Right at the start my interest is piqued with the mention of an orange alert. I have some idea that it may be related to the Canadian Environment Service Fact-sheet that preceded the first chapter. The scene is set well and the descriptive nature of the writing grounds me in the moment. I can almost feel the plastic coat and the density of the poisonous air. I'm a fan of cleverly describing your character instead of just blurting out what they look like and I think the author does an excellent job describing Janus by the way he lives. for example "His own plastic cover-all, zipped up to his neck, pinched him at the waist. It had begun fitting him quite snugly, due to his sedentary lifestyle and the fact that exercise was not recommended for people over forty." This gives me a very clear picture. The description of the gauze filters makes me feel really sorry for the people in this world. it seems like so much work just to breathe. I like the level of detail. All and all this first chapter does a great job setting up the world Janus lives in and develops a healthy curiosity to continue reading. I stopped the chapter challenge as the focus changed to Yves Prescott but the link shows the first 3 chapters!
