nothing in our house is not well-loved. If I want it to stay nice I have to pack it in a box and hide it in the garage.

Katie (katieisallbooked) | 319 comments 1. Are you careful with the spines? Or do you crack your books open to make them lay flat?

I don't intentionally try to crack the spines, but I'm excessively careful about avoiding it. I just open it as far as is necessary to hold the book comfortably.

2. Do you use bookmarks? Or do you dog-ear the corners? If you do use bookmarks, do you use those fashionable metal ones? Or paper?

I use bookmarks. I prefer paper to metal. The metal ones seem to slip out of the books more easily.

3. Do you write in your books? Ever? If you do, do you make small marks, or write in as much blank space as you can find? Pen or pencil? Highlighter? Your name on the front page?

I typically only write in non-fiction or reference type books that I plan to keep forever for myself. I prefer pencil and sometimes highlight.

4. Do you toss your books on the floor? Into book bags? Or do you treat them tenderly, with respect?

I try to be as gentle as possible. I almost always have a book in my purse which is sometimes a tight squeeze. Books do end up on the floor by my bed or the sofa if I fall asleep.

5. Do you ever lay your book face-down, to save your place? Yes. Usually if I'm in a hurry.

6. Do you bathe with your books? Hold them with wet hands? Read out in the rain? Anything of that sort?

I do bathe with my books, but am very careful to avoid getting them wet. I don't read with wet hands or in the rain.

7. Are your books lined up on a bookshelf? Or crammed in any which way? Stacked on the floor? Lined up on several bookshelves with a few stacked neatly in milk crates.

8. Do you make a distinction--in regards to book care--between hardcovers and paperbacks? No.

9. Naturally, you love all of your books, but how, exactly? Are your books loved in the battered way of a well-loved teddy bear, or like a cherished photo album or item of clothing that's used, appreciated, but carefully cared for? I care for my books as best I can and most of them are in very good condition. There are a select few that show how much they've been loved throughout the years.

2. Dog-ear? Sacrilege! I use all sorts of bookmarks, from scraps of paper to fancy ones with tassels and beads. I have a few metal ones, but I don't really like them.

3. I don't make a habit of writing in my books, but from time to time I like to mark important passages to refer to later.

4. I toss them all over, I must admit.

5. And yes, if I don't have a bookmark at hand, I will lay a book face-down.

6. I always read in the bath, but I try very hard to keep my hands dry, especially if it's a library book.

7. "Are your books lined up on a bookshelf? Or crammed in any which way? Stacked on the floor?" Yes. All of those.

8. I prefer the feel of a hardback in my hands, but I like the price difference of paperbacks. If I am buying a series of books, I prefer to keep them all in the same format, so if I bought the first book in paperback, I'll wait until the next one comes out in paperback, too.

9. I do my best to keep my books in good condition, with dustjackets intact, but I will admit that some of them are very dusty!

Lori Walker I wouldn't call it disrespect. I mean, what's the point of owning books if they're not going to be read and appreciated by someone, even if that means that you, the original owner, had to pass it on to someone else? Some people devour books differently. There are some books that I just read the tar out of.

I try to be careful, but sometimes I accidentally do crack them.

I collect bookmarks, I love them. I have all kinds! Paper, metal, magnetic, homemade!

3. Do you write in your books? Ever? If you do, do you make small marks, or write in as much blank space as you can find? Pen or pencil? Highlighter? Your name on the front page?
I only write if they are reference or classics, & I need to make notes.

4. Do you toss your books on the floor? Into book bags? Or do you treat them tenderly, with respect?
I have them stacked on the floor, in the bookcase. I don't throw them, and they are neat though.

I have, but I only do it for a minute or 2. I don't leave them like that.

6. Do you bathe with your books? Hold them with wet hands? Read out in the rain? Anything of that sort?
Not anymore. I had an accident with 1 in a bathtub.

7. Are your books lined up on a bookshelf? Or crammed in any which way? Stacked on the floor?
Lined up, but every which way. They are neatly messy.

8. Do you make a distinction--in regards to book care--between hardcovers and paperbacks?
No.

Some are battered and dog-eared, but only the well loved. The others are cherished and appreciated, but neat and tidy.

Lianne (eclecticreading) | 365 comments 1. Are you careful with the spines? Or do you crack your books open to make them lay flat?
I am extremely careful with the spines of my books. I think the only exception are the books I use for my courses because I highlight and make notes and stuff. But I cringe whenever someone bends the spines of my books xD

2. Do you use bookmarks? Or do you dog-ear the corners? If you do use bookmarks, do you use those fashionable metal ones? Or paper?
I use bookmarks. I don't know where my metal one (it was a gift from friends back in high school) went at the moment, but I use the ones that the bookstore give me. I don't mourn as much if I lose or misplace them.

3. Do you write in your books? Ever? If you do, do you make small marks, or write in as much blank space as you can find? Pen or pencil? Highlighter? Your name on the front page?
I only write in my course books because I don't have the time anymore to write notes on a separate piece of paper. I usually write on the margins near the points I want to remember (which I also highlight) in pen or pencil, depending on what I have on hand at the time.

4. Do you toss your books on the floor? Into book bags? Or do you treat them tenderly, with respect?
Very rarely to I do that, and if I do, that's usually the hardcover books I borrowed from the library to get my research from, lol (I borrow 12 at a time---it can be heavy xD).

5. Do you ever lay your book face-down, to save your place?
Only the course books at certain times; otherwise I use bookmarks and the post-its that serve as page markers.

6. Do you bathe with your books? Hold them with wet hands? Read out in the rain? Anything of that sort?
Nope, I always dry my hands before I pick up my books.

7. Are your books lined up on a bookshelf? Or crammed in any which way? Stacked on the floor?
At the moment they're both lined up and crammed into every free space on my bookcase; I'm running out of room! =\

8. Do you make a distinction--in regards to book care--between hardcovers and paperbacks?
A bit, if only because the hardcovers have those sleeves that can be pretty annoying at times. But I usually buy paperback, so I guess there's not that much difference.

9. Naturally, you love all of your books, but how, exactly? Are your books loved in the battered way of a well-loved teddy bear, or like a cherished photo album or item of clothing that's used, appreciated, but carefully cared for?
Both, I suppose, but these days they resemble more of the latter than the former, lol.

LinBee Yeah, I managed to not only drop a book in the tub, it was a library book! That was bad.

And Teri, I don't take the dust covers off unless they bother me, but I try to keep them looking good. Most of the time I just tape them on to the book, that usually works.

message 42: by Melissa (new)

Melissa (lissieb7) | 544 comments 1. I am always careful about the spines of my books. I learned this from my mom. She's a teacher and she would take us with her in the summer to get her classroom ready. One of the chores she assigned to my sister and me was opening new textbooks so that the spines wouldn't get broken. I remember doing this so fondly.

2. I use bookmarks! I cannot stand the thought of turning down the corner. It's like harming the book. I mostly use paper bookmarks that have been laminated.

3. I have made notes in my Bible and occasionally highlighted in a textbook for school. I have not and will not write any of my books chosen for sheer pleasure.

4. I do my best to care for all of my books. That said I have more books than room in the bookshelves, so I have a few piles on the table and ottoman. I carry a book in my purse and in a bookbag when on a trip.

5. I have laid a book facedown when my bookmark has gone missing, but only until I find it or something else with which to mark my page. Never for any great length of time.

6. Only recently have I taken a book with me in the bathroom. I wanted to soak for awhile in a bubble bath. I laid in tub reading for awhile. I set the book down to bathe and once my hands are wet will not pick it up again unless I dry them thoroughly first. I liked the idea of relaxing with a book while I soaked, but did everything in my power to ensure the safety of the book.

7. Those books that are in the shelves are for the most part lined up nice and neat.

8. No. All of my books are precious works of art and I do my best to give them all the same care. I do, however, prefer hardbacks and keep a lookout for these on the sale table.

9. I take care of all my books. They are cherished, appreciated, loved, used, and carefully cared for.

Marsha (earthmarsha) | 1586 comments Teri, I am with your husband on the dust cover issue. On the one hand, yes, it defies logic because it's technically meant to protect the book, but on the other hand, when you put it back on the book and onto a shelf, it looks fresh and new. In my mind, dust covers are more fragile than the books themselves!

LinBee, I have also dropped a library book (or two) in the bathtub, which was embarrassing. But not as embarrassing as when my puppy chewed up a library book on how to train your dog!

message 44: by Peanut (new)

Peanut | 149 comments 1. Are you careful with the spines? Or do you crack your books open to make them lay flat?

-I'm a cracker. I always feel like I won the book lottery when I find books without cracked spine at a thrift store.

2. Do you use bookmarks? Or do you dog-ear the corners? If you do use bookmarks, do you use those fashionable metal ones? Or paper?

-Bookmarks: whatever paper I find handy. I used to dog-ear but I hated it when my page un dog-ears itself
so I stopped it.

3. Do you write in your books? Ever? If you do, do you make small marks, or write in as much blank space as you can find? Pen or pencil? Highlighter? Your name on the front page?

-NEVER NEVER NEVER only because I'm reading for fun. Not for discussion/school/bookclub, etc.

4. Do you toss your books on the floor? Into book bags? Or do you treat them tenderly, with respect?

-Not much of a tosser. I can't say I respect them because I've been known to use them as coasters for food and drinks. DOH!

5. Do you ever lay your book face-down, to save your place?

Rarely. I'm a bookmark gal to save page.

6. Do you bathe with your books? Hold them with wet hands? Read out in the rain? Anything of that sort?

-Nope

7. Are your books lined up on a bookshelf? Or crammed in any which way? Stacked on the floor?

Lined on shelf. Newly purchased ones that don't fit tend to be crammed in. Others stacked in baskets. All these books are to be read.

8. Do you make a distinction--in regards to book care--between hardcovers and paperbacks?

-Prefer paperbacks because they are lighter and also cheaper.

9. Naturally, you love all of your books, but how, exactly? Are your books loved in the battered way of a well-loved teddy bear, or like a cherished photo album or item of clothing that's used, appreciated, but carefully cared for?

I use them and then give them away! That shows my love for a good book if I pass it on. If it was a sucky book, it goes back to thrift store for someone else to buy. A very VERY good book stays with me (not many make get that honor).

I don't have the plastic shrink wrap on any of them, though. I heard that it can actually warp the records, although I don't know if it's true or not.

Brandie (brandiemichelle) Sorry...I've missed this! This looks fun. Thanks for posting this, Holli!

1. Are you careful with the spines? Or do you crack your books open to make them lay flat?

I don't really think about it, to be honest. I guess I just crack em open.

2. Do you use bookmarks? Or do you dog-ear the corners? If you do use bookmarks, do you use those fashionable metal ones? Or paper?

I have two bookmarks I use, both of the paper variety. And if I don't have a bookmark, I use a piece of torn paper or library receipt. I don't like to dog-ear the pages.

3. Do you write in your books? Ever? If you do, do you make small marks, or write in as much blank space as you can find? Pen or pencil? Highlighter? Your name on the front page?

I never write in my books. Should I? Maybe I should put my name in them all! That's what I'll do this week.

4. Do you toss your books on the floor? Into book bags? Or do you treat them tenderly, with respect?

I try to be nice to them. I always carry one in my purse at all times. But I try to be careful with how I bend it, or be extra careful not to tear the cover. I NEVER toss a book. Isn't that like a crime? lol.

5. Do you ever lay your book face-down, to save your place?

Yes. I do this often.

6. Do you bathe with your books? Hold them with wet hands? Read out in the rain? Anything of that sort?

I only take showers - so no. I don't like the pages or covers to wrinkle, so I try not to get the book wet. And read in the rain? Who does that?!

7. Are your books lined up on a bookshelf? Or crammed in any which way? Stacked on the floor?

I have a bookshelf that is jam-packed. I also display stacks of books all over my house. Books are a wonderful decoration.

8. Do you make a distinction--in regards to book care--between hardcovers and paperbacks?

I try to take care of all of my books, no matter if they are hardback or paperback. Especially the ones I keep permanently. That's why I sometimes have a hard time lending my favorites to people.

9. Naturally, you love all of your books, but how, exactly? Are your books loved in the battered way of a well-loved teddy bear, or like a cherished photo album or item of clothing that's used, appreciated, but carefully cared for?

I'd say used, appreciated, but carefully cared for. I've not read any of my books so many times that they look worn. I do lend some of my books to people, so they get used - but they are always in good condition.

That was fun!

I'm careful with the spines, but gently bend them if I can't read the book without holding it open.

2. Do you use bookmarks? Or do you dog-ear the corners? If you do use bookmarks, do you use those fashionable metal ones? Or paper?
I use a bookmark, always, as it has my grandson's picture on it and says 'I love you'. Makes me smile.

3. Do you write in your books? Ever? If you do, do you make small marks, or write in as much blank space as you can find? Pen or pencil? Highlighter? Your name on the front page?
I only write on a book if it's a self-help type and I want to remember certain passages - and I plan to keep it.

4. Do you toss your books on the floor? Into book bags? Or do you treat them tenderly, with respect?
Love books, treat them with care.

5. Do you ever lay your book face-down, to save your place?
Only for a moment or two

6. Do you bathe with your books? Hold them with wet hands? Read out in the rain? Anything of that sort?
Never read in the tub (I dropped one once!), or rain, never with wet hands

7. Are your books lined up on a bookshelf? Or crammed in any which way? Stacked on the floor?
Most are on shelves, but am running out of shelf space - it's time for a library donation!

8. Do you make a distinction--in regards to book care--between hardcovers and paperbacks?
Nope! Careful with all of 'em.

9. Naturally, you love all of your books, but how, exactly? Are your books loved in the battered way of a well-loved teddy bear, or like a cherished photo album or item of clothing that's used, appreciated, but carefully cared for?
Cherished and cared for, as I donate to friends, family and libraries (except for the rereads) after reading.
